Awesome video, a shame it's the genesis version though, the CD version had much better sound & music (really added to the feel of the game). I wish I still had my Sega CD so I could record a longplay of Ecco 2....that game was just amazing.
I passed on this game when I was younger because playing as a dolphin sounded...well...gay. Looking back it's a good thing I did, because the stuff in the game would have severely traumatized my younger self. XD
Maybe I'm being impatient, jumping from one part of the video to the next, but, where's the level where you're rescuing the orca's babies and she's trapped on the other side of a load of boulders? It was the level I could never get past as a kid and want to know how it was done.
Back when I had my MegaDrive, it was a pain in the ass to find games for it where I lived. Now seeing this gem for the first time, I am so damn furious for not having played it at that time. I guess I will have to visit some rom sites now.
I have genuinely been scarred for life from this game. I don't know what those weird creatures are but they've given me a life time fear of squids and the like, an extremely scary game!
Also, I'm curious about how the password system works. Does the game generate unique passwords for every player and store progress in the memory, or do they all already exist programmed in the game with slight differences by how you played? I know some work on all systems, like how NNNNNNNN takes you to Welcome To The Machine. Is that a special code that works for all games, or is there a way to legitimately play the whole game and end up with an NNNNNNNNN when you got there?
Wow, I can't believe I watched the whole thing... but I did. Pretty amazing story. I knew about the freaky machine but never understood everything that led up to it. The one thing that's kind of weird is going back in time to get that globe for the Asterite... if you'd never gone back in time to steal it, it would have had it the whole time... the whole reason it's missing is because you stole it... weird. Why wasn't Ecco around when he went back to the time of the storm to get sucked up?
I GOT stuck at that point towards the end of the game with that creature at 1:03:54, we never knew what happened after, we cheated for the passwords to open a level higher than that by trying millions of random passwords and nnnnnnnn was the password for the level of Welcome to the machine, nice memories!
@zumdidum Me too, I GOT stuck at that point towards the end of the game with that creature at 1:03:54, we never knew what happened after, we cheated for the passwords to open a level higher than that by trying millions of random passwords and nnnnnnnn was the password for the level of Welcome to the machine, nice memories!
@Alevamltd As you know, Stuttering Craig hates Ecco the Dolphin. This has been some running gag for ScrewAttack, who love to beat up a short-lived video-game series that I'd actually take over Sonic any day of the week. After several criticisms for his thoughts on the first Ecco game, Craig's response was a highly sarcastic view on the sequel Tides of Time.
To summarise it: "Oh man, I'm so sorry for bashing Ecco. This game is actually good for all of this awesome stuff. No, Ecco sucks."
i remember having this game when i was like 5 and not having a fucking clue what to do xD I'm really glad I never made it past the first level... o_O I would have had nightmares, and frankly I still find it disturbing now I'm 15.

I bought this game for my son....then got hooked on it myself. Never did beat it, but almost. Got to the part where the octopus (vortex?) was hiding in his little cubby..........managed to get one of the eyes shot out; that was it. I remember the maze to get to the vortex......could do it now, 15 years later. Watching this vid for the first time, getting ready to see the end!!!!! THANK YOU CUBEX55
lol I'll never forget me and my cousin (I was 7 and he was 5) playing this game and we got so scared we turned off the game. We were only on the first level but the music scared us. XD
I was laughing to myself about all the comments that this was a scary game but then I thought about it - this game really DID affect me pretty profoundly as a kid. Every time we went to the beach, I was like "Are the vortex gonna be waiting for me just offshore?" LMAO
This game screwed up my childhood. I just pop in an innocent looking game with a dolphin on the cover. Then I'm playing in an ocean with my family, a pod of fellow dolphins. I figure out that I can talk to dolphins with sonar and learn that fishes are good and stuff like that. Then I get challenged to jump in the sky!
So I take off and leap into the sky...
AND SUDDENLY MY ENTIRE FAMILY GETS SUCKED INTO THE SKY BY A WATER SPOUT, LEAVING ME ALONE IN SHARK INFESTED WATERS!
You have to face a Holy God on Judgment Day(Hebrews 9:27). He counts lust as adultery(Matthew 5:28) and hatred as murder(1 John 3:15). All liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire(Revelation 21:8). No thief will inherit the kingdom of God(1 Corinthians 6:9-11). Jesus Christ is the only way to be saved(John 14:6). YOU MUST REPENT OF YOUR SINS AND SUBMIT TO THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST TO BE SAVED! THERE'S NO OTHER WAY! There's no second chance after death, so repent NOW! Proverbs 29:1

