i need a bike that can do it all. it doesnt have to be great at everything but bearable at most stuff. I want to be able to this stuff but also commute 20 minutes to werk as well so not too much bobbing and not ridiculouslly heavy im like 5'10 and 145 pounds so im pretty light any recommendations?

@1q3er5 like IBikeSA says, the commute would be easier on a lighter bike. Youd get there quickest on a pupose-built roadbike. From there, introducing suspension components and upgrading brakes (calliper brakes; V brakes; 6 - 9" disk brake rotors; cable or hydraulic operation; 2, 4 or 6 hydraulic pistons per calliper) will slow you down on the road and when climbing trails. The 'upgraded' components pay for themselves on the downhillls - you hit stuff quicker and brake later and harder for turns.

When you consider the range of parts available for you to customise your bike, the possibilities are endless. That said, buy something that works for you now. You can then choose which bits get upgraded - instead of the manufacturer deciding which are the best brakes, forks and handlebars for you. Consider second-hand. Take a look at pinkbike.com's buy/sell section.

I've seen people decree honestly, truly ludicrous stuff in online forums. There's no substitute for rocking up at 2 or 3 bikeshops and asking them your questions, exactly like you did on here. They're paid partly for their expertise. They're also paid to sell things to you, so do visit more than 1 shop. Good luck, let me know what you go for.

@TheCurrynader94 Go to your local bike shops. Explain what you want to use your new bike for and roughly what you have to spend. Get advice. Try different styles and sizes. Make a note of the bike you want. Get your debit card out and shop online. Sounds sly but it can save you anywhere from fifty bucks to a thousand or more. Good luck!
