  • My brother in law got this on a cd in his ford ranger and we listen to this all the time

  • I love this song no matter what

  • From what I've read about the misadventures of youth exercised by members of that group, especially Conway Twitty, Uncle Charlie must have had the patience of Moses as well as a great ear for talent. It must have been a gas to visit his house as a kid. A truly fantastic American story. Thanks again Halbie.

  • Ronnie Hawkins still has the greatest rock & roll quote of all time. It cannot be beat.

"90% of the money I've ever made I spent on women, booze and drugs. The rest I just blew."

  • @29cherokee29 - Yup & he never paid back my Uncle Charlie Halbert from West Helena, Arkansas who helped out Ronnie Hawkins, Levon Helm & The Band before they hit it big with Dylan & went out on their own!

  • @halbie71 - I hope Uncle Charlie understood that when 90 cents of every dollar made is firmly budgeted to women, booze and drugs, it's tough to make what's left go very far. He didn't say women, booze, drugs and repaying Uncle Chaz or it wouldn't be nearly as funny as it is. I guess Robbie robbed all of the band guys so Uncle Charlie may have to blame it on that drunk red injun. (I'm 1/2 Mic Mac before anyone blows a gasket)

  • @halbie71 I just saw your prior post about the band practicing at his house. What a great story to have in the family. It must be a source of pride how well the music as withstood the test of time. wonderful story..thanks for passing it along.

  • @29cherokee29 - Thank you Cherokee, My Uncle also helped Elvis, Conway Twitty & many others!

  • Since I first discovered Larry Carlton playing drums on this Vid, and being a Carlton fan, I've watched several uploads of Carlton interviews and guitar lessons on Youtube. Despite being a guitarist, in his lessons, he teaches novice guitarists to pay significant attention to the drummer. In his interviews he describes one particular drummer as so outstanding that when he hears him play to anything, he hears more than simply the sound of drums & symbols, but a sound similar to playing notes.

  • 10 people are jealous of Ronnie's beard!!!

  • i really love the piano solo..wish it was longer..and where the hell is Robbie..don't tell me that's him

  • @mothulicka Robbiw screwed the other members financially

  • Best song, best feeling, best Movie : The Easy Rider

  • How come under artist here, it says "Carl Perkins"?

  • it's sad that Robbie never does anything "Band" related

    . Happy Birthday Garth!!!

  • i love Levon Helm...god bless him and all of u...peace

  • Levon Helm never got the recognition he deserved. Not only was he a GREAT fuc ing singer, but he was a very, very good actor. Check him out as Loretta Lynns father in "Coal Miners Daughter"....Also, if youve never seen "Ther Last Waltz", you are missing the GREATEST Rock n Roll movie ever. It was The Bands final concert on Thanksgiving night 1976. They invited all thier friends...Clapton, Neil Young, Joni,Muddy, Van the Man,Neil Diamond, Ronnie Hawkins and of course Bob Dylan.

  • Anybody notice that it's the late Rick Danko on bass? He died Dec. 30, 1999. Just missed the new millenium! Rest his troubled soul.

  • hey sorry to say paul butterfield is also past on

  • Rip Rick

  • I've never been a fan of multiple drummers....

  • what a shock... Robbie isn't playin.

  • @MardearribaStudio isn't better?

  • @maxxxx1972 yes, just an ironic remark. i'm not a RR's fan.

  • Is that Jackson Brown on the drums?

  • @JPD767075 his name is randy ciarlante (sp) he was part of the group 88-00 when the group ended when rick died.

  • @JPD767075 "Is that Jackson Brown on the drums?"

Nope. Unbelievably, it's actually Larry Carlton!!! No shit.

  • @yourtreat2 I was KIDDING!

  • Is that Chevy Chase on guitar??????????

  • @Gr4tefuldead ah ah ah ah great!

  • Garth Hudson is officially a keyboard/organ playing maniac. Playing two keyboards at once when one is behind him? How is he one of the least remembered members of The Band?

  • Thanks for posting this great old classic. The sheet music for the piano part for The Band's "The Weight" - which was played by Garth Hudson - can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.

  • 8 ppl need to take a load off!

  • i miss Robbie btw...R.I.P. bro

  • @SupRep not dead

  • @sromano07 im sorry he is....past away some years ago..addicted to age i heard

  • @SupRep He's not dead... He has an album coming out this year actually. Rick and Richard are dead, a lot of R's there but not Robbie

  • @jackbwise Rick Danko is dead??

  • @SupRep Yes, unfortunately. He died in December 1999 and Richard died in March 1986

  • @SupRep You miss Robbie? R.I.P.? What are you talking about? He's still alive...

