To me, it's crazy that you can get unemployment benefits if you voluntarily resign from a perfectly good job. You shouldn't be working for the public school system, much less in charge of it, if you'd rather sell out for close to a million bucks than help kids make a life for themselves. She should be ashamed of herself.
I wish they would reform our schools. No Child Left Behind took away all autonomy of teachers. They still get paid shitty wages, they have an enormous workload thanks to weekly tests and paperwork, and they get yelled at for having low scores by administrators that don't do anything but sit on their ass and collect a fat paycheck.
Teachers aren't allowed to form a lesson plan anymore so it is silly to blame them for bad scores. To top it off, we PAY companies to develop said crappy curriculum.

I actually work in unemployment appeals and at least in my state you CAN receive unemployment benefits if you resign from your job as long as you can prove that you were presented with the choice of quitting or being immediately fired. However, any severance payments, unused vacation time, etc count against your benefits and you would be disqualified for the number of weeks equivalent to the dollar amount of those payments. Don't worry, she's not getting a check for a long, long time.

I am a student of Philadelphia public schools, this woman totally mismanaged the money, used loans to help out her friends companies instead of giving it to the schools and therefore making massive cuts have to happen even more than the ones that are already happening all over the country. People were BEGGING for her to leave, she finally did with the check- meanwhile while the district is scrambling to get back on it's feet, she goes and does this. It was a huge slap in the face to us students.

You do not qualify for unemployment when you resign from a position. The economic definition of unemployed is someone who desires to work but cannot find employment. A person who is working and then voluntarily stops is not considered unemployed, but is considered to have exited the labor market. If you are fired, however, you are elligible for unemployment because you do desire to work. Trust me, I'm unemployed right now.

The school superintendent for my school district (Syosset Central School District - New York) makes 350,000ish a year, plus MASSIVE benefits - like a driver to and from her house in Westchester b/c she's legally blind. Even Gov. Cuomo mentioned her outrageous (disastrous) pay.

Unemployment needs to be private. This way you can account for many different variables in the calculation of unemployment. Some jobs are temporary so their unemployment should be more expensive. Some jobs are more permanent so their unemployment should be cheaper. You can pay more to be covered for more years or pay less to be covered for less. It does not matter if you rich or poor you will have it according to your needed. The free market will make it cheaper to afford.
The free market is the best solution to this problem. The government and the fed simply screw everything up. Money will not be so cheap so it will not be lavished on the top employees as much. It will be easier for business to come into existence so there will be more business and more competition. If labor is too cheap it will move to somewhere else. If it is too expensive then the companies will not be able to spend as much on other expenses.
People like that superintendent (and a lot of them are like that in public schools) can eat shit and die. My parents are both teachers and so is my girlfriend. While you see teachers get shit on and they have to worry about being let go because there is "no money" you have superintendents being payed like they are fucking CEOs on Wallstreet --- WTF do we need OCCUPY PUBLIC SCHOOLS STREET to happen next?

Abolish the Dept of Education. To continue to waste more and more money on it, expecting things to change is the very definition of insanity. Also, end all government student loans (note I said government) the government loans have a backward effect, causing higher price for tuition. Oh, you can't afford school on your own now that we've raised tuition again? That's ok, just go down to student services and fill out some government forms... there... problem solved. ^-^

You quit, or get fired, you get NOTHING!
As far as I know, you can only qualify for unemployment if you were laid off.
Many people apply anyway just to see if their company fais to respond, and they get it.

I'm in charge of a department at work and trust me, we have to keep documentation to make certain we can fight people because they will try to challenge us. I'm sure though, that there are instances where a firing is unjust and therefore, that person should get their unemployment if not their job back.

How much money you have is and should be irrelevant towards getting unemployment support or not.
If she was denied because of severance pay everybody else would too and most often it would hurt unintended people that didnt get 1mill.
Only thing I thought was strange is that she would get it early even if she left her job willingly. Where I live you get it strait away if its NOT voluntarily. Down sizing, fired etc. If you leave by your own accord you have to wait about 6 weeks, I think.

I can't tell you how many of these scumbags I've met here in up state NY. One keeps a "residence" in PA, to avoid taxes in NY. You do not qualify for unemployment when you resign from a position. The economic definition of unemployed is someone who desires to work but cannot find employment. A person who is working and then voluntarily stops is not considered unemployed, but is considered to have exited the labor market. If you are fired, however, you are elligible for unemployment because you do desire to work. Trust me, I'm unemployed right now.

If you don't like the standards set by current unemployment insurance policy, then advocate for that to be changed. But there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of government programs available. Condemning her for taking advantage of her options is absurd. It would be like getting angry at someone for accepting a tax refund because they "already get paid enough in the first place".

The school superintendent for my school district (Syosset Central School District - New York) makes 350,000ish a year, plus MASSIVE benefits - like a driver to and from her house in Westchester b/c she's legally blind. Even Gov. Cuomo mentioned her outrageous (disastrous) pay.

Unemployment needs to be private. This way you can account for many different variables in the calculation of unemployment. Some jobs are temporary so their unemployment should be more expensive. Some jobs are more permanent so their unemployment should be cheaper. You can pay more to be covered for more years or pay less to be covered for less. It does not matter if you rich or poor you will have it according to your needed. The free market will make it cheaper to afford.

The free market is the best solution to this problem. The government and the fed simply screw everything up. Money will not be so cheap so it will not be lavished on the top employees as much. It will be easier for business to come into existence so there will be more business and more competition. If labor is too cheap it will move to somewhere else. If it is too expensive then the companies will not be able to spend as much on other expenses.
