the combat sistem is awsesome but it seems like more of a strategy game to me in a real rpg or a real battle you can't pause and you don't have time for making tactics in the middle of the battle ..
i take it the people complaining about the combat never played the Kotor games (also made by bioware), those games were fuckin awesome and this combat system seems pretty damn similar, with the exception of more thought being put into battles, looks good
WTH, this aint RPG..This is RTS with the option to walk the characters around...If you want to play a proper RPG go take a look at Gothic 2 and Risen.
@Brainiac83 There's quite a bit of difference from a action-based RPGs, and strategy-based RPGs. However, the fact remains that as long as you can build a character to your tastes, it is by definition an RPG. If using your brain isn't your cup of tea, then feel free to play mindless hack-slash like Oblivion (which I also enjoy), but don't bash on something you evidently have little experience with.
Well I know it's a good game but after playing it for 3 hours I'm done for good. There is way (WAY) too much conversation in this game. Ridiculous. It's more storytelling than playing. After the 2nd hour of gameplay I had to ESC out of every convo. Also, the Final Fantasy/pause style gameplay is not for everyone, definitely not for me. Just my 2cents.
If I wanted a game like Final Fantasy.. I would buy Final Fantasy.

@bugsniffer10 u dont have to pause to use a skill, but u can pause and choose were to mvoe and wich skills to use easier to egt up a tactic thats actually good, and not be not able thinking anything and run up to theme and trey to do osmethign there :)
I don't like the game. Fantasy stuff is not my kind of thing, I find it too gay but that's just my personal opinion and reading thousands of lines of text is also not my idea of strong gameplay...
How far into the game are you? I'm never just sitting there. I always have something to do. The AI is pretty intelligent thanks to the tactics system you can setup -- but they're still not smart enough to fully function by themselves and overcome tough encounters on higher difficulty levels.
Typically I'm taking control of a character and executing an attack for that scenario. Sometimes one character ends up taking a load of damage and I start popping potions. There's always something to do!
I dont like turned based games..i want to be able to swing the sword myself....it feels like im sitting back and have nothing to do while they fight.....i never knew this before i bought it...pity.

agreed, it's possible to have RPGs with visceral combat. Oblivion made a nice attempt at the real-time combat but I think dark messiah or mount and blade have the best combat systems i've seen... would be great to integrate those into an rpg.

What a waste of money. Point and click is all you do. I thought I could fully control the characters. Rent it and you'll know what I mean. Don't make the mistake of buying it to find this out later like I did. I got it for the xbox360.
When I bought it i was horrified by the pause feature but now I can no longer play world of warcraft since it lacks one. My point is, you'll hate it, then you'll get used to it, then you'll love it.
Yeah if you've ever played Bioware's Baldur's Gate games then you'll be used to the pause feature, which really is great when it comes to planning an attack and trying new things

Yeah, for you console nerds this game will probably be lame because it's using the PC pause system controls that was in Bioware's old titles like Baldur's Gate. At least Bioware stays true to their roots.

This video doesnt do the game justice, this looks boring. The tactical side is so great and so important when on into the game the fighting gets much harder and you can have 6+ enemies :P. Some of the moves your party do are wicked love this game i have it for pc and the graphics are awesome. :)
Ok I'm not agreeing or dissagreeing with any of you but for those of you who think this looks boring buy the console version its more fast pased than the computer version for those of you who like pause and play strategy play the computer version. There problem solved, want to know how? I bought the game for my 360tried it aand its awsome. So buy the game try it then you can say whatever you like with and educated opinion.

This video doesnt do it justice, fight sequences get much more complex than this, and "contolling every action yourself" becomes impossible when controlling 4 players. Dont like it? Dont buy it!! Yeah this looks pretty lame, im sure if you actually play it itd be pretty fast because youre getting into it, but you can tell that the animations are ridiculously slow, and i didnt see too much strategy. I guess if i bought it I would probably like it but no way theres too much highly anticipated games coming out and i can only imagine getting two if im lucky... KotOR is one of my favourite games, as well as Mass Effect, but I don't think I'm going to bother with this one. I'll wait until ME2; until that time, I'll be playing Morrowind, L4D2, and GTA4... That's an odd combo, eh?

Oh you are so wrong here. Its exactly fast paced twitch based gameplay which needs brain cells. You need aim, movement, precision and reaction speed to be good. In games like this you have no worry, you can just pause and think. The excitement of combat just goes out the window.
Combat should be done realtime and give players 100% control. Games are like a dynamic movie where you are the main character, but in games like these you are merely a spectator.

@zupa25 Role play is about deciding how will your character develop to progress in a story. Actions you take can either succeed or fail. So actually it is about tactics, i didn't say only in battle...
From what I heard on a view interviews, on Console, the game doesn't pause to pick your actions. Or, it only does it for the first move (Very much like KoToR). I'm not sure at all so dont quote me on this. I am, however, buying this later today.
Final fantasy is not the biggest fail in gameing history it's a staple in fact. You not liking something isn't grounds for saying stupid things. Final fantasy isn't supposed to be intense. it's a strategy game. Go play call of duty or some shit if you want intense.

