  • aaaa, great song :D!

  • when i hear a morrissey/smith's song, i do not walk i run

  • their best kept secret.....great song.....

  • 12 seconds... "starved of muff" ???

  • @wardyboy26: Ahahaha, it's 'starved of mirth'- as in, she hasn't been entertained as much as she wishes she could be.

  • @Mareepu thanks for clearing that up. knew it couldn't be muff :o

  • Cuando muera quiero esta cancion en mi tumba.

  • }La voz De mozz hace q me ponga a llorar,es tan sutil,tan bella,tan conmovedoraa.....

  • I want to be Johnny Marr´s neighbour!!!

  • This charming song..

  • Esto es genio.Lo demas cobertura.Hipnotizante.Voy a llorar.Genio,si.

  • this song alone changed me as a person, before i was inpatient but the melody and Morrissey vocals in this are just entwined and flow so well, it made me fall in love with them and now i write poetry because of Morrissey :)

  • @Sonnysidee WOW

  • Such Beautiful melodies!

  • I'm starved of mirth.... let's go & trip a dwarf

...hangs down my all time favorite song

  • Cuánta belleza encierra esta canción. Gracias Mozz y cia.

  • mas buena esta cancion ☻

  • terribilmente ipnotica

  • this song is about someone i love very much,,and hate very much, hopeless and helpless ive have been, and would still run to her,,but she doesnt call..ever.

  • THE track that got me into the Smiths love affair that i've had since'83.

  • To all the fans who have never heard this, I believe it originally appeared as a B-side (B2) on the 1983 Rough Trade 12" (RTT 136) for This Charming Man.

Yes, this is song is hauntingly beautiful...

    A1: This Charming Man (Manchester)

    A2: This Charming Man (London)

    B1: Accept Yourself

    B2: Wonderful Woman

  • Poesia.

  • @Cerasciolta ΠΟΙΗΣΗ

  • I've never heard this one before...good stuff. Been a fan since the 80's!

  • I can imagine him wondering in '80s grey Manchester with Linder and feeling miserable

  • Thumbs up* If THE SMITHS make you feel so Good!!!!

  • well i wonder what other hidden gems I havent heard from the smiths, I wonder if they have a bunch of b-sides or whatever sides they have in storage. Its a torturing thought to have.

  • i've listened to the smiths since 1989 and this is the first time i've heard this song - 2011. nice.

  • that bridge ..that chorus

  • Such a powerful line. "When she calls me, I do not walk I run".

  • Who are those five assholes who don't like the song?

  • @mircko1989

You are very right. You must be an asshole to say you don't like this great song.

  • Yes I agree jx1992, it is hypnotizing this song ~ YHEA ~

I HOPE MORRISSEY RETURNS TO THIS STYLE OF ROCK BALADS ENFUSED

    WITH SOULFUL TEARDROPING SINGING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LONG LIVE MOZZAAAA! +

  • Still can't believe this band never wrote a bad song - I mean, most bands I love have at least a few duds but these guys are exceptional. Perfection personified.

  • Such a beautiful song until you read the lyrics. Oh, that Morrissey! **tsk, shaking head** What's to be done with him??

  • I know I'm going to get flamed for this but the guitar reminds me a little of no doubts version of its my life. But really it sounds nothing like it too. This song is a true masterpiece.

Btw how the hell did Johnny marr find the time to learn harmonica, Harmonium, piano, autoharp, amoung other things at such an early age?!

  • @GreenSLi7 Surely no doubt should remind you of The Smiths!?

Marr is a pure god like!!

  • siempre me encanto este tema d los primeros q escuche d smiths,

me gusta mas q what do you se in him

    saludos smithsianos

  • *LIVE*

  • Morriesy is just one of those lyricists and singers who just strikes a chord of emotion and truth to us all. Let him leave forever and one day get back with his old band mates.

  • How good can you get? This is absolute perfection, man i love The Smiths. <3

  • What to be done with her?...

  • Hey I used to look like Johnny Marrs on a good day. Except my face was more marred.

  • Too gorgeous, too sad, too perfect...

  • The wife tried to get me tickets to see Morrissey in Bradford.........She couldn't get through and all the tickets had gone in 25 minutes.......I'm so pissed off!

  • 'when she calls, i do not walk, i run.'

a perfect example of how morrissey uses repetition for the complete opposite effect, and still manages to portray his absolute genius. the man can't fail.

  • The Smiths had loads of great stuff that they tossed away on 12" B sides and the likes. This should have been on the first LP (as should This Night Has Opened My Eyes)

  • Probably my favorite the smiths song after Asleep and there is a light that never goes out.

  • i have a record with this song on it but with different lyrics and its called 'What do you see in him?'

  • harmonica is lovely. this song is the bees knees!

  • so haunting ... will always love the smiths.

  • i looooooooooooove this song so much <3

  • I'm f..ng speechless

I remember getting this album the first time!

I had been cming for a whole month the thrill of this lovely song!

    the Smiths were great!

MANCHESTER, LEEDS, LONDON MUSIC RULED back then! and still rules to me!

  • I wish I knew how Morrissey and Marr could look into the depths of our souls, drag the darkest of our memories out and rewrite it out into such a beautiful song.

  • the harmonica is actually so amazing...brings shivers down my spine

  • I just can't stop listening to this song! Beautiful! Marr's guitar and Morrissey's voice are the greatest combination since peanut butter and fuckin' chocolate!

  • amazing band of the century! =]

  • porque nunca la habia escuchado?? si los escucho desde 1987!1

  • along with 'hang in glove', this is my favourite smiths song. The narrator is obsessed with that woman and even though he knows that's she's a terrible person, he's like a zombie for her. every man knows how this feels like. someone has to be 100% homosexual no to know this!

