  • Is that Franz Nicolay on the piano?

  • @bushinarin yes.

  • if it didn't sound exactly like springsteen I could stomach it more easily, one springsteen is more than enough.

  • wow this fucking sucks

  • They may not look pretty but the sound that they have is such a breath of fresh air in a music industry that sounds all the same.

  • @TheSkaix i completely disagree

  • @wallowallowallowlife Ok.... They are all beautiful!!!!

  • @TheSkaix i meant, and i wonder if you knew, that i dont think they are a breath of fresh air.

  • awful, and that's coming from someone that loves indie rock

  • This band sucks. Sounds like he has a dick in his throat.

  • @MrBrobrabro You would know what a dick in your throat sounds like, i suppose, but I'm sure he didn't have that problem. Can you do me a favor, and have a nice day? Could you do that for me?

  • @OakRidgePunk777 How clever of you to turn that around on me and then finish with a Murderface quote. Well done. But the hold steady still suck, and you haven't proven me wrong by getting upset. And I will have a nice day, just for you!

  • @MrBrobrabro haha, I'm glad you're having a nice day, and I can not take your opinion away from you.

  • saw them live a week ago!

  • I'm seeing these guys tonight when they perform with Death Cab at Boise State! I'm so pumped!

  • good stuff

  • I love how in-your-face these lyrics are!!!!

  • @kingcrimson776 Go eat a bag of dicks.

  • @kurowa04 Hahaha, a bag of severed dicks. That way they get the protein!

  • awsome

  • that there is some damm fine geek rock

  • to anybody slamming this band, think about the fact that pure swill like justin beiber is also being released in the same year as the hold steady. be happy there are still bands that can play real instruments

  • Ug, like we need another wannabe indie Bruce Springsteen.

  • @KingCrimson776 go fuck yourself

  • @KingCrimson776 We sure, like, totally, actually, do!

  • @alphatyrone No, we, so, like, totally, actually don't,,,,,

  • @KingCrimson776 THis guy is right! and his login name is about one of the worlds most kick-ass bands King Crimson! Long live Robert Frip!!!!

  • I love the Hold Steady.

  • I LOVE THIS BAND!!!!

  • tight as a fish's arse

  • I kept expecting the pianist drive that piano off the stage.

  • How do they get that amazing tone from their guitars? ?>???

  • He sounds like David Thomas from Pere Ubu to me.

  • I'm a 90 year old man and i like this!

  • He reminds me of Bruce Springsteen

  • You have to Stay Positive when Stuck Between Stations. It's the First Night of a Constructive Summer, and the last thing we need is a Positive Rage. So ditch Your Little Hoodrat Friend, and make friends with Southern Girls like Hurricane J, and make sure to Ask Her For Adderall. Let the taste of Chips Ahoy and Citrus sink in, and let me tell you How A Resurrection Really Feels. By time I'm done with the Cattle And The Creeping Things, we'll be Sequestered In Memphis.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • @loosecranks101 Possibly the greatest review ever

  • singer almost reminds me of randy newman. solid band

  • I am going to be follow them from 8/24 to 9/2. Its 9 different spots, so if anyone is planning on going to the show it would be cool to know someone.

  • @jwashing100 I'm going to see them August 27th in St.Louis at Loufest. They seem like they'll be really good I just wish that they were headlining but i'm still so pumped to see them

  • like Thin Lizzy read a book. Fabulous.

  • The lead singer is what happens when Bruce Springsteen and a high school teacher have a kid.

  • @RDBeatnik hahahah and after the show craig will come over and fix your computer

  • @RDBeatnik perhaps that high school teachers brother is Randy Newman.

  • This is good music, period. From a guy who has been a musician and writer for over twenty years. This is the GOOD STUFF.

  • @clocktime11 man im from oz i love this band someone on you tube suggested i look at lifter puller and well its true man 20 years of awsum tracks and stories

  • I think this version is actually a little better than the one on the CD.

  • Comment removed

  • sal paradise was right

  • Craig really is a show man.

  • "boys and girls in america..." jack kerouac reference

  • @ryuVSbison This is really creepy. I just got back from a roadtrip with some friends that was inspired by kerouac's book "On the road" and we listened to this song when we left and when we returned, I literally just got back...

  • @DrPhineasFreeman Man, that's like some madman stuff! Like some sort of drifter fate! I dig it, haha.

  • LFTR PLLR

  • @northkato

    LFTR PLLR...Hellz Yes.

layin in the grass with the assless chaps...