I too had difficulties reading the English dialog so I never quite figured out what I was supposed to do. I played all the levels though with the aid of passwords, which were revealed in some Sega gaming magazine. Loved the music and the aliens in Welcome to the Machine.
Anyways, great longplay, saves me the trouble of playing the game!
Wow. I remember playing this when I was very young but I wasn't scared of it at all. In fact I remember drowning many times just admiring the detail of it.
Wait..Giger aliens kidnapped all the ocean critters? I'm really glad I never made it that far on my game gear as a kid..I'm pretty sure that would have traumatized me XD
when i first saw the game it came with a 3pak sega game for gba i thought it was a normal dolphin game but then i see all these aliens and shit i think H.R.GIGER! and was like omfg this was a game presented to kids which i was and i found it really disturbing
@DNAthePanda it is a very unique plot. It's not.....what anyone would expect out of a dolphin video game. Seriously, you are right. But....I played this thing for years when I was just an 8 year old girl and, I wouldn't have had it any other way. It is a mysterious, oneiric and mature plot. I believe this video game is a gem and I play some of its music on a radio show.
@DNAthePanda (sighs) you know.....I forgot how disturbing "THE TUBE" level was. seriously...you have a point. Especially....that all the electric rods are placed inside that tube to kill the live food that comes in from the ocean to be delivered to the Vortex Queen who feeds every 500 years. Once I was playing this game and I found this glyph (crystal) in one of the atlantis levels and it said that the vortex queen eats but gets hungrier after each feed.
Am I alone in thinking that ending sucked. So glad I didn't put more time into this game, it was stressful enough struggling with the early stages. If I had struggled and completed that game for a few little "well done eco" statements... I may have taken my life haha.
@xToshix I was just about to say "Is it weird but for some reason I find something weirdly scary about these games... apparently I'm not the only one :O
The Dreamcast follow-up to this and Ecco II, Defender of the Future, was still just as tortuous, but in 3D!
In fact, I'm still trying to finish it (taken five years on and off so far). It even has two awesome "hidden" side-on levels reminiscent of the Mega Drive games here :)
lol, I love this game. It was really hard, especially the last few levels, which I cannot beat without cheating! Undercaves (level 3) is tough, but passable - it took me a long time to figure out how to get through it without suffocating!
god damn this game was hard, i swear me and my friends played it for an hour straight just talking to dolphins and we were completely stumped. such a hard game, ninja gaiden has nothing on this game.
Ah memories!I was playing that on a Sega Mester System when I was a kid!Although it was kinda hard and complicated for me, I had so much fun playing this game back then.
This was one of the very first computer games I ever played through to completion. Fantastic music and environmental graphics for the time, also rather sophisticated in terms of gameplay. Excellent lonplay, as always.
I love this game very much, I still have my copy. Some of the best music on any video game.

It just...gave me chills.

I remember renting this game and not figuring out I had to jump high out of the water at the beginning till the day I had to return it.

Am I alone in thinking that ending sucked. So glad I didn't put more time into this game, it was stressful enough struggling with the early stages. If I had struggled and completed that game for a few little "well done eco" statements... I may have taken my life haha.

Whoa... That waterspout at 1:34 is kinda freaky and weird!

Ah ah ah no, the follow on was Ecco Tides Of Time :D Love that game to this day
PyramidHead2000 2 years ago 2
Misread; follow-up to this and Ecco II, [was the game on the Dreamcast called] DotF. Heh.
I know Ecco II was Tides of Time, as it wasn't on the Dreamcast ;)

never beat the first screen

lol, I love this game. It was really hard, especially the last few levels, which I cannot beat without cheating! Undercaves (level 3) is tough, but passable - it took me a long time to figure out how to get through it without suffocating!

i'm amazed this guy had the patience to play this whole game in one sitting, moving shit and getting past obstacles gets so frustrating after a while
mikexlong 2 years ago 4
Not really in one sitting - thanks to savestates you save any time ;)

Lol, I never got past through 3rd stage!
But this game is FREAKING sweet!
But I like Ecco Jr. better, because this game is hard as to poop diaria out my dick!
slavko123496 2 years ago
god damn this game was hard, i swear me and my friends played it for an hour straight just talking to dolphins and we were completely stumped. such a hard game, ninja gaiden has nothing on this game.

Ahhh! Ecco! With Sonic he was my best hero, and I loved the concept of dolphin role. I never passed the second screen! XD
