This is the "Upper Midland" accent (Minnesota and North Dakota). Very similar to the "Inland North" (Great Lakes--from Milwaukee to Albany) accent. It's funny because when you go a few miles south of the isotope, (like, from Madison, WI to Des Moines, IA), people sound totally different. In fact, when you get into Iowa from places like the Great Lakes region, it begins to sound more like General American, where "college" is pronounced more like college, and "yard", like yard.
By the way--this is the PERFECT caricature of what dialectologists call the "Inland North (U.S. Great Lakes)" accent. Northern Cities Vowel shift: college > callege, accent > ee-uhksent.
Marge, I feel your pain! I only wish I HAD a bowling alley to take the relatives to when they come! We usually head to New Salem to look at that giant cow.
Oh yeah!! They say that all the time! or "just so ya know..."! Yankees think our accents are funny...and some of them ARE...but theirs is funny as hell too! God love 'em! LOL
roboqoretex, I agree Betty and Marge are Da-Bomb. Lets hope for a full length feature. and who knows maybe Hollywood and my Gosh... the stars are the limit!!!
In dialectology, she speaks what is called an Upper Midland accent. "o" as in "pot" sounds more like "a" as in "pat".
