i have a male and he sometimes sits up strait ! virtical like a stick pleas help me is he sick and he also sits in weird positions motionless !!!!! pleas help me i dont want him to die
My betas cought a different kind of desease and it was from the workers of Petsmart for not cleaning the nets and we had them get snailes for us so we could have bottom feeders in the tank and when we put the snails in about 5 days later my two betas got extremly sick they had this whiteish cottony stuff on their scales and my male betta died first then my female and my other fishes died and now the snails are dead and they had that weird cotton like stuff on them. Now I have only one fish left.
@dirtay75 Old comment, but I thought I'd reply since I've dealt with a large case of dropsy.
While dropsy itself is not contagious, what caused it probably is, so the rest of them very well could end up getting it. The best thing you can do is keep the water clean and stay away from any frozen foods that may have caused the problem.
Dropsy is horrible. Worst thing anyone with fish can encounter.
I'm so sorry, mine didn't make it. I wish you well with yours! I have yet to figure out how to cure the dropsy, I've luckily only had this one fish with the problem.
dropsy is a more massive internal infection.this disease is not considered contagious. Most cases of dropsy are fatal. However,if the fish is placed in a quarantine tank and treated with antibiotic or a bacterial remedy, than the fish can make a full recovery in less than a week. The cause of this disease maybe introduced through food or dirty water!!!!!!
Do you have a filter in your tank?If you do turn it off. She'll be up and around in couple days.I don't think you know what sickness that betta has.You know you can have more than one female in your tank.maybe she's just bored.Melafix?those are for fungus control.Won't work.
Did you test your water parameters? Rather than dumping in a bunch of meds, I'd always recommend doing large water changes with same-temp dechlor'd water and a bit of salt. She looked like she was suffering from high ammonia. We betta folks need to get better about testing water and understanding the nitrogen cycle..... Sorry she didn't make it.
I've never heard that before, but I have heard that if a female gets too full of eggs, she may very well build her own nest and lay eggs herself with no males around...course they will never hatch. I've also heard about many people who keep a female tank that live for a long time without any males/spawning.
Well next time you get a betta that gets dropsy, DO NOT put aquarium salt in the water. Aquarium salt will only make them bloat up more. Use epsom salt. It helps with the bloating. The recommended dose is 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. And if the betta is still eating and will actually eat it, give it internal bacterial food since that is what causes dropsy most of the time. If they're not eating, use tetracycline.
Ive had alot bettas die b/c of internal infections that caused dropsy and only had success with keeping 1 of them alive b/c I caught it VERY early. Her scales were barely starting to pinecone. 1st,I did epsom salt baths (1tbsp per half gal),that didnt do anything, then I put the epsom salt in the tank along w/ tetracycline for 2weeks and it brought the bloating down.
Doing all of that may still not prevent death unfortunatly :(
I'm so sorry your little betta died though. She was a pretty one.
Thank you so much for the words! yeah she was a good one, helped with the eggs and was a very personable fish (flaring at me and things when she was hungry) I do have the epsom salt now for in case (hopefully never). but yeah learned that too thanks:) Tank salt for maintinence, epsom for sickness...got it:)
yeah, we tried that as well :( With the maracyn and maracyn 2, but I think she was too far gone. now at least I know what to look for in the beginning.

Dropsy is a fatal disease for Bettas. There's no known cure, unfortunately. Treating Dropsy is pretty much useless. It's heart breaking.
