@marceleugenehunter The label says only it's an aluminum snare, 14"x6,5" and it's apparently been manufactured in 05/1997. There's no further series name or anything and I don't have the order confirmation anymore. The head must be a Powerstroke 3. These are like clear ambassadors, with an underlay to dampen overtones. (it's probably not even meant to be a snare head, but sometimes I just put on what I've got lying around in 14", no matter what).
You got it good bro. Ive seen you do some 10000 days stuff flawlessly with those mandalas! Very good. I have a mandala pad but I dont have anything to make it work yet.
Great job! A bit too stiff on that tricky part from 4:50 onwards, if I have to name a posible are of improvement. Less fom the arm, more from the fingers!
hey man i REALLY enjoy you're videos. i've always wanted to see danny carey playing all the songs he uses electric pads on upclose but there arent really any videos. thanks
@bryantmcrae144 I've been playing from ~1992 to 2001 and since '07, self-taught on the drums, but I've been to music school from about age 8-12, learning keyboard/organ playing and some basics like score reading/writing, etc

Not critique your drums what so ever, (cause I think they sounds great!), but does danny carry tune his toms that high? I think he does, but his first two toms are alot smaller, correct? just curious.
@thekillingjoke Indeed, I suppose good observation :) haha. Yeah, his toms really are so small. But This is an older video of course. I watched your new right in two video. Its quite nice. Your snare doesnt seem to sound nearly as high tuned as Danny's of course, but I still LOVED the video. I love all of your videos to be honest.!
just a couple of advices, seen that your work is REALLY REALLY good, I try to share the things you did differently: the part at 7:40 the strokes between the crashes are the first at high tom and the other 2 at snare drum, not all 3 snare drum;) and anyway I really suggest you to work on double strokes to do the rolls snare-crashes that he does in the 2"soloish" parts (3:17-3:58 and 5:50-6:30),and actually Danny (and me :)) does the part at 4:10 with doubles too (you know, the 5/8 thing) AWESOME btw
@KillerDrummer88 yeah, I've got some weaknesses with certain rudiments, because I've never had any drum education and am completely self-taught. A teacher might have locked me in just with a snare and two sticks early on. ;-) Thanks, though, much appreciated.
I think you, tbartels007 and MachineGunSmith should get together and have a massive drum duel. And then post it on YouTube. The only problem with that is that the three of you would be committing mass murder since anyone that watched would die due to having their head explode from the epic awesomeness of it. Btw, that is one helluva nice sounding snare.
it's funny how u see drum, bass and guitar covers of tool but u never see a vocal cover. i guess it would be difficult to master the mjk creepy singing stance and voice. great cover by the way!
Damn... I have the utmost respect for anyone who can pull off this piece of art, with it's complex polyrythms and it's demands for endurance. With just a few minor snafu's (and I mean very minor), you did a badass job with it! I know that I can't play it! ;)
Looks like too much concentration on 4:48 to 5:28 lol dont use too much wrist movements, gotta learn those good techniques with grips using your fingers aswell
@LordxOfxThexDrums try to slowly practice each hand/foot seperately, then both hands only, both feet only, both hands and one foot, both feet and one hand... and at some point it hopefully will miraculously "click" in your head and you'll be able to play the full thing. That's how I practice those polyrhythm parts. But you have to make sure you can conveniently reach all toms and don't have to strech or turn your back too much.
Good man! You nailed the mini drum solo thingy right before the breakdown at the end. I love that bit. Used to play this song back in the day and know that that part is uber satisfying. Also good job on the 5 over 4 part part. Such a bitch of a groove but you dominated. Great job :)
Hey man nice work!! especially with managing the 4 16th kicks in the 5/8 section with a single pedal!! I'm currently working on mastering this (In the past I have cheated using a heel/toe action between my double kick and hi-hat trigger). I see (In your other videos) you have the Carey signature sonor snare now....sounds nice, maybe I will have to invest soon....
