Stalin and Mao are clearly not examples for socialists to follow, and neither are Lenin, Trotsky, or Castro. Socialism doesn't mean a one part authoritarian state as supported by these people, Socilism means a democracy where the means of production are demcoratically controlled by the people, not by a prty that pretends to represent the people. The Left must abandon these dictators whose lack of Democracy and killing of millions(Stalin+Mao) completely misrepresents socialism.

NSDAP was the true enemy of socialism and communism as it is based on socialist and capitalist economy mixed together. Nazism also includes racism and nationalism which is the opposit of socialism. Probably state socialism is the only socialism you know. There are other forms of socialism which endorse self ownership and freedom. In fact freedom is impossible without a certain degree of equality (meaning equality of chances not of outcome).

Gov't programs almost always fail, they're always corrupted, they're always run by arbitrary systems, and careless bureaucrats. Even in wealthy western socialist leaning countries, there's wailing about the inefficiency of their systems, and the left's solution? MORE TAXES, more bureaucrats, less freedom, less individual choice. There's probably a happy medium, but I'd be happier with a lot less government, and society would function better with a lot less interference.

Very well, I suppose that lowers my level of disdain for you. However, you cannot "give" housing, food, or education to people and expect them to appreciate it. People appreciate things if they earn them. Certainly unions did help in raising wages to a fair level, but they got corrupt and even more greedy than the employers in the first place. The state sustaining people robs them of their independence. I would rather people starve to death on their own, than en masse when the gov't fails them.
