When bars and bats were bought and people came out in their hundreds to confront the looters the looting stopped.

When it was only the police they were taunted and mocked.

Will we avoid a repeat of these riots by having a bigger police presence with more equipment? How much will that cost us in these difficult times? Will it simply escalate the problem?

How about organising local crime prevention groups. Who's going to attempt to loot knowing they face a fast response from ten blokes with bats?
