  • JILL: You should have left the double jump combination out and then subsitituted the triple jump combo for the double flip at the end

  • Beautiful costume, lovely choice of music and an elegant stlye but way over marked for a double-double combination. Apparently Carlo Fassi walked out half way through the performance after the failed attempt at the triple toe.

Yes, the figures mattered greatly at these Champs. Ito was stunning in the Short and Long and I think Neske was under marked on the Short and Lebedeva too, although it was a cold, emotionless performance.

  • sorry I meant even 5th in the short program.

  • Wow, I didn't realize that she still won the gold after getting 5th in the short program!

Midori Ito: Figures (10th), Short (1st), Free (1st), Final (2nd)

Jill Trenary: Figures (1st), Short (5th), Free (2nd), Final (1st)

This is why figures were eliminated!!!

I do give her credit for pulling it together for the free program, and I'm sure it sucked having to compete against Ito, who is probably still the greatest jumper of all time.

  • @mlc2005 yeah it is embarassing to win Worlds after a short program like this. I am surprised she was even 5th in the Worlds. A double toe-double toe combo is from the 1960s maybe.

  • @mlc2005 she probably should have been 7th or 8th in the short which would have given the title overall to Ito. Watch the performances of Germans Patricia Neske and Evelynn Grossmann on tape. They were clearly better than this one. A double toe-double toe is simply not acceptable in the 90s. In face Lebedeva (4th in short), Neske (7th in short), Grossman (8th) were all much better too than Cook (ridiculous 3rd) and Sargent (6th in short). The judging was so pro North American here.

  • This music is what Kerrigan skated to in 94 for her Olympic short program. Who is the composer?

  • Hello, All. JILL TRENARY, demonstrating what a TRUE CHAMPION does, could have "quit" after doubling out of her triple toe. She not only continued, she did so with great energy SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING ALL OTHER REQUIRED ELEMENTS. Her form, positions, style and grace were so SUPERIOR to all the others. She then demonstrated DIGNITY waiting for marks & graciously accepting her flowers. JILL DESERVED THE WORLD TITLE. She is a CHAMPION BOTH ON AND OFF AN ICE SURFACE.

  • @mjcamck71 Anyhow, she is a damned beautiful woman too!!

  • @nedo88 - Good morning. Yes, you're absolutely right. "Beautiful" is definitely an adjective that describes Jill T. Best Wishes To You.

  • this is so skating birthday party corny!!

  • Actually, the layback was the BEST part of this performance, esp. to that music. Of course it wasn't as good as a Peggy Fleming or Dorothy Hamill layback, or a Lu Chen layback, but Jill had flair, definitely. But her double axel always, always looked very laboured; it always looked like she weighed a ton. But her triple sal was almost always top notch, esp. with the one-foot axel (though not at these championships).

  • This may seem apropos of nothing, but one thing that strikes me about this program from that day to this is the smoothness of the music edit between "Headed for the Future" and "Winter Games"--it's one of the absolute smoothest and most seamless segues I've ever heard in music editing for a figure skating program, which is remarkable considering the roughness of many skating music edits at that time.

  • Kira always had her hand between her legs during her layback. Hmmmm.

Jills layback sucked ass, as did the following skaters:

Michele Kwan, Rosalynn Sumners, Diana Poth, Maria Butryskaya, Tara Lipinski,

  • @metsdudenj Michelle Kwan's 2000-2005 layback was very good and innovative (the one she does with her arms behind her back). Kwan's layback was very good.

  • 2:37 should be a .5 deduction if you ask me :)

  • @kwadruple that was her wiggle from the 88 games, and it had no place in this program ugh

  • @metsdudenj It had no place in that progra, either!! ;)

  • As far a layback, no one back then had truly beautiful ones like say Angela Nikodinov(one of the best) but Jill had a nice one, not "HEDIOUS" as some think. And yes, Jill won Fair and SQUARE!!!!

  • Even though I agree with those of you who say her layback is ugly her speed and centre on it is excellent. Had she done her triple toe combo it is intersting to wonder where she would have placed in the short. I doubt first. Would she have been 2nd over Kristi who did a triple lutz combo? Either way even 3rd place in the short program would have basically wrapped it up for her before the free skate with less pressure. She then would have needed only 3rd in the free behind Ito and Kristi.

  • She was given 5th for this!?!? What a crime. I doubt this program would have even gotten 5th at juniors Worlds if the judges didnt her. A double toe-double toe for her combo, hahah! Also that layback spin should be a big deduction just for its hideousness. What about those ridiculous music cuts, did she just find a bunch of pieces and just slap them together. Ito was indeed robbed of gold that year even with her figures disaester, and this program is where the evidence lies.