sweet pedal!!!!! how do u rank it? im looking at upgrading.... i just got an old school chain driven Gibraltar dbb kick from 1998..... still goes alright for its age
@WXXDZY it's a fine pedal, i've got no complaints. it has those thick iron letters printed on the pedal surface, though - and i always play bare-footed, so the first few days have been quite painful. without shoes it can be a little uncomfortable, but i'm used to it now.
do u guys play in any band?, and could u please explain me how u tune your drums, u follow any system, u tight more the resonant than the batters, and how do u tune your snare to sound exactly like dannys , u have your resonant strainer loose or tight, sorry for the tons of questions and thanks.
@ricardoieci no band, but i'm in the songwriting phase for a little recording projct, will yet take a while though. i'm really no drum tuning expert and don't have a system. but i try to tune the batters and resonants so that there's an even tom pitch that doesn't go up or down. the strainer tension is somwhere "in between", not very loose or tight. in the old vids the snare doen't sound very carey-ish, and in the new ones it does just because it's the same brand/type of snare now.
never get tired of watching you vids man, your drums sound great, have u any mufflin in you bass drun?, and when u say u use automation for the toms, what u mean?
@ricardoieci Now I've got a thick rubber mat in the bass drum, like the ones to put under washing machines for noise reduction; and a small woolen blanket.
Samplitude has an "automation" feature, you can draw effect curves for volume, panning, etc. into the recorded tracks with it. I draw volume curves for each tom and set the curve to zero volume when the tom's not being played, and pull up the volume for each tom hit.
@ricardoieci that's hard to say without hearing anything. there might be a hundred reasons, and EQing is just one. Can you upload something? Just the audio would be enough, if you don't have a cam.
@ricardoieci I don't use plugins except Battery for the mandalas. I like to put a little compression to most mics, not too much though. I also use a lot of volume automation for all toms - the tom tracks are muted unless I play the toms, to keep unnecessary track bleedthrough out of the mix. EQ: high- and lowend boost for the bassdrum, lowcut on the overheads and a little EQ to support the natural tom/snare tones. This vid hasn't the best sound, though, I like the new one of vicarious better.
dude, very very nice. the one and only thing i would say is that in the break down, your kicks (the four of them) are just barely fast. other than that, fantastic performance
This guy is nowhere near the best on youtube, at least 3-4 times he fucked up and either stopped or did that poor roll/snare thing. Sorry man but this isnt THAt good
@thekillingjoke THIS DESERVES ANYWHERE FROM A MILLION TO 6 BILLION VIEWS MAN, BEST COVER I'VE SEEN OF THIS SONG :) AWESOME JOB! AND YOUR TOMS SOUND AMAZING!
verey good man that was an amazing cover....but can i give u a little tip try tuning the snare just a little higher it sounds a little too garagey no offense
awsome dude now all you gotta do is figure out a way of making danny carrey disapear with out being directly connected and manipulate your way into being his replacement... i also had a plan about you sewing his face on yours.. but.. well the point is good job :)
buenisima, con el 99% de los detalles del tema felicitaciones, aunque en la parte 4.47m te sale un poco trabado el golpe de la caja, es por que es bien cabron el ritmo pero super bien
It's mostly listening to the song, and if i'm not sure about how a certain part is played I look for live videos on youtube and any bits and pieces I can find. I use tabs only as a second (or third, fourth...) opinion if I still have doubts.
I think 5:30 to 6:30 is the most difficult part to memorize, just because it's so much stuff going on and no two bars are the same. 4:47 as a concept is a little easier to get a grip on, but it may be hardest one to really master, yes. I still tend to get a little stiff on that part.
AWESOME JOB MAN!! good shit, my one tip (not like i feel all mighty enough to tip someone who is doing a fine job on their own) but that middle section with the open hats. try doing the beat without the open hits. then try doing it with eliminating or simplifying the kick part. or work on simplifying it anyway that makes it easier for yourself to phrase and piece together in your head. That worked for me anyway.
Fuck. Yes.