Clicking an attack, then clicking on a monster, and just watching the game do the fighting for you isn't half as immersive and interesting as being there controlling every action yourself. I expected better from a title like this.
And Reviewers only reflect the mass-market, they claim that just about every expensive game is 'game of the year/decade/millenia/whatever', and that still depends on who is doing the review.

I still can't believe they took a wonderful game and made it into a Pause and Play...sorry but that's just stupid.
And the fact that the fan community of Bioware, the creator of DA:O, are either 14(who shouldnt even play it), or 46 and outdated, with a bitchy attitude to go with it.
Frankly, Bioware sucks at making games, and it seems like they have a solid following, and all newcomers decide to go to other game cause their games suck THAT badly.
im 17 and i wouldn't have the combat mechanics any other way ... it's something different than your everyday hack&slash where the only difficulty lies in your ability to push buttons fast. you actually have to think strategically for your fights and from what i've read in reviews, it's also very fun (which comes as no surprise for me)
I guess to clarify my comment: the reason why "action-oriented gamers" go for something that is more on the fly and intuitive is that it (insofar as a video game can) is more a reflection of athleticism than your "turn-based rts"-feel games where you just use your head and no reflexes. There's more gratification when you can couple good, reflexive marksmanship with sound tactics as opposed to the latter by itself while you watch a computer do the work for you.
I'll probably buy this game. But, I can't say I'm impressed with this combat. I prefer Mass Effect's combat system where you can choose to plan / give orders or just do things on the fly in realtime. This looks like a boring button click and watch animation fest.
But, either way like I said, I'll probably buy it because Bioware is the best game company in existence and this game's story will inevitably be good.
Oblivion is Oblivion and Dragon Age is Dragon Age. Bioware is well-known for that type of combat, the best RPGs from Bioware like Baldur's Gate used active pause as well. It's great since it makes battles fast-paced and looking good while being tactical and challenging. And Oblivion's sword-brandishing is just dull (it's a good game though).
right, oblivion is a good game, but it will never be remembered for its combat... Im still amazed by how many comments there are trying to compair Dragon age to oblivion. DAO was built around its turn/pause combat system - its a spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate. SO, if you never played Baldurs Gate, then although you still will enjoy Dragon AGe, you won't fully appreciate what its all about. Its really looking to be one hell of an epic game...
By the way, ive just read that the main game arc will take up to 60 hours, but will take 100-120 if you hit all the side quests, ect. Its a BIG game no matter how you look at it.

I loved Baldur's Gate, so chances are I'll love this too. I was worried it would be another hack and slash dungeon crawler where most of my time is spent smashing barrels looking for health potions. Diablo is fun, but I expect story driven immersion from Bioware, and it looks like they'll deliver yet again.
Game play looks brilliant! Wide variety of animations & knowing Bioware there will be so much loot my head will spin!! I love how realistic everything looks and just for once the challenge being brought back in a game. This is going to be an instant classic for all hardcore RPG fans out there!

well this game isn't for you then. It never was for you... you obviously have not played Baldurs Gate. I suppose you never payed any attention to the gameplay vids or even taken the time to read any of the many previews. Its a single player, team based tactical RPG. If you knew anything about the Baldurs Gate series, then I wouldnt need to break it down for you. If you want something like oblivion, then go try Risen.

Ok I'm not agreeing or dissagreeing with any of you but for those of you who think this looks boring buy the console version its more fast pased than the computer version for those of you who like pause and play strategy play the computer version. There problem solved, want to know how? I bought the game for my 360tried it aand its awsome. So buy the game try it then you can say whatever you like with and educated opinion.

k sry but this just ruined the game for me. The footage showed of them killing the dragon was 50x more awesome than this - but now its obvious that the rest of the game will be an utter borefest.
btw yes.. i CAN judge it right away - theres absolutly no way i'd find those kind of controls fun - Modern Warfare 2 ftw

Fuck you guyz!!! Combat system is awesome!!! Never even heard of the game before when i picked it up, and still love it!!! This video doesnt do it justice, fight sequences get much more complex than this, and "contolling every action yourself" becomes impossible when controlling 4 players. Dont like it? Dont buy it!! Im sure Bioware won't lose any sleep, plenty of people ARE buying it and will probly buy the next one

I really like that "pause" feature, I used it a lot in BG2 and NWN 1 and 2, good to know they are still using it in Dragon Age.

Yeah this looks pretty lame, im sure if you actually play it itd be pretty fast because youre getting into it, but you can tell that the animations are ridiculously slow, and i didnt see too much strategy. I guess if i bought it I would probably like it but no way theres too much highly anticipated games coming out and i can only imagine getting two if im lucky... Assassins Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 FTW, im gonna hate not playin Left 4 Dead 2 and Mass Effect 2.