  • i think it's their enthusiasm and energy that makes this bad so great

  • craig's voice is so much better live. i fucking love this band

  • I don't get where the myth of The Hold Steady being slated comes from. They're fairly widely accepted as awesome. Think it's just hipsters who don't like hearing 'yeah, I like them too' when they're talking about bands. Eeeeveryone loves The Hold Steady

  • Wow I have never seen what this band band looks likes but I've been grudgingly respecting some of their albums recently. I assumed the singer was a completely douchey and stereotypical Williamsburg hipster. Funny to see that he's just a regular dude. Anyway, their albums are really great spoken word with OK musical accompaniment. Them trying to rock out live on Letterman definitely doesn't show them in their best light. They are still pretty awesome.

  • @IaintEddy

Are you kidding? Rocking out is what they do best, see them live and you will understand.

  • jews can't be great frontmen.

  • @lordOFbrooklyn I guess you never heard of David Lee Roth? Steeley Dan? Lou Reed, All the Beastie Boys, Joey Ramone, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Warren Zevon, Lenny Kravitz, Bob Dlyan, Jacob Dylan, Geddy Lee and Neil Pert of Rush, Leslie West, Mark Bolan, Adam Duritz, Simon & Garfunkle..the list goes on and on...

  • @steviegnj most of those you mentioned are either pop stars, or not frontmen at all...the beastie boys? david lee roth? are you fucking crazy? bob dylan wasn't a frontman, he was a solo artist. i don't think you understood my comment. geddy lee is amazing, but he's not a frontman. neil pert is a great drummer but not a frontman...

  • @steviegnj

I think he meant mulato jews.

  • I LOVE his voice. It's like speak singing. It's awesome.

  • win. thats all i can say,

  • God this kicks ass!! I also thought of Springsteen,

but it was the piano and coda that made me think of that

Randy Newman vocals I hear. Nothing at all wrong with vox

this song, band kicks complete ass.

  • @heykyleinsf totaly agree great band ive bought there cds even checkin out lifter puller stuff just awsum

  • I don't care what anyone says I love his voice.

  • I have recorded on dvd The Hold Steady's full, amazing set that was shown on the red button at Glastonbury 2007 from the John Peel tent and I notice it isn't on youtube anywhere!!! Dunno if i can be botherd to put it on... Should I?

  • @TelescopeUK - Please do! I would appreciate it a hell of a lot.

  • 63 people have reached their destination safely :-(

  • Yeah the singing reminds me of The Boss a lot!

  • Blah blah blah! I'm on youtube and the music I like is the best for these reasons!

  • I've watched a few of these 'late night live' videos. Most of the time I end up really disappointed because bands I love often sound awful. Unlike said bands, I think it's fair to say that The Hold Steady absolutely killed it with this performance. Amazing.

  • This band has the Hogwarts seal of approval. Daniel Radcliffe (harry Potter) recently stated they're his favourite band, fair play.

  • Franz will be missed....

  • great show in Dallas at the Granada thi july

  • The indie scene has lost one of the greatest mustaches of its generation.

  • Excellent!!

  • Love this band. The singer makes me wonder if someone managed a genetic merging of Elvis Costello and Randy Newman and Bruce Springsteen...lol!

  • @Stratboy999 I don't know whether it's coincidence or truth that made us think of the same three voices.

  • @AutonomisticParadise Who knows, but it works damn well!

  • @Stratboy999 -Spot on :)

  • @Stratboy999 hahhaha ye man but there awsum

  • My god, this is brilliant.

  • @thedoctor69able I'm from Raleigh, North Carolina. Local radio here sucks. You'd never hear the Hold Steady on local radio here, so I feel your pain.

  • That was cool.

  • Damn dude...there are alot of haters leaving comments. This is my new favorite band. My first purchase was "Stay Positive", and a week later I went out and bought "Boys and Girls in America". This band rocks! Recognize, fools!

  • @dallasperry im from australia they only get played on jjj radio here i just lovem the most underated band on the planet a hook and story in every song

  • All the people slating this band need to stop looking for the next generic, catchy pop-hook and appreciate some of the best song writing of our time. He doesn't have the best voice in the world but it matches what he's trying to say perfectly. This is a band for people that understand and appreciate music.

  • @Shadowpl4y

This is a generic, catchy, pop-hooky kind of song though... for those who, as you put it, want to "understand and appreciate music", you might want to try Andrew Bird, The Mars Volta, Beck, The National, My Bloody Valentine, etc. Those are all original acts doing unique things.

