@TechnSport Maybe because when we ordered it, the gtx 460 didn't exist, and the 6gb of ram cost just too damn much, and the 1920x1080 display is shite for programming, because the font is just too small, and causes eye strain.

@zentifity 1. I ordered this laptop last year, when 720QM was available, when there was no i5 or i3 out yet, only i7 :)

2. The GT240M does a very good job if you have all the drivers up to date, so whatever laptop you have, tell me.

@SKATEpoop312 for gaming go with the 620m, it has a higher clockrate but it's only a dual core, but for gaming the vast majority of games only use two cores any and it wont drain your battery like a mofucker.

Hi, i dont know much about laptops so i have a question:

- the i7 720qm has 1.6 ghz; but is that 1.6 ghz per core (so if it has 4 cores that means 6.4 ghz) or is only 1.6 ghz in total ??? 

- i heard that it can be overclocked to 2.8 GHz; is that overclock made automatically by the computer(for example in games), or i have to do it manually??

@5intax3rror it has 1.6GHz per core, so it's quite powerful :)It would be impossible to run Crysis on such high settings with a 1.6GHz processor and i doubt that alienware would ever use such a lame processor with only 1.6GHz for a gaming platform :)

@ponchikas no this isnt correct, its 1.6 GHz for the entire processor, the reason why it can run crysis is because quadcores support something called hyperthreading which gives it almost the same performance of a 2.2-2.6ghz single core, there are new processors out there that are single cores that run 3.3ghz up to 4ghz on turbo mode :O

@animepandah wrong. 1.6 per core. 4 cores total. turbo mode(shuts down 3 cores and runs 1 core only) is 2.8ghz.

@itiongo correction - 1.6 per core, 4 cores total - 8 logical processors , when turbo boost is on (Hyperthreading) it boosts cores up to 2.8, but shuts down two cores so that processor doesnt overheat, so 4 logical cores left, so total of 11.2 Ghz - this is less than the normal 12.8, only used because games do not support 8 logical processors, instead usually 2, or maybe 4 - so you get 2 or 4 times 2.8 with turbo boost.

@FDRW220 correct... but i believe the advertised 2.8 on the i7-720qm is when turbo boost activates only 1 core to 2.8ghz. for 2 cores with turbo boost it is 2.4ghz.

@LudiForis I think both edition of Crysis still used the same CryEngine 2.....mine is on GTX 260M and I was able to play WarHead on Very High settings at 1600x900 (Without Anti-Aliasing for better frame rates, I don't mine a little sharpy edges :P)

Wow, I have the same computer, and same parts, yet crysis runs like crap when I have the same settings as you, (1-2 fps.) I don't have stealth on either....Any advice on whats going on?

r u in stealth mode? u won't be able to hardcore GAME in stealth mode, that feature was designed for low power mobile web browsing...

SSDs load data about 3 times faster than a mechanical drive, they are much safer, and they will keep your battery charged longer.

I have this machine but with an 820qm i7 processor (3.06ghz), gtx 260m, 4gb 1333mhz and a 500gb 7200rpm hd. it cannot run crysis on gamer at 1920 x 1080 reso for dx9, but if you lower the reso to 1280 x 720 i average around 42fps on a mixture of gamer and enthusiast settings, highly

playable and feels smooth. Running at dx10 for this same reso I avg 22fps, in my book unplayable.

The new ati series will come one day but really you wait for that then a few months later tech will change again that is the way the world is, ati may start will good ati 5000 cards then release a high end 5000 later.

And don't forget about Nvidia they will make a 300 series too.

you bought the wrong laptop i think, only the m17x supports ati cards of that size, the only cards that work on this laptop it gtx 260m, 240m, 9 series and the ati 3870 and 4670, ati 4850 and 4870 are to big and require a bigger motherboard which is not replacable on the m15x sorry buddy

hey i just got that exact same computer, with a 320gb hard drive, did you change any of the nvidea settings to make the system run faster? I played the crysis demo on low everything, and it was still a bit laggy at some points in time. Thanks

nope, make sure that turbo mode is enabled and that stealth mode is off, mine plays on high settings with 4xAA and 1600x900 res.

I agree at some points it might get a bit laggy but it all depends on the temperature and all.
