@subarumonkey That's where things get messy. You're better off just talking about the actual diameter of the bullet. 7.62mm = .300" , but the actual bullets used are .308" and sometimes larger. The 7.5x55 swiss actually uses the .308" bullet.
@hiroyoshi86 I'd be surprised if he was using anything but gp11, it's surplus but every round is match, I shoot 500+ meters all day with gp11, and most k31 shooters I know use the same thing.
Its always surprised me that the Swiss army did not specify a receiver mounted rear apeture sight for the Schmidt-Rubin K31.. Especially considering the history and popularity of long range alpine shooting matches in Switzerland..
As good as the K31 is.. IMO, most rifleman would be more likely to score hits at 500+yds with an M1 Garand simply because of the superior sight picture offered by an apeture site.
Im truely amazed at how well you shoot w/ open sights at such long distances.
@rainmechanic Thank you, ive been at it a long time and it has become an obsession. Ironicaly, I cant read without glasses, go figure... Thanks again, Ernest.
Forgive my inacuracy, Prior to WWI the Kaiser was watching the Swiss troops on manuveres with the Swiss leader. The Swiss army was 1/2 the size of the German army, the Kaiser asked what would they do if Germany invaded since the odds were 2-1. The Swiss leader didn't miss a step, his frank reply was they would just shoot twice.
i thought switzerland wasnt invaded because its all mountains and mountains are easy to defend, and a nightmare to take over. Not to mention the entire country was a dense forest
@OKBushcraft You're correct. I've heard many times in youtube ignorant comments about Switzerland and its military, because they have not been in a conflict in over 300 years, does not mean that they are not good warriors/fighters. Whatever the menace the Swiss have faced througout their history, they have always remained undettered and fearless. All of their country is a fortress and a military garrison.
great shooting man, love the straight pull bolt on the k31, ive never had the oppertunity to try mine from anywhere near this distance,, but its nice to see it done
What's with the weird way you're working the bolt? Just open and close. You shouldn't need to keep bumping it like you are.. Both my K-31s load GP11 perfectly well and smoothly. Are you using reloads?
Yes, they are reloads, and when I reload I only resized the neck, leaving the shoulder tight, resulting in me having to "bump" the bolt for it to completely close.
Fully re-sized brass, or new bullets close perfectly each time, but I get better accuracy with one-fired brass.
Well done. Be sure to read Stephen Holbrook's "Target Switzerland: Armed Neutrality in WWII." You really gain perspective on how much the Swiss were relying on those little K31 rifles. They mobilized 1/3 of the country in, I believe it was, squads of 16 (with 15 rifles and one squad machine gun.) They held off the Germans and Italians to the south for the decade prior to WWII and throughout.
I'm shopping for bullets. What do you recommend. I'll be shooting out to 600 yards, but mostly out to 300yards. I'm thinking 168gr. Sierra Matchkings. Let me know what you think.
in the swiss army we have 300 metre ranges, which is about 900 yards. i have seen some guys shooting groups no bigger than 2.5 inches over and over on these ranges...with open sights.
I love the k11 and k36, but for long range accuracy you should look into the long guns. I know many people don't realize the accuracy because they aim high, the sights are set for the shortest range being 300 yds and at the top of the sights. My m96/11 is by far the most accurate rifle I own, I love my K31, but it doesn't stand up. All in all Swiss rifles are superior.
hey mag, about these rifles, does it matter what year i get or is it just the condition i am looking for, let me know please, i am into WW2 guns and wanted to know, also i have a Yugo m48A mauser, how does it stack up against the k31?
I'd have to diagree with the K31 being the most accurate ww2 service arm, since the Springfield was still in some use, I believe that it is more accurate, but the K31 is extremely accurate as well, and ur a great shot. Ive heard about the K31 legendary accuracy, but I didnt know it was this good, Id still have to go with the 1903 though, but then again u were using iron sights, as oposed to the flip up sights of the 1903, wish we had those long ranges over here in the midwest, but we dont
1 of 2 Thanks, I own both, and there is little comparison (in my opinion). Many others besides me have also considered the K31 the most accurate. Additionally, Ive spend moths attempting to get my 03 hitting an 18 inch plate at 1,000 yards, and that is with all sorts of various match ammunition.
2 of 2 Nether my 03 or my 03A3 have much consistency at that distance, while the K31 is like clockwork. Ive posted the 1,000 yard video shooting the K31 here on YouTube as well.
But it all falls to personal preference, and with that, I couldnt ever imagine parting with nether rifle... :-)
About ten years ago a friend made up several of them. It is great for long distance, less than about 350 yards 30.06 and similar size shots tear it up. Out past that, it works great.
1 of 4 This range, when I original made this clip, was supposed to be 640 yards, and a second range (when I say range I mean pre-measured point to point in the Mojave Desert) was supposed to measure 1,000 yards. I later found the supposed 1,000 yard range measured to a true distance of only 850 yards (Note: My video 850 yards with a 91/30 sniper)
2 of 4 I have manually measured 850, 900 and 1,000 yard points to the exact yard and these are used in my videos 900 yards with a 98K and 1,000 yards with an M1 Garand. Those distances are perfectly accurate. As with this distance, after learning that the supposed 1,000 yard was actually only 850, I tend to believe that this pre-measured distance is actually closer to only 590 yards.
3 of 4 The shooting day was roughly 110 degrees and using the original digital footage, determining the sound return from target, (total event time here runs about 2.1 to 2.1 second) Ive reached the conclusion that this is probably closer to only 590 yards and bullet velocity is closer to 2450.
4 of 4 As I mentioned earlier, I have easily hit 6 for 6 on a 48 inch plate at 1,000 yards, and I feel that I can achieve at least 3 out of 6 on the 18 inch plate at 1,000 under the proper conditions. Rather than remove this video, Im going to leave it posted until I attain a quality shot sequence at 1,000 yards, open sights, with this K31.
Yes, if you look under "Statistics & Data" on this video, then go to "recording date & location" I've entered exactly where I made the clip. I'll bet it is the same place you are talking about.

So how many K31's do you own, I just recently got into shooting open sights at 200+ yards. Now I cannot stop buying them!
What type of recoil pad are you using? A 60 round box of GP-11 usually sends me home with a nice bruise.