The Hold Steady is a pretty good, fun, catchy band to listen to, and I dig them, but they aren't even close to being the God-heads you're making them out to be.

    Sorry, guy.

  • @nick4man3 I appreciate those artists you have listed (except My Bloody Valentine) but to judge The Hold Steady as a 'fun, catchy band' is very disrespectful. Granted, this song is one of their weaker 'mainstream' songs that they released as a single an hence they went for a sound that would appeal to the masses. If you listen to Almost Killed Me and Speration Sunday you would realise they are one of the most original acts out there with a very original concept.

  • @Shadowpl4y

I don't understand why you're trying to excuse your fandom for these guys. Why does it matter whether they're original or if they're just an indie pop band? Calling them a fun, catchy band is about as far away from being disrespectful as I could be, considering most music these days is neither.

  • @nick4man3

The mars volta is a total rip off of led zeppelin. They are far from original.

  • @mrd16140

    Hahaha.

Only people who don't know The Mars Volta's music say that.

  • @nick4man3 Haha totally agree!

  • @Shadowpl4y

but he does have a pretty fucking great voice

  • @Shadowpl4y UGH!!!!! you people that think you like music and are a true "music lover" just because you like a Certain band and other dont! i dont like this band at all does that mean i dont like music? that i have no taste in music??? we all have different tastes in music so stop judging people! music is for eveyone. and by judging people by what they like and dont like about bands means that you dont appreciate music and that you just like it because its "cool" SO JUST ENJOY YOUR MUSIC OK??!!

  • @downwithcheesecake shut the fuck up.

  • @Shadowpl4y to be honest i was about to turn the video off.. until he started singing. very cool unique voice.

  • @Shadowpl4y you talk about generic?? this sounds like Smashmouth with Aspergers.

  • @Shadowpl4y I haven't heard any hooks in so long I'd kill for one.

  • @Shadowpl4y Well said. I think he is an excellent vocalist, unique and emotive.

  • Why haven't America (or any other country) embraced this band yet???? They need more attention.

  • @120Vanquish120 i cant beleive how good this band is im from australia was wonderin how well known they are in the states just cant get sick of their albums

  • You sir, owe me one ending to this song.

  • his voice reminds me of tom morello, awesome music btw

  • I love the melody but imo, the lead singer's voice doesn't fit xD

  • anyone else absolutely lose their shit laughing at 2:12 when Super Mario starts singing, and he even has the high Mario voice??

  • wheres the hook?

  • @jakesmalldon Donny you're out of your element!

  • What's with all the bickering down there?!?! Like it or don't. Now: Volume back to 11 for me.

  • warning: if you like this band, don't bother with reading comments.

    dipshits and kids, mailnly.

  • Saw these in 2007 at Manchester Academy. Quality!

  • I miss Franz.

  • Saw this on a top ten list as #1 , never heard of this song so I checked it out , it's not even close to being the best song of this decade

  • @dothedew91 That's your opinion, dude. However, you are totally wrong.

  • this so good :D

  • I see a lot of Husker Du in their music... Damn good band !!! Proud that they're representin Brooklyn :-)

  • @Jammerkevin they're not from Brooklyn, even if they live there.... they are from Minn/StPaul

  • @Jammerkevin their pianist is definitely Mario's talented second cousin

  • rip offz

    theze jewz r fuckin sucky

  • @YouHaveBodyOdor learn how to spell your hate

  • @bethcarliseh Well, now that we know you are an obese, ugly, dyspeptic person, you must front the best band in the world!!!

  • @bethcarliseh In case you didn't get the sarcasm, you might want to take a Writing 101 class... that might help, maybe, possibly, hopefully

  • @6eeyore9 insecure of your writing?

  • @bethcarliseh didnt know music was about being a cutie

  • LOVE the kerouac reference

  • This band is going to save Rock!

  • Great stuff fellas!!!! Finnnnnnnner Roxx!

  • im from oz and just love these guys do they commercial airplay in the states there awsum

  • @thedoctor69able You're an idiot, congratulations.

  • @ohiosgreyghost your certificate in being a complete arsehole is fullyb registerd and on the way you walkin talkin piece of fuckin shit

  • @thedoctor69able I'm sorry, but can you please get back to me when your ability to construct a meaningful sentence has developed a little more substantially? Thanks in advance!

  • i love the songwriting

  • too bad i'm going to see these guys play in a bar wed nite:)

  • David Letterman looks underwhelmed that The Hold Steady are performing on his television programme! Impossible, surely?!

