  • just picked up a 1/2" bowl gouge and it sure seem big. Is that a 1/4" bowl gouge you're using? looks smaller than a 3/8". neat little project btw.

  • @hendu3270 This is a 1/4" bowl gouge.

  • My name is Nikola.I am from Croatia.I watch your videos every day.In our countri we have not wax and mineral oil.I will be grateful if you send me one box of wax.If that is possibile! Nikola Mazarekić

  • beautiful. well made

  • Ohhh.bet that's nice!

  • I have watched almost all of your videos.you do a great job on everything. I just got a lathe about the same size a yours. where do you get all of your wood? I live way in the country so I cut down about all of my wood. The bad thing is is that it is almost always either hedge(which is very hard but is beautiful if it is done right), oak, pine, or cedar. And sometimes walnut.

  • @080697123 I get alot of wood off the beach. I live on the west coast.

  • Love the video. Now I know how to make a box and it's a lot of fun. My question is, what is the paste and is that sanding paper you are using with it?

  • @richstell It's paste wax and mineral oil I use it as a finish.

  • I thought apple box as in storing an apple (like a lunch box). Oh well, I still am going to make it for storing an apple and gift it to someone who eats apples.

  • Nice work! I think, though, you should have finalized the width of the whole box before you cut the lid. That way, you didn't have to constantly check you bottom with the lid.

  • @Vicriderforlife bravo majstoreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • dude you and that rag make me nervous. its just a matter of time until it catches and you lose some fingers

  • @TheDrfeltersnatch I only use paper towels. Yes cloth rags are very dangerous to use on the lathe.

  • that is an awesome box, why you called it an apple box ?

  • I used apple wood sorry I should rename the video.

    Carl

  • what chuck is that and were can i get it? my chuck is not spinning the wood true

  • It's a Nova chuck you can find there at Woodcraft.

  • I've watched a few box turning videos so far. No one ever tells what the size of the wood they start with is or the size of finished product. I don't have any large type logs largest I have in shop is 2" just trying to figure out if I laminate some stock up what size I should go for.

  • The box in this video, I started out with a piece 5 inches long and about 3 inches around. so with some 2" wood you could laminate some pieces and make some nice little boxes.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • @haydenHD I found a piece of mahogany 3" today and turned one out. I went a little long for the first time but now I'll be doing some glue ups 3x5. Good video though was no problem turning one out. Once this is mastered then it will be on to a tea box.

  • Sounds good.

  • I just had to watch this video again. I thought maybe I might see where I went wrong while making mine. You make it look too easy. LOL. I know it's not though. Anyways I was making one out of black walnut. After many weeks of waiting for it to dry a little more so I could finish turning it. I was having visions of this beautiful little black walnut box so nice and shiny. Well I put it back in the chuck and the moment I touched the tool to it, it exploded. I was heart broken. Maybe the next time

  • Sorry to hear about the black walnut. I made another box today. It blew apart. I will have a video up on that one in couple of weeks. It happens to all of us.

  • @haydenHD a couple years ago i was making a bowl out of a paralam, engineered lumber made from wood strips> my chuck wasn't on as hard as i wanted and next thing i knew, it went flying up over my head, now i double check the chuck more often

  • Hi Carl, yes iam fine thanks must get back to woodturning had lots of work to do but ok now i hope ? keep up the good turning carl all the best john uk.

  • Glad to hear your doing well. Hope you can get back to the lathe soon :)

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Hi Carl, hope you are well all the best from john uk.

  • I'm doing well John hope all is well with you.

  • do you clean the wood shavings out of you shop or work area

  • Yes, I do. I have dust collection vac that I use to clean them up with and put in yard debrit.

  • do you clean the wood shavings

  • I enjoyed that turning very much. What's the mix of your finish? What kind of wax are you using?

  • It's paste wax and mineral oil I mix it at 10 to 1 10 parts being the paste wax.

  • @haydenHD Thanks! I'm just moving from pens into other turning and your videos are helping a lot. Is the plain minwax paste wax okay? I have a can I use for my tablesaw top. Also, is that ratio by volume or weight?

  • I use "staple" paste wax but minwax should work and by volume but it's not real critical.

  • That apple wood has a nice even soft-looking grain. The finished product is beautiful, as usual. Thanks Carl

  • Thanks Guy. Apple wood is nice to work with.

    Carl

  • Is that CHUCK I'm hearing there a couple of time's haha?

  • I think it's my daughter.

  • Thanx Carl... sure love watching your stuff... I wished I had a heated room as my garage is my shop! It's cold here in Oklahoma City & snowy! We don't have basements either! I got my father in law started in this woodturning thing down in Dallas! Lotta fun! Jeff

  • Thanks Jeff,

That's great we need all the new turners we can get.

    Carl

  • Carl... what are you predominantly using for waste blocks??? Thanks Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

    I think it's fir I use 2x4 scrap.

    Carl

  • awesome stuff......

  • what do you suggest are good tools to buy? im getting some new ones soon and i dont know how much i should be spending

  • I have purchased most all of my turning tools at Woodcraft. The tools there are high quality and prices vary. Look at a Woodcraft near you and then check ebay for similar tools.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Carl,

I enjoy your videos. I am a new turnerand have made a few reasonably nice boxes by copying your every move. All my boxes end up smaller than planed as I have to fix errors along the way.

it would be helpful to new turners if you would briefly show the profile of each tool you are using and mention its size and name and grind if appropriate.

Again, thanks for taking the time to provide such great instruction.

    Jake

  • Jake,

I am sorry, I have been asked this before. When I get into making something I forget about it. Thank you for the reminder. I will try remember to get this info in as I go along.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Carl, it is plain t see that you have been at this for a while. The problem I am having is deciding how to mount my blank. How do you decide which method to use? Either I am doing these things in the wrong order or I am not meant to do lathe work.

  • Carl, do you like those thin tools you use? I was just wondering. They appear extremely sharp and make quick work out of those projects. Great job.

  • Yes most of my projects are small And thay work well.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Avesome project!

I wish i had my own lathe! :)

  • Thanks this was a fun project!

  • Hi carl, superb box you are the best regards john from the uk.

  • Thanks John,

  • Again you make it look so easy!!!!!! Nice box and wow does apple cut so clean!!!

  • Hi i have been turning for about half a year and i am good at doing the outside and making that clean and good looking but i suck at the inside, my bowl gouge will catch and set my tool to the outside and hit the side and snap off my piece which breaks it. any chance you could give me some really in depth turning the inside.

    Thank you

  • hi carl nice job! i will be looking for an apple tree to harvest this fall ......what are your thoughts on sycamore?

  • Thanks Cody,

    I haven't turned sycamore.

  • @haydenHD thanks for the thought i guess i will make a few sycamore videos this winter

  • Sounds good

  • Nice one Carl!

Apple is a wonderful wood. Really clean cuts you got going there!

    Thanks. /Nic.

  • how many tools do you use? [the specific ones for the lathe]

i think i have seen maybe 4 different ones.

do you only use 600 grit sandpaper to finish these?

are they not like other wood projects and have to sand in smoother grits after using rough ones?

these are really neat little projects!

how much do you sell these for, if you do??

  • Hi,

I have a lot of tools for the lathe but for small projects I mostly

use the roughing gouge, bowl gouge, parting tool, spindle gouge,

and the scrappers. I sand through all the grits I start with 120 and go through 600

I'm going to start selling the pieces I make on me website soon, so I cannot give you any prices quite yet.

    Thanks,

    Carl
