How to Paint a House Exterior Preparation

Not everyday you see a house in such disrepair. Did you just find an abandoned house to film this video? just kidding. But as a painter from Toronto, I approve of your methods. Although one thought: unless you are a professional painter, I would not use a blow torch to strip and prep a house, try a heat gun first, its much safer. Happy painting!

I'm doing my house now and the paint comes off just fine with a scraper.You don't have to get it all off, just what's peeling, bubbling, and chipping.

Before all this, the first step should be to wash the house so you are not sanding dirt into the old paint. The new paint will not stick as well when the old paint is dirty. As for the blow torch, I don't think you need to be an "experienced professional" to do what he is doing. Just be careful and wear a respirator to eliminate the danger of lead-based paint.

@calidoggie When you sand paint, the dirt is the first thing removed whether you paint houses or cars. Then, primer is applied for adhesion. As for the torch, yes not only is an experienced professional required, but somebody with experience or training in how to safely use the torch, otherwise it is very easy to crack the glass since the flame is right next to the window pane. If the flame makes contact with the glass in the same spot for more than a 1-2 seconds, it will crack the glass.

@papaown He painted over the brown caulking, I doubt the anyone besides him will know what color the caulk was cause he painted over it. If nobody is gonna see it and it's done correctly, what difference does the color make?

NEVER USE A BLOW TORCH TO STRIP PAINT! MAJOR FIRE HAZARD! The fire can easily spread to inside the home. This is one of the most dangerous and worst things I have ever seen painters do.

@painterpoker It is important only an experienced professional do this. I've been removing paint for 22 years this way because it is the only way to remove built-up paint quickly and thoroughly. This is why my service is better than the average Joe the painter.

@payntingdotcom You are right. It does take an experienced painter to do this. 99% of the people should not try it. Lead paint fumes are also very damaging; I hope none of that paint was lead based.

@painterpoker No chance of that as the house was built long after lead paints were banned. Only on old homes would lead paint be a possibility.
