I went to the Whisky in 1972 - a normal Thursday night - 2 live bands nothing huge or mega-famous - support were "Seatrain" with an as-yet-unknown outfit called POCO!!!!
@wickedtornado I just repeated what some one else said bc I thought the term they used "white folks" was funny. Those was not my words. The person you should address ur statement to is the guy who left the comment in the first place. I just think the term "white folks" is a funny one. Btw lol lady bros
Most importantly you don't see one fat ass there. Smaller portions, rigourous dancing people were not as lazy then. I live near a high school and today's teens all look like beached whales!
@bloodpoet9999 Ahhh...'scuse me there, blood. It seems like it ain't just white folks dancing away...I saw bros and lady bros out there too. And it seems they were smiling just as much as anybody else. I kind of think that is what The Good Lord had in mind for humanity at this point in our soul growth.....everybody of every persuasion forgetting their troubles for a moment...dancing away. Working the kinks and internal aggressions out for awhile, ready to take on another day in the morning.
The Whisky A-Go-Go was an obscure place until it was put on the map by the 1965 NBC show, "Hullabaloo" It was created to fit the singer Johnny Rivers, who was the in-house singer at the time. Hullabaloo recreated the set to resemble Whisky A-Go-Go. It was because of the frantic dancing from one of the go-go dancers on the show, Lada Edmund, Jr. that the Go-Go scene took off and WAGG because the icon landmark it did.
@MrKTVM Don't forget that Billy Lee Riley was the other in-house singer that worked with Johnny. See "Hi-Heel Sneakers" for some footage. Billy also played harmonica on a few of Johnny's bigger songs.
LOL. You guys n gals, it's all the same. Cops still bust up the fun, that has never changed. I have had fun over several decades and I hope to see the next couple of decades. But maybe the sixties was a standout time. I love the music in all its varieties. Just have fun where you're at and keep your love for them oldies but goodies too. Peace!
In the early 1980s I worked with a woman whose mother had been a go-go dancer at the Whiskey A Go-Go during this period. My worker had been a little girl at the time, and when her mother came to pick her up at preschool, the other kids said she looked like a "witch" because of her long white fingernails, her bleached and teased hair, and her white lipstick.
@hebneh Yeah, and don't forget her tall, white "go-go" boots that were standard fare for that time. With the right colored mini-skirt on the right type of body...those boots could look pretty damn tough. Don't worry....that entire fashion will be back in style soon enough. It's a cool, clean, sexy look. Personally, I'm looking forward to the day when that look comes back around. Oh, and long, straight hair on the girls or better yet..a long pony-tail has ALWAYS turned me on big-time. Yooowww!
These people know how to dance better than a lot of the videos of "go-go" from that era, but I'm still reminded of the comment in some 60s book, maybe the Edie Sedgewick biography, that white people "danced like weird chickens".
@calico992 Not really true. Different people would have been happier in a different moment in time. Personally I would have quite like the middle ages but if not then maybe 60s california would have been groovy too.. On the other hand. I am just glad to have avoided the 70s
i was born way too late.. you can't find a good club anymore that will play old school rock, funk or soul to just groove to. every guy now just wants to grind on you with his denim cock.. shiiiiiiit....

@lulugemini Yes, that is Joey Heatherton...in 1965 on the premierer episode of NBC's "Hullabaloo," she introduced America to the dance, "The Hullabaloo." It didn't catch on, but the Hullabaloo A Go-Go scene did and made WAGG an icon landmark.
In retrospect this seems more fun than the slam dancing we were doing at the Whiskey 13-14 years later...

To-Do List:
1. Build time machine.
2. Go back 30 years, get my twenties back.
3. Go back another 15 years.
4. Find that girl @ 2:04.
NB: Bring my iPhone with me, so I can convince people that I'm from Andromeda.

No idiot DJ's needed - the dancer had no problem operating the record player herself.

@xXOneHotLennonXx And the second song is Twist and Shout, though I don't know if it's the Beatles' version. They covered it in 1964, so it's likely!

@damnhippie16 The Beatles covered it in 1962 :) This one isn't theirs :)
