Bowiedavidziggy is not completely off mark, Kerrs otherwise fluent moves looks stodgy (compare to say One Step Closer @ Orense 04) Personally all the waving and smiling is a nuisance. As for the arrangement, there's nothing to complain about; albeit Kerrs voice is somewhat out of tune in places, and he has difficulty hitting the high notes. But the guy's 50 dammit.
Listen to Graffiti Soul and then you would not say such nonsense and spew such subject crap. Bowie would have killed for an album like Graffiti Soul when he was 50..heck when he was even 25. These guys were great till Once Upon a Time and then some of Good News was good, Cry was better, Black and White was better than Cry and Graffiti Soul is as good as NGD or Sparkle in the Rain! Talent is not bound by age. You outta have figured that one out a long time ago.
bowiedavidziggy are you mad man they were big late eighties and never stopped or broke up , i was there and the performance was betters than all bands now a days . They were playing stadiums in 89 not 82 your knowledge is embarrassing
This really is cringeworthy. Kerr and Burchill look like a couple of drunks at a wedding. COmpare this performance to the ORS 83 one also on this page - incomparable - some people have the grace to disappear without ruining the memories (eg Bowie) - others come back like Magazine and we ask ourselves why it took them so long. These guys once had the artistically credible world at their feet - once, ie. 1982. Stop embarrassing yourselves lads.
Personally I think the bass levels were too low in this concert - the bass is the key to the start of this song in my humble opinion. Derek Forbes' bass lines were genius!
I agree they've changed the dynamics of their earlier sound by replacing much of Mick's brilliant live keyboard sound with guitar parts and have moved the bass way in the background while trying to bring JK's n vocals more up front..... I saw them 10 or 12 times for 82-83 and personally I find the recent versions of their back catalog forced and uninspired almost as if going through the motions whereas their new stuff seems really tight.....
Great band always loved them...i was at that concert..shit hot i must say but then they always were.......support by Deacon Blue they were also great.
one word briliant . they played new gold dream like this in 2006 at the t on the fringe gig in edinburgh princes street gardens . i bit more dance orintated but it was good keep up the good work boys
I am one of Simple Minds biggest fans. I must say that the modern live appearances of the oldies have been pretty good. Except for New Gold Dream, I must admit. Although with a lovely voice still, Jim's voice for this song is weaker than it used to be, compared to the baritone almost tenor type of voice he used to have. Still it is nice to see them performing like energetic teenagers otherwise :)
maybe you meant tenor almost baritone!:) I was present at this concert and others recently, I think that youtube takes a lot away from this truly energetic live version, but yes more musically than in Jim's voice. In any case impossible not to dance and jump like hell!
in 1986 they where playing after Simply Red at the Amsterdamse bos , it was incredibly good to hear it was near our airport Schiphol and you could feel the vibrations of the plains flying so low but the sound was 60.000 watts rms / left and rightso we could not hear them haha. It was an amazing thing to be there.Jim Kerr was really good by voice but Charlie made an amazing mistake by the intro of New Gold Dream but he did the show perfect otherwise , he is one of my favorite players !!!!!
@jsara70 not so much he's loosing his voice but rather he is singing most of the songs much differently than he did in 1982-83..( thats what happens to singers as they get older ) Also the Bass and Keyboards were much more prominent in the the orginal NGD tour where as now they provide back ground filler to show case Charlie and JK . I
Hi OlixSM, thanks a lot for putting this on! Best quality video I have seen on YouTube so far. And a great idea to film from two different perspectives and to combine the footage.
May I ask with what kind of camera this was done?
NGD is my favourite SM-song, the live version is just superb, impossible to stay still while listening to it. I've seen this fantastic gig in London and I am looking forward to the tour next summer. And the show in Edinburgh! Best wishes
Looking forward to 5x5 at the ritz!!

BRILLIANT!!! They've done different versions of" New Gold Dream "Live before.
The Live version in 1985/86 sounded different to this.
This version is even better!
