The irish do NOT wear kilts. The irish kilt and tartans were devloped for ignorant americans claiming to be irish because of an obscure ancestor. The saffron coloured kilt was worn by the uslter scots in the royal irish regiment in the british army. The irish have never worn kilts historically and view the kilt as uniquely scottish.
Do some research before you show your ignorance in public.
i recommend you go on a crusade to get mcdonalds out of scotland if youre going to talk about intrusions on cultures. and dont wear pants, because with the exception of tartan trews, they were forced on the scots after culloden and all the kilt weraing highlanders were eitehr sent abroad or escaped. thats why americans and canadians wear kilts, the cultrue prospered there and died here. thats an arguable statement but holds alot of common sense.
We, in Breizh (Brittany) have 15 different tartans and proudly wear ou kilts! Next summer if you come to Lorient at the Interceltic festival you will see many kilted bretons happy to welcome their cousins from Wales Ireland and Scotland
Kilts have become popular with Welshmen in Wales, and in other places around the world, largely due to a resurgence in Welsh nationalism and a desire to connect with our Celtic roots.
Scotsmen all ! take it as a compliment if your Celtic cousins take to proudly wearing the Kilt/Cilt
the kilt is NOT celtic, the celts NEVER wore kilts. They were widely documented as wearing trousers. The kilt is the tradiational dress of the scottish gaels, developed in the 16th century. It is an important part of the scottish identity and it does not belong to the welsh or anyone else for that matter. The kilt us fuckall to do with "celtic" roots.
Well if we're gonna look at things your way we could say that the Haggis has nothing to do with Scotland. The haggis is frequently assumed to be Scottish in origin though there is little evidence for this, and food writer Alan Davidson states that the Ancient Romans were the first people known to have made products of the haggis type ! and lets not start on Bagpipes ! Fortunately unlike you, most Scots are happy that their culture is spreading.
What does haggis have to do with the scotttish kilt. Why dont you welsh get your own fucking culture instead of intruding on scotlands. I think its pathetic that the only way you can differentiate form the english is to dress up like scotsman. Why dont you go and dress up in a kimono or lederhosen. Make that up as part of your culture.
Mush1955, The kilt does not belong to anyone other than the scots. I am in the black watch and I have toured iraq twice. The kilt is part of our civilian and military scots culture. You have no right to intrude on MY culture. And for you information the scottish bagpipes ARE scottish. They are the great highland bagpipes that are uniquely scottish. I am awar bagpipes have existed for thousands of years in various locations however the scottish bagpipes ARE scottish.
All respect to you gaelicscots ! my point with the bagpipes was that as you said " bagpipes have existed for thousands of years in various locations " and the Scots adopted and improved them to the wonderful instrument they are now and made them their own. At the moment the " Brythonic " kilt IS a copy of the Scottish kilt, but hopefully in a few hundred years it will evolve into something that you Scots can accept. The way that the Anatolian bagpipe evolved into the great highland bagpipe
The Scottish people and their culture have become an inspiration to us " Brythonics ". Yes the Kilt belongs to the Scots, but do's that mean that Levis should only be worn by cowboys ? Some of my ancestors came from Scotland to work the coal, so just how much of a Scot do I have to be ? the Kilt is a highland dress so do's that mean that lowland Scots can't wear one ? do's one have to be born in Scotland to wear one ( like Hardeep Singh Kohli ) ? or will I need a DNA test first ?
Mush, There is no such thing as the lowland/highland divide anymore. the majojority of people in glasgow are from highland extraction who moved to glasgow during the industrial revalution. You dont not have to be scottish to wear the kilt no one is stopping you form weairng it. It is however uniquely scottish. I would also like to point out that the scots are not a race of people so a dna test would do you no good. The scots, welsh, english etc. are an ethnicity which is differant from race.
Just for your information the Celtic Kilt is a garment imported/ taken from the Vikings, the kjolt. So before you go totaly pompous check your history.
The concept of the Welsh philabeg has no established historical basis although the Welsh were originally related to the Picts..the Kilt as we know it today is half of the original Great Plaid which evolved from the Leoine Croich common to Gaelic Scotland and Ireland - it is this garment which may have been worn by the Welsh either brown, Saffron or red dependant on status. Highland clothing was banned after Culloden 1746 and it was ONLY associated with the martial culture of the Highland Scots.
...I've read that the "Highlands" originally extended down the whole western coast of Ireland. We know that highlanders from Scotland brought down thier culture and dress from Scotland.
The Celts themselves probably ENTERED Scotland from Ireland...
just take it as the Pan-Celtic garment of solidarity...if you have Celtic ties (and that takes in a whole lot more people than those of the Seven Celtic Nations) it's a good thing to wear the kilt. Good on everybody who does!
McAndy, Kilts originated in Scotland, and were recast as a pan-Celtic emblem in Ireland by Irish nationalists starting in the in the late 19th century. Welsh folks followed soon after.

Thanks for the insight. Didn't the Irish wear a mustard coloured skirt garment like a kilt? Apparently they put goose grease on it to make it water-proof.

The Celts themselves probably ENTERED Scotland from Ireland...

not so sure,
The Celts WERE indeed the peoples who evolved into the makers and designers of the kilt modern or otherwise...

just take it as the Pan-Celtic garment of solidarity...if you have Celtic ties (and that takes in a whole lot more people than those of the Seven Celtic Nations) it's a good thing to wear the kilt. Good on everybody who does!

McAndy, Kilts originated in Scotland, and were recast as a pan-Celtic emblem in Ireland by Irish nationalists starting in the in the late 19th century. Welsh folks followed soon after.

I'm Welsh, and I'm proud to wear mine. Kilts being only Scottish is a myth.

Don't take this the wrong way, but since when did the Welsh ever wear kilts. I thought it was only the Scots and Irish.

Thanks for the insight. Didn't the Irish wear a mustard coloured skirt garment like a kilt? Apparently they put goose grease on it to make it water-proof.