KotOR is one of my favourite games, as well as Mass Effect, but I don't think I'm going to bother with this one. I'll wait until ME2; until that time, I'll be playing Morrowind, L4D2, and GTA4... That's an odd combo, eh?

Oh you are so wrong here. Its exactly fast paced twitch based gameplay which needs brain cells. You need aim, movement, precision and reaction speed to be good. In games like this you have no worry, you can just pause and think. The excitement of combat just goes out the window.
Combat should be done realtime and give players 100% control. Games are like a dynamic movie where you are the main character, but in games like these you are merely a spectator.

@Avean You need to know which tactics to use on different enemies in different situations.And i think that is what rpgs are about.Aim, movement, precision and reaction speed - with that you just named skills you need to play Counter-Strike lol :D

E.g you fight monster A which is weak to skill B all you do is click on skill B and use it on the monster
And there's a pause button, so there's no need (Exception for HAR HAR KORE GAMERS)

What do you mean by movement? You can use the mouse to click, in FPS you use the WASD to move, not the mouse it's entirely different

From what I heard on a view interviews, on Console, the game doesn't pause to pick your actions. Or, it only does it for the first move (Very much like KoToR). I'm not sure at all so dont quote me on this. I am, however, buying this later today.

I dont know what you guys are complaining about. You still have spells and abilities you can do that have cooldowns. The battle system seems kind of like World of Warcraft and that game was no flop.

had high hopes for this game, story and other mehanichs loked great but now i guess ill first try the demo... ot who knows maybe i get used to it like i kinda (:S) happened with the witcher. *though that one had way more action

Clicking an attack, then clicking on a monster, and just watching the game do the fighting for you isn't half as immersive and interesting as being there controlling every action yourself. I expected better from a title like this.
And Reviewers only reflect the mass-market, they claim that just about every expensive game is 'game of the year/decade/millenia/whatever', and that still depends on who is doing the review.

I still can't believe they took a wonderful game and made it into a Pause and Play...sorry but that's just stupid.
And the fact that the fan community of Bioware, the creator of DA:O, are either 14(who shouldnt even play it), or 46 and outdated, with a bitchy attitude to go with it.
Frankly, Bioware sucks at making games, and it seems like they have a solid following, and all newcomers decide to go to other game cause their games suck THAT badly.

im 17 and i wouldn't have the combat mechanics any other way ... it's something different than your everyday hack&slash where the only difficulty lies in your ability to push buttons fast. you actually have to think strategically for your fights and from what i've read in reviews, it's also very fun (which comes as no surprise for me)

I guess to clarify my comment: the reason why "action-oriented gamers" go for something that is more on the fly and intuitive is that it (insofar as a video game can) is more a reflection of athleticism than your "turn-based rts"-feel games where you just use your head and no reflexes. There's more gratification when you can couple good, reflexive marksmanship with sound tactics as opposed to the latter by itself while you watch a computer do the work for you.

I'll probably buy this game. But, I can't say I'm impressed with this combat. I prefer Mass Effect's combat system where you can choose to plan / give orders or just do things on the fly in realtime. This looks like a boring button click and watch animation fest.
But, either way like I said, I'll probably buy it because Bioware is the best game company in existence and this game's story will inevitably be good.

Oblivion is Oblivion and Dragon Age is Dragon Age. Bioware is well-known for that type of combat, the best RPGs from Bioware like Baldur's Gate used active pause as well. It's great since it makes battles fast-paced and looking good while being tactical and challenging. And Oblivion's sword-brandishing is just dull (it's a good game though).

right, oblivion is a good game, but it will never be remembered for its combat... Im still amazed by how many comments there are trying to compair Dragon age to oblivion. DAO was built around its turn/pause combat system - its a spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate. SO, if you never played Baldurs Gate, then although you still will enjoy Dragon AGe, you won't fully appreciate what its all about. Its really looking to be one hell of an epic game...

By the way, ive just read that the main game arc will take up to 60 hours, but will take 100-120 if you hit all the side quests, ect. Its a BIG game no matter how you look at it.

I loved Baldur's Gate, so chances are I'll love this too. I was worried it would be another hack and slash dungeon crawler where most of my time is spent smashing barrels looking for health potions. Diablo is fun, but I expect story driven immersion from Bioware, and it looks like they'll deliver yet again.

well this game isn't for you then. It never was for you... you obviously have not played Baldurs Gate. I suppose you never payed any attention to the gameplay vids or even taken the time to read any of the many previews. Its a single player, team based tactical RPG. If you knew anything about the Baldurs Gate series, then I wouldnt need to break it down for you. If you want something like oblivion, then go try Risen.

I went on to the DAO forums, and apparently all those newbies there are 'used' to this kind of gaming style...I say they have no taste in MMOs <.< Besides most of them inthere were complete fuckin jackasses who spent all their time complaining about me 'trolling' cause I asked why they used this kind of style.
