I'm a beginner, too. Been playing every day for 2 months.
1) Get a $15, chromatic tuner off eBay.
2) Put the uke where you will see it every day, so you'll be reminded to pick it up. I keep one uke by the computers at work and at home. I have another in the car. Yes. In bumper to bumper traffic, I'm guilty of driving with my knees while I strum the uke.
6) Most importantly, have your uke tuned up by a uke/guitar luthier. I took my beginner uke to master luthier, Mike DeSilva of DeSilva Ukulele Company in the San Francisco area. In 1/2 an hour, he corrected bad intonation and made the fretboard much easier to play (called action).
7) Play lots of songs so you learn lots of chords. Your fingers will automatically remember how to find the chords.