  • @Akatosh86

What if the man is 100% homosexual and he's obsessed with another man and even though he knows that he's a terrible person, he's like a zombie for him? I think anybody can experience what this feels like :P

  • @YourPrivateStalker if it take it metaphorically, sure you can interpret it like that. but if you see symbolism and metaphors everywhere, you could goto the extremes of saying that this is a song about a pet dog attracted to his master in a sexual way. but if we interpret this more or less literally, this song is about a man being obsessed about a woman.

  • @Akatosh86

Yeah. I just thought that you said something like "someone has to be 100% homosexual no(t) to know this!" and I was disagreeing with that, that's all, but yeah I know what the song's about.

  • That's 'one of The Smiths finest moments'.

  • When of The Smiths finest moments. A haunting, luscious ballad of a song which never, ever fails to tug at the heart strings

  • this is so flabbergasting...i dont understand why these two genius IDIOTS cant see that everything they have done separately since the smiths ended has never reached such soaring melodious heights or intense emotional feeling.. Johnny, Moz, ur better together than apart. this song sez why <3

  • @PlaceOfOrigin thanks for the info. Yeah I really love the Smiths and it would of bugged me not knowing which cd it's from. Now I know the cd thing is out.

  • Which album is this song off of? I have never heard it before but really like it.

  • @kmo20101 B side to This Charming Man 12" single. It was never released on any album or compilation album. (There are others too) Thats how good The Smiths were. Can you think of another band who would do that.

  • LOL. wonderful song

  • A sweet song full of loneliness and emotion.

  • This song is made even better (if that's possible) As we've all known a wonderful woman

  • Wonderful Song.

  • Is this the rareist Smiths song? If not, which one is?

  • @toptonychick This one is very rare. It was recorded a few times in studio for the aborted Troy Tate sessions, a very good BBC Radio 1 session version and then this one.

BUT I think the rarest of all is maybe "What do you see in him?" - which is this song but with different lyrics (about jealousy). Ony one live recording of this - very rough, from a gig in late 1982 on kissmyshades channel.

And then there's the completely different 1st version of Barbarism begins at home on my channel.

  • @toptonychick

This is pretty rare, but since the release of "the sound of the smiths," I think it's less so.

I nabbed "Work is a four letter word" off _Sire's Winter Sampler 1986_, I can't even find a video of that on you tube, but there used to be. However I don't have a copy of "the Draize Train" or "Money Changes Everything," so maybe they;re more rare, even though they're here? I'll just say one of those is most rare.

  • @damienmetalwind

If something is on YouTube, its no longer rare. That opens a massive debate. Should something be allowed to remain rare? There are 2 sides to that argument......

  • Oh man, that Rickenbacker sound + Moz's haunting voice!

  • yes only johnny marr can make these sweet sounds

  • Reminds me of my youth. I miss those days.

  • great post, I ´m from south america so you can imagine as hard as I tried I couldn´t find this album or EP at the time it was out along with THIS CHARMING MAN!

maybe the greatest song by the smiths

    GREAT POST!

  • This is a fantastic tune. Not so sure about Morrissey's lyrics, though.

  • Estos temas de los Smiths me ponen sentimental y nostalgico :S

  • for me is even better than Reel Around The Fountain.

  • the harmonica sounds great... ya'll crazy

  • I Like the harmonica

  • me too..

  • the harmonica is so gash

  • but everything else is perfect

  • @mrshankly213

If the sun's rays that touch the fog under the golden gate bridge in the morning had a sound I think this harmonica would be it for me. It's haunting and I've personally always found it beautiful... to each his own though I suppose.

  • yeah, agreed ... the harmonica .. with all due respect, sounds like some kind of out of date transition intro for an after school special about the mentally handicapped.

  • my favorite of theirs

  • Man is theis song great... But then the harmonica begins.. Destroys everything for me. Will seek consolation in some other Smiths song.

  • i thought i have every single song of the smiths...now i am reading songs that saved your life and explored this song...brilliant track like every track by them

  • Its Fucking Crazy!!!.. How good this song is..Thanks toomuchpablo..I would have probably never heard this song otherwise..

  • How did this song not make it on any album? It could have been a hit single IMO

  • It's on The Sound Of The Smiths, cheers

  • I know what you mean. Ive only just found out about this songs existence, despite being a big Smiths fan for years. It's incredible!

  • @chileiceman

its good osng, but i dont think its smiths enough to be on an album =]

  • @chileiceman it did make it to an album but not an original smiths album,

its on the The Smiths Greatest Hits (Blue Version Album) .

I love this song dearly as well

  • what album is this?

it's bit different then version on Troy Tate Sessions

  • I don't think this track ever appeared on any of the original albums. I believe it was a B side on one of the original 12" singles. It might have been included on a later Smiths compilation album.

  • awesome ...

    takes the edge off.....

    the smiths are so unique...

  • How he has the wonderful ability to make lyrics both sad and hilarious.

  • I cant believe how good is this. It makes me turn so emotional and fills me with loneliness. Awesome Lyrics, an incredible guitar part, ive been trying to play this song, its imposible! and this guitar video is hard to follow.

When she calls me, I do not walk I run

Beauty is not enough to describe this

  • @jx1992

Watch the video by danielearwicker on youTube of this guitar part if you want to learn it.

  • @jx1992 Yeah I know it has this really euphoric edge to it.

  • one of the smiths best, cant belive its not well known

  • I'm starved of mirth.

  • fuckin love it

  • poetic beauty

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written..straight up.