@Naabenstadt Really? If there's one part I'm 99,99% certain about, it's this one. What do you think is correct?
thekillingjoke 1 year ago
@thekillingjoke
With the toms I've seen many people go slightly more linear, so I think it's something like this on a standard 3 tom setup:
K K HT HT FT MT FT FT FT FT
K HT FT K MT FT K FT FT K
K is kickdrum, Ht is high tom, Mt is mid tom and Ft is floor tom.
Thenerdydrummerguy 1 year ago

Trav4011 1 year ago
- Finally someone who can actually play the verse. Great work on the song, but a couple things I'm gonna point out.
First, you need to tighten the resonator on your snare, because at 3:48, it sounded like a highly tuned tom.
Second, you gotta start using rim shots on your snare, it's the loudest part of your kit, but not if your only hitting the head.
And last, heel toe. During the verse you were using your double pedal alot. So I say take the left pedal off and work with a single pedal.

awesome video, what kind and what sizes are your cymbals?

Do u use any plugins for recording?, any advice about drum eq, thanks. And great drumming.
ricardoieci 1 year ago
@ricardoieci I don't use plugins except Battery for the mandalas. I like to put a little compression to most mics, not too much though. I also use a lot of volume automation for all toms - the tom tracks are muted unless I play the toms, to keep unnecessary track bleedthrough out of the mix. EQ: high- and lowend boost for the bassdrum, lowcut on the overheads and a little EQ to support the natural tom/snare tones. This vid hasn't the best sound, though, I like the new one of vicarious better.

how do you record your drums ?, it sounds sick.

@ricardoieci with an audio interface (RME Fireface 800) into a notebook running Samplitude.

Much Respect for your Patience to learn this complex Track! Nice Greets from a European Drummer Colleague!

dude, very very nice. the one and only thing i would say is that in the break down, your kicks (the four of them) are just barely fast. other than that, fantastic performance

This guy is nowhere near the best on youtube, at least 3-4 times he fucked up and either stopped or did that poor roll/snare thing. Sorry man but this isnt THAt good

awsome dude now all you gotta do is figure out a way of making danny carrey disapear with out being directly connected and manipulate your way into being his replacement... i also had a plan about you sewing his face on yours.. but.. well the point is good job :)

Wicked, man. Not a massive fan of the Pinstripe on the snare, but can't argue with the drumming. Top marks from me

buenisima, con el 99% de los detalles del tema felicitaciones, aunque en la parte 4.47m te sale un poco trabado el golpe de la caja, es por que es bien cabron el ritmo pero super bien

You pretty much nailed it. I thoroughly enjoy watching your drumming vids. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how technical TOOL's music really is.

nice work dude, i have a question, did you use tabs to learn this song or just hearing??...PD: sorry for my english
DRUMedina 2 years ago
It's mostly listening to the song, and if i'm not sure about how a certain part is played I look for live videos on youtube and any bits and pieces I can find. I use tabs only as a second (or third, fourth...) opinion if I still have doubts.

GROOVEE!! xD

wow....incredible stuff.
Just out of interest, is 4:47 the hardest rhythm in the song?
Great work btw
Ilsdrak 2 years ago
Thanks!
I think 5:30 to 6:30 is the most difficult part to memorize, just because it's so much stuff going on and no two bars are the same. 4:47 as a concept is a little easier to get a grip on, but it may be hardest one to really master, yes. I still tend to get a little stiff on that part.
thekillingjoke 2 years ago
You did an amazing job nontheless keep up the good work. Also were do you get your tabs?

AWESOME JOB MAN!! good shit, my one tip (not like i feel all mighty enough to tip someone who is doing a fine job on their own) but that middle section with the open hats. try doing the beat without the open hits. then try doing it with eliminating or simplifying the kick part. or work on simplifying it anyway that makes it easier for yourself to phrase and piece together in your head. That worked for me anyway.

DUDE !!!! That is fucking amazing !!! Ahh I wish I could find a drummer with talent like this. 5 star's brother !! Keep it up