  • midori should have been deducted for the novice spiral sequence and the hideous wrap on her jumps, and her layback position wasn't any better than jills, and although she doubled, the requirement back then was a combination consisting of two doubles or a triple and a double, so there wasn't anything they could deduct. (if you really wanna knit pick)...and her 10th place in figures was too high considering the huge mistakes she made. She was not robbed, she won the short and long.

  • YA.. if she were from Moscow you'd be all mad that she didn't get 1st place and you'd be blabbing about how superior her artistry was...hahahaha

  • Why would I have a vested interest in this. I am not from the U.S, nor am I from Japan, so emotionaly I dont give a damn who won this. I am Russian but I never said Lebedeva deserved it did I. Ito deserved the gold plain and simple. She kicked Jill's behind bigtime in both the short and long programs. Jill did not deserve 5th for this. Neske and Grossman both had better skates. Maybe a triple combo isnt required but it still should be marked way down if you dont do it.

  • don't forget.....this is from 1990. times have changed, and so has the difficulty and advancedness of figure skating. give her credit, I mean she is world champion.

  • Yeah she is World Champion from this year but why should I give her much credit for that when I and many others dont feel she should have been. Ito was the real winner this year. Jill's short program should have been lower then 5th and allowed Ito to come back and win. I am aware standards were different but people were not doing double-double combos in 1990. That was a pathetic combo even for 1990 standards.

  • Ito was, by far, the greatest skater in the field. The only thing that I feel Ito somewhat lacked was passion, and Jill had this. Although Ito was robbed during this world championships, I still think Jill was an amazing skater and she will always be remebered in the skating community.

  • agree (times ten)

  • Jill Trenary was the most controversial skater in history. (given to all the posts here)

  • the controversy wasn't Jill, it was about eliminating figures and what it would do to the sport...her coach predicted it would turn skating into flat chested compulory gymnastics, which it kind of has become.

  • I know, it just seems that she ignites such rage in some people. She just a lovely skater that did her best.

  • I dunno ask metsdudenj, hes the one that hates her so much, most people loved her, she was always a crowd favorite in champions on ice and shows, and was really an all around good skater, many felt she'd be a superstar...rule changes and bad timing always seemed to get the best of her.

  • I agree with you. I once heard her described as a "Carlo Fassi Masterpiece" and that is my feeling as well. There is a perfection about her skating.

  • she really was, she had all the qualities of a champion, but lacked consistency, and came at a time where they kept seeming to re-write the rules...NO one could outjump Midori, so they make it seem like Jill didn't deserve to win, despite figures only counting 20 percent.

  • A Question. Why are people always beating up on Jill Trenary? I thought she was lovely.

  • I am DISGUSTED that a double toe double toe was done by a world champion.... poor poor Midori... my heart goes out to her and the obvious FIX.

  • poor midori couldnt retrace a loop in her figures and cost herself the world title, there was no fix.

  • NBC showed a clip I think where she threw her skates in the thrash can after the figures were done, and I think the loop was the last figure. I was shocked to see that from Ito who seems one of the most polite and best mannered people. I guess the frusteration was too much for even her to contain at that moment.

  • missing the center of your loop as she did, was even a major error for her, I think the Japanese federation put way too much pressure on her, and it was easy for her to skate clean programs in the long given she always blew it in figures, when they got rid of figures the nerves took its toll on her freeskating.

  • 2toeloop 2toeloop shame

  • So Midori isn't intersting on the ice then, pishposh99 ?? She needs her jumps does she ? I think most people would say she is most interesting of all skaters, it's called "personality" - you should learn what that means. If you want good looks, watch Miss World. This is skating.

  • Well I'm definetly a Midori fan, nevertheless I cannot deny that Trenary, although a poor jumper overall has a grace and a beauty on the ice (not only due to her lucky good looks) which is not frequently matched by neither Midori nor many other skaters. She even adds a nice more mature femininity which other competitors, due to too young age, have often missed.

  • actually she was a very good jumper, just not consistent in competitions :(

  • ...and what about amazing step sequences, marvelous spins, unbelivable speed and just having fun on the ice? Midori was not only a jumper, she was a very complete skater, perhaps not the most beautiful skater but I think this has nothing to do with sport..

  • Midori was athletically superior, and I thought she was very creative and artistic, but she skated like a guy, and in some cases, even more a guy then the men...and it "hurt" her because they wanted a katarina witt out there.

  • I, for one, would take Jill over Midori anyday. Jill doesn't need jumps to make her interesting, she has fantastic style and is gorgeous to boot!

  • still more unbelivable that she won the title...

  • Wow! I've never seen this!! Thanks for posting. GREAT footwork sequence. Seeing her OP really shows that Jill is a complete and competent skater (despite the double on the 3toe...)

  • THANKS for posting this! I've always wanted to see it!!!
