If Sugar Ray won this, he would be the only person to hold 4 of the then 8 World titles... His named might as well have been cemented on #1 P4P. It pretty much already is, but it would be more inarguable if he won this.
@crowley0312 Now a day its alot easier to be a 8 world title winner than it was in SRR era... It's silly like a mere 5lbs more and you're into another weight division in some cases.
Heres my list of lightheavies that robinson 6' wouldve lost to easily Charles, Moore, Tunney, greb foster, billy conn im sure there are others. robinson himself knew hed get killed fighting vs those guys rocky, 5'10" particularly wouldve busted his head.. heres guys robinson could beat at lightheavy roy jones-major weakness getting knocked out 4 times, galendez, sadd mahamud,
SRR didn't need to hurt Maxim, you don't need to score a KO to win, all he needed to do was outpoint him, which he was doing, very easily. Maxim weighed 16 lbs heavier than Robinson in this fight, Robinson beat Lamotta when Jake was 16 lbs heavier than Sugar in their 3rd fight , this proves that weight is not that imperative with SRR, he was very capable of beating people who outweighed him. Lamotta, by the way, was also a much better fighter than Maxim, the heat beat SRR.
Like I said before, Robinson beat Lamotta when he was outweighed by 16 lbs, the same difference in weight that Maxim had. So, again, it was the heat that beat him. Robinson had a substantial lead on points by the time he couldn't come out. Pacquiao has beaten men that have outweighed him, so weight classes don't mean much, its mostly about the fighter.
Seattle doesn't know about weight classes? What does that mean?
For some reason, you seem to be unable to comprehend the fact that a welterweight beating a middleweight, which Robinson did, is the same as a middleweight beating a light heavyweight. Granted, the welterweight limit is 147, but Robinson weighed in at 144 for his fight against Lamotta who was 160. That is 16 pounds! so stop saying Robinson couldn't beat people above his weight, it is factually incorrect. Also, I don't fight with my sister, men shouldn't hit women, if you didnt know
LOL, you say some random shit. When did I say I was a boxing expert?
I know Maxim was taller than Lamotta, all I said was the weight difference was the same and its true. Make whatever strange comments you want, but I am right. THE WEIGHT DIFFERENCE WAS THE SAME!
At 7:29 Robinson shows another sign that his coordination may be affected.
He starts to throw a right to the body, then strangely stops in the middle of it, leaving himself WIDE open. He never did such things in other fights.
lol guys he won the light heavy weight title lol know your history lol he won with a knockout and he was tired and his trainer said one more round and sugar ray went out to fight 1 more round and did it with a TKO
I wonder why Robinson took this fight. If he won, would he have given up the Middleweight Title and then fought boxers who were a stone heavier?
Perhaps he just wanted to prove a point by becoming a triple World Champion and then relinquish the Light Heavyweight Title after beating Maxim. I would have thought there was more money in the Middleweight division anyway.
thxs for the upload man great footage, robinson should be up there with armstrong for his welterweight and middleweight and so close light heavy weight accomplishments

@POLChelseaFC True, but a lot of the "Super" and "Light" divisions have existed longer than most people think. Still an impressive accomplishment.

Sugar Ray would have won this fight, had it not been for the 100 degree heat wave. He collapsed in his corner.

Sugar Ray Robinson was an awesome fighter. Reminds me of Roy Jones at HW.
Noone was ever like Robbo.

At 7:58 Robinson lands a good right uppercut in close.
It has NO effect on Maxim.
Robinson can't hurt Maxim. And he is using up LOTS of his gas tank.

@2pacinseattle makes clueless comments.
Maxim lost a 15 round decision to Ezzard Charles for the heavyweight title.
Maxim lost two decisions to Jersey Joe Walcott.
Maxim fought heavyweights regularly.
Rosinson ventured too far out of his natural weight class in trying to fight Maxim and he learned his lesson.
seattle doesn't know that there are weight classes in boxing.

like @2pacinseattle said before, he doesn't know the difference between a middleweight and a lightheavyweight.
The difference is FIFTEEN POUNDS.
marcxopoco 11 months ago
@marcxopoco
Once again, Robinson beat Lamotta when he was outweighed by 16 POUNDS!!!
That is more than 15 pounds, which is the difference between middleweight and welterweight.
I guess you struggle to interpret information.
2pacinseattle 11 months ago
@2pacinseattle is clueless.
Maxim was 6 feet tall. He had the bone structure of a heavyweight.
LaMotta was 5'7" and fought his entire career as a middleweight.
2pack doesn't know the difference between a middleweight and a lightheavyweight.
Robinson learned the difference when he fought Maxim.
marcxopoco 11 months ago
@marcxopoco
You're quite thick.
Weight is weight, 16 pounds difference when he beat Lamotta, 15 pounds difference when he lost to Maxim.
2pacinseattle 11 months ago
Halfwit @2pacinseattle doesn't know the difference betwen fight a middleweight and fighting a lightheavyweight.
That's because he never had a fight with his own sister.

Clueless leftwing youtube "boxing expert" [LOL] @2pacinseattle should stick to picketing at "peace" protests.
Six feet tall, 175 pound Joey Maxim was not 5"7', 160 pound Jake LaMotta.

Robinson is already looking bad at 5:43 when he misses a very sloppy right hand badly.
EVERY TIME they get in close Robinson has to wrestle with a strong 175 pounder.
And while Maxim was not considered a big puncher, Robinson was getting hit here by a championship 175 pounder.

It's a shame there was no rematch, Robinson would have won it easily. Apparently he took the defeat against Maxim as an omen and retired.
dcasey77 1 year ago
Robinson learned he had no knockout punch against a top level 175 pounder like Maxim.
He never went near another 175 pounder again.
The right hand Robinson lands at 2:51 would have knocked out any middleweight.
But he was fighting a very strong 175 pounder.
Maxim fought Ezzard Charles 15 rounds for the heavyweight title.
He fought Jersey Joe Walcott twice without getting KO'd.
He was too big and strong for Robinson.
That's why they have weight classes in boxing.
marcxopoco 1 year ago
@marcxopoco Wow, what a patronising response...
Robinson didn't need to knock out Maxim, he just needed to outpoint him. Robinson was a mile ahead on points.
If they had fought again when there wasn't a heatwave, Robinson would have easily outpointed him.
You can say what you like about weight classes but it was the heat that caused Robinson to lose.
dcasey77 1 year ago
@dcasey77 doesn't know that Robinson never went near another 175 pounder again.
THAT is Robinson's own comment on this fight.
Promoters would have been happy making money having Robinson fight for the 175 title after his failure against Maxim.
But he wanted no part of that.
He had enough trouble with strong 160 pounders.
Fighting a top level 175 pounder was beyond him.
marcxopoco 1 year ago
@marcxopoco Actually, I do know he never fought a light heavyweight again.,,
I'm not disputing that.
Fighting a top Light Heavyweight was clearly not beyond him.
Which fighter had an unassailable points lead? Robinson or Maxim?
Why was Ruby Goldstein replaced by another referee?
Are you now going to say it's because refereeing Light Heavyweights was beyond Goldstein??

Youtube "boxing expert" @dcasey77 thinks Joey Maxim had air conditioning in his corner.
