This is not the UK or the British National Anthem. Its not even the English National Anthem, though its frequently used as such. England does not in fact have an official Anthem. Flower of Scotland is the Scottish, and Old Land of my Fathers is the Welsh. In Northern Ireland it depends on who you ask!

The monarchy is a relic from a pre-WW1 era, which encourages the belief that some people are better then others simply because of the family they are born into. The fact remains though that she does hold the highest office in the country simply because of accident of birth, or as many people would have us believe, "by divine right." All people should be able to attain the highest office in their country, regardless of who their parents are.

However you are true that it is not the position that holds all the power. However it is symbolic, and symbols mean a lot. A countries head of state should be able to represent all the people of a country as equals, they should NEVER refer to citizens as their "subjects." If you became a republic, you would most likely retain the same political sytem with no monarch.

In Australia it was the two houses of parliament that were at loggerheads. Only fresh elections could unblock things, and the sitting PM wouldn't order them.
