remember the time when i used to love watching it load starting with the dark screen followed by the sudden music, then the image starts filling in slowly from side to side starting from the top line, then slowly moving downwards to reveal the ship and eventually the title, the music went perfectly with this image and it still sends shivers down my spine at the age of 31 :D
Just awesome what he did with the SID. Man, what strange emotions listening to this stuff... Rob was like some kind of DEITY to us C64 kids, he really was... Monty on the Run is the best though :D (runs for cover)
sweeeeeet tune.. remember there being a studio recorded version on a tape given away with a magazine. other side of tape was pyjamara or somethin......
Check out skytopia's top C64 tunes and you will find out that there are quite a many of superb quality tracks. The technology itself doesn't matter, the music does. I always prefer those high quality sids to the dull, imaginationless sets of 98% of DJ's today.
So good it's the theme used for the Classic Game Room which is all about retro CONSOLE games!!!!!! Never seen a C64 review on that site ever - but he uses this tune as his theme!
Just get a c64 and get a copy of turbo assembler which is what we all use to make demos on the 64. Just make sure you put in a check for a keypress to jump back to the assembler incase of any errors. And you can get robs Music player somewhere and stick it into turbo assembler and compile.
Whoah...brought some memories back that did. Rob Hubbard was amazing (probably still is). I once had a recording of this direct from the synths...(before it was run through the SID chip)...I think it was on a freebie cassette stuck on the front of a ZZAP64 magazine.
This tune really gets me going, beautifully crafted and executed score for a gr8 game, love the synth and drums combo, really gives me the blood-rush! :)
I remember this one time when I tried to load this, the tape didnt load properly and the music came out all weird, if I can find the recording I did of it I'll put it up here on YT.
This is easily one of the top 3 best C64 SID songs ever composed. In this track, Rob Hubbard tortures the 6581 like no one has ever done before, at times going over the limits. I keep listening to this song every once in a while over the last 20 years and get goosebumps each and every time.
It's a shame gaming music doesn't have as much impact these days as back in the day. How often do you rember the music more than the game or the music made the game.
I think it's because the gaming music today is pretty well like any other music. Big orchestral scores. The gaming music of old had that very distinctive chiptunes character. There were a lot of old C64 and Amiga games that I'd fire up just to listen to the music. Comic Bakery and Druid come to mind as well as Sanxion of course.
@Hardmandez Aye. Last time I felt a soundtrack OWN a presentation was the fr08 from 2000, even if that gfx was fairly good too. But not computer games in a long time.
This is still one of the best gaming memories I have. Epic tune. Rob Hubbard made that thing sing. Current composers could learn a thing or two from this.
I have the actual sanxion music file and have played it from an emulator, I made a trance remix that samples the original sanxion tune, sadly my heart drive crashed and I lost my remix, gutted.
Love the C64 and its music - I'd love to know what version of Sidplay you have because mine sucks!! (And I have not searched/scoured the net for a modern one- EVER!! lol! My bad!)
Anyhoo, gdreyband - did you ever hear this very same track played on the archimedes system? Or maybe they badged it as the fairlight? I think it was released on a B-Side of a cassette from a gaming magazine, i.e demo's on side a, but Sanxion tune on side b!!
No, I've never heard it. But I'd be curious to see if you could find it. There's a user on here named Zeusgb that posts tons of Atari ST demoscene videos. His videos get some negative comments from C64 lovers, but there's some really cool stuff. He has an Atari ST demo with the sanxion loader on it.
As for what player I use, that would be the XMPlay SID player which I think is called SIDPlay. Hope that helps!
I totally agree with cosine303, there were and still are a lot of gifted people out there, but I also have to admit, Rob does it for me. He made tunes that will be forever in my heart, right beside my youth. x
don't forget Galway and many more.. that's the thing though people go on about Hubbard a lot of the time, yet know little of others work.. which is a pity. Do I think anyone is the #1 sid maker? nope.. but I feel some of the people are sometimes not as rated highly.
Stereo, mono, quadrophony-- the sound of SID is just A*W*E*S*O*M*E, no matter what! ;-)
Cheers,
Phoxx.
