this song alone changed me as a person, before i was inpatient but the melody and Morrissey vocals in this are just entwined and flow so well, it made me fall in love with them and now i write poetry because of Morrissey :)
this song is about someone i love very much,,and hate very much, hopeless and helpless ive have been, and would still run to her,,but she doesnt call..ever.
To all the fans who have never heard this, I believe it originally appeared as a B-side (B2) on the 1983 Rough Trade 12" (RTT 136) for This Charming Man.
well i wonder what other hidden gems I havent heard from the smiths, I wonder if they have a bunch of b-sides or whatever sides they have in storage. Its a torturing thought to have.
Still can't believe this band never wrote a bad song - I mean, most bands I love have at least a few duds but these guys are exceptional. Perfection personified.
I know I'm going to get flamed for this but the guitar reminds me a little of no doubts version of its my life. But really it sounds nothing like it too. This song is a true masterpiece.
Btw how the hell did Johnny marr find the time to learn harmonica, Harmonium, piano, autoharp, amoung other things at such an early age?!
Morriesy is just one of those lyricists and singers who just strikes a chord of emotion and truth to us all. Let him leave forever and one day get back with his old band mates.
The wife tried to get me tickets to see Morrissey in Bradford.........She couldn't get through and all the tickets had gone in 25 minutes.......I'm so pissed off!
a perfect example of how morrissey uses repetition for the complete opposite effect, and still manages to portray his absolute genius. the man can't fail.
The Smiths had loads of great stuff that they tossed away on 12" B sides and the likes. This should have been on the first LP (as should This Night Has Opened My Eyes)
I wish I knew how Morrissey and Marr could look into the depths of our souls, drag the darkest of our memories out and rewrite it out into such a beautiful song.
I just can't stop listening to this song! Beautiful! Marr's guitar and Morrissey's voice are the greatest combination since peanut butter and fuckin' chocolate!
along with 'hang in glove', this is my favourite smiths song. The narrator is obsessed with that woman and even though he knows that's she's a terrible person, he's like a zombie for her. every man knows how this feels like. someone has to be 100% homosexual no to know this!
What if the man is 100% homosexual and he's obsessed with another man and even though he knows that he's a terrible person, he's like a zombie for him? I think anybody can experience what this feels like :P
@YourPrivateStalker if it take it metaphorically, sure you can interpret it like that. but if you see symbolism and metaphors everywhere, you could goto the extremes of saying that this is a song about a pet dog attracted to his master in a sexual way. but if we interpret this more or less literally, this song is about a man being obsessed about a woman.
Yeah. I just thought that you said something like "someone has to be 100% homosexual no(t) to know this!" and I was disagreeing with that, that's all, but yeah I know what the song's about.
this is so flabbergasting...i dont understand why these two genius IDIOTS cant see that everything they have done separately since the smiths ended has never reached such soaring melodious heights or intense emotional feeling.. Johnny, Moz, ur better together than apart. this song sez why <3
@PlaceOfOrigin thanks for the info. Yeah I really love the Smiths and it would of bugged me not knowing which cd it's from. Now I know the cd thing is out.
@kmo20101 B side to This Charming Man 12" single. It was never released on any album or compilation album. (There are others too) Thats how good The Smiths were. Can you think of another band who would do that.
@toptonychick This one is very rare. It was recorded a few times in studio for the aborted Troy Tate sessions, a very good BBC Radio 1 session version and then this one.
BUT I think the rarest of all is maybe "What do you see in him?" - which is this song but with different lyrics (about jealousy). Ony one live recording of this - very rough, from a gig in late 1982 on kissmyshades channel.
And then there's the completely different 1st version of Barbarism begins at home on my channel.
This is pretty rare, but since the release of "the sound of the smiths," I think it's less so.
I nabbed "Work is a four letter word" off _Sire's Winter Sampler 1986_, I can't even find a video of that on you tube, but there used to be. However I don't have a copy of "the Draize Train" or "Money Changes Everything," so maybe they;re more rare, even though they're here? I'll just say one of those is most rare.
If something is on YouTube, its no longer rare. That opens a massive debate. Should something be allowed to remain rare? There are 2 sides to that argument......
great post, I ´m from south america so you can imagine as hard as I tried I couldn´t find this album or EP at the time it was out along with THIS CHARMING MAN!
If the sun's rays that touch the fog under the golden gate bridge in the morning had a sound I think this harmonica would be it for me. It's haunting and I've personally always found it beautiful... to each his own though I suppose.
yeah, agreed ... the harmonica .. with all due respect, sounds like some kind of out of date transition intro for an after school special about the mentally handicapped.
i thought i have every single song of the smiths...now i am reading songs that saved your life and explored this song...brilliant track like every track by them
I don't think this track ever appeared on any of the original albums. I believe it was a B side on one of the original 12" singles. It might have been included on a later Smiths compilation album.