  • There like The Replacements for our times.

  • @ghost037 never thought of this. kinda true

  • @ghost037 Ummm, not quite even close, but very good...the Matts were amazing, these guys are really good.

  • I saw them perform in Athens, GA back in 2008. It was pretty amazing. :)

  • @cityofwalls where in Athens? please say the 40 Watt club, even though the acoustics suck

  • This sucks

  • I just don't understand this band. It's just some lame rock band with somebody's dad talking over the music.

  • @gdrugg2006 FUcking right eh!? This is pure inspiration for me. Because of how shitty this band is, I made a vow in blood that if I wasn't touring America, raking in money from loyal fans, and fucking mad groupies within a year, then I am slitting my throat and jumping out of a forty story building. If these guys can make it in music then anyone can. ANYONE!

  • @bethcarliseh sorry to hear your'e dead then, eh? Waste my time reading your shit

  • @6eeyore9 why the venom? Guess it doesn't matter if your immature ass has passed away either, but I wouldn't wish that on you.

  • sorry, absolutely terrible! Boring and .......just boring.

  • @delouaz i agREE!! what kind of music do YOU like?

  • @kfbueller

Sorry for the late answer ;)

Upps, iam a guy with an great taste!!, you know, from Fugazi, Nomeansno, Dinosaurjr, Sebadoh, Das Damen, danish stuff, german stuff, Jonathan, Go-betweens, Alice Donut, Andy White, I should stop now :) I could go on and on ;)

But,,,I am over 35, and quality nowadays are almost not existent, see lada gaga ;)

So, I have to adhere the past, or die..........

or listen to shit like Hold steady :)

  • Craig needs to lay off the fortified wine. :P

  • trying to copy elvis costello and the boss---it ain't workin

  • @iceaxe56 dude, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard about this band. Go back to listening to your hipster bands like OAR and Vampire Weekend. Springsteen still sucks.

  • @TBird4427 yeah like these guys are going to make it--same crowd as barenaked ladies-good they got a few male groupies who want to blow them tho

  • @TBird4427 I wouldn't call OAR a hipster band. Was going to see them at summerfest the other week....until I noticed the 15 y.o girl in front of me was wearing a Justin Beiber shirt. So I saw the Hold Steady instead, and there were many more hipsters there....but is that a bad thing???

  • @thombombb OAR isn't that much of a hipster band as alot of the other terrible bands, I was at Summerfest for the Hold Steady show. There were a couple hipsters from where I was at. I don't want this band to get anymore mainstream than it is now... There's always going to be hipsters at every kind of show, it's just that when a big record company sees that, they make the band make music to sell mainly to faceless hipsters, and thus you get the album contra by vampire weekend.

  • @TBird4427 actually i think contra was the product of the desire to target wannabe hipster high school students. Luckily we won't have to worry about that with THS...their lyrics have meaning, which naturally makes kids dislike it.

  • he looks and sounds like randy newman,,, a yougner version

  • i jus saw the hold steady at summer fest the other day......FakeFlourescentSkies and kanister666 the pianest name is Faans, he's like the greatest piano player that ever lived...this band is the #1 collage band this year...and its not a springsteen vib

  • @wooloo51 his name is Franz Nicolay. he's also an incredible accordionist and a really good guitarist as well. check out his earlier band, The World/Inferno Friendship Society.

  • Saw this shit at azkena in Spain and was the WORST TERRIBLE SHIT I have ever see, the singer is fucking idiot

  • saw these last night in Manchester - BEST CONCERT I HAVE EVER SEEN

  • Hmmmm...sounds like Springsteen circa. '75

  • Sorry. If you can't sing, you shouldn't be a singer. I love people with idiosyncratic voices like Dylan, Bowie, Costello, Cohen, and Waits, but they all can carry a tune. This guy literally cannot. I've seen him try and I know why he's adopted a style in which he doesn't bother. Unfortunately, most music isn't good enough without a melody. Too bad. The rest of the band sounds good.

  • @etsneroj Waits can "sing"? Not hearing it. i get him, but not hearing singing. Finn is quoted as saying to effect he tells a story and has a crack band play music to it.

  • @etsneroj He also sounds really sick and raspy. so that has something to do with it. I love how he phrases his lyrics. Really original .

  • @busstopratbag yeah, really fucking original to get drunk and talk over shity music like Bruce Springstein about girls that he dances with at bars.

  • Great song, great lyrics. Kind an obvious Springsteen vibe.

  • The singer's voice doesn't match him, but still awesome!
