I would also like to know the best time to go, I saw this on Huell Howser, i'd like to take a day to photograph them, but it is a 3 hour drive and I am finding no information on best time to go.
I'm not exactly certain when the best time to go is. We went in early April. My guess is that they'd be best after the rainy, cooler seasons, and drier after months of warm weather and no precipitation. So yeah, late winter early Spring. But really, this is just a guess. I'd try calling the visitors' center at the Sonny Bono State Park and asking there, just to be sure. Hope that helps.