  • @laylalaylady im sorry..my fault..1st: my english is bad 2nd. i ment paul butterfield. of course robbie isnt dead and that is great..levon is gettin' better... please forgive me i said robbie died..peace

  • Sweet !

  • Levon sounds great!

  • oh the m8's got old...lol..but they are still the best..peaaceeeee

  • Music don't get better this this!

  • Best song. thanks very much for sharing and posting it up.

  • Takes me back to my knucklehead chopper and the brothers I rode with in NorCal in the 60's...great band...THE band.

  • I love the way Rick Danko always sort of hopped around when he played. You could always tell he was into it.

And Levon Helm is just legendary. HUGE influence on my drumming.

  • the second set is for Ringo, he plays later in the show.

  • ringo plays the second drum set later in the show.

  • Why are there two drum sets?

I think that second drummer has a lot of potential for a good band.

Robbie Robertson kind of sounds like a fat guy.

  • @LavaEagle

ringo plays the second set later in the show.

  • @LavaEagle "I think that second drummer has a lot of potential for a good band."

ROFLMAO!!! If Larry Carlton knew what you said about his playing drums, he'd mention that he made his bones and still makes beautiful music with the best musicians, with his Gibson 335. He is "Mr. 335"

  • I probably would have jizzed my pants if I was there to see that live.

  • sounds great!

  • @drgreez after Rick and Levon, who are the other musicians?

  • The final version of The Band: OF COURSE, the Legendary Garth Hudson on Piano (normally their organist, and the best you'll ever hear...it's a shame that he needs introduction); Jim Weider on guitar (fine replacement musically for Robbie); Randy Ciarlante on drums (he sang some of Richard Manuel's parts in this version of The Band); and I'm assuming Richard Bell on organ (normally their pianist, and a great one at that; he died a couple of years ago of cancer).

  • Oh shit: Garth and Richard are at their usual places (Garth: organ, Richard: piano). Should have watched this all the way through FIRST. Sorry.

  • @kingscot who are that 8 shit damn crazy that disliked this masterpiece!

  • @kingscot there is also anoher pianist!!!

  • I seen the band a few times but the best i feel was at Rooselvelt stadium on 8/1/73 or 74 with the Dead Jerry's b'day and mine i'm sorry to all you deadheads but the band was so much better!!!R.i.P. Rick Denko and Richard Manuel.Denko and Levon were great in my opinion they both could sing and when Rick got into the base-guitar he rocked still listen to them all the time.love there version of when i paint my masterpiece.login off to listen to the best of the band now 16 great songs godbless them

  • nice version!

  • Best recording of The Weight.

  • 5 friggin stars baby !!!!!

  • This Is A Fucking Awesome Performance...

  • One of the greatest R&R Bands of All Time.....RIP Rick Danko...Levon is A National Treasure!!

  • HEY YOU AIN'T GONNA BELIEVE THIS... The 2nd drummer (see the close-up at

approximately (2 minutes 21 seconds) is LARRY CARLTON !!!! NO SHIT!!!!

If you don't know who Larry Carlton is, go back to sleep.

  • levon..awesome as usual..if you haven't seen one of his rambles in woodstock, do it... danko..goose bumps...you and richard are sorely missed...rest in peace boys...one of the greatest bands of all time...period, amen.. anyone that would argue, doesn't know much about music...

  • I said wait a minute chester. I'm a peaceful man. haha love this song.

  • Awesome song. Ol' Garth's wall of sound, is priceless. I read the comments and one thing I love about the band is each poster can admire a different musican, that's how damn good they were. I usually focus on Levon or Garth, but I take turns and sometime's Rick, gets props for singing it makes no difference, and sometime they play songs that only Richard can pull off. And while Robbie doesn't sing, he can sure play a mean guitar.

  • Awesome song. Ol' Garth's wall of sound, is priceless..

  • This was nothing less than amazing! Levon sounded awesome along with everyone else. Long live The Band!

  • Wow, Levon sounds amazing here!

  • Together with the late Richie Hayward of Little Feat, Levon Helm is amoung all time best drummers - and he can still sing like noone else... great great video !!!

  • Saw Lavon with Jimmy Weider and the Dirt Farmer entourage last year--so cool to see Jimmy, again, all these years later. Jim, keep doing it! I miss Rick!

  • this is as good a version of this song as the original cut. that bass is kickin i love it

  • I have known Levon Rick an Garth and Richard since 1980. You can search for me on facebook to see the sculptures i made for them. Levon has his in his studio on the fireplace mantle. kitrick short originals.

  • OK, Doc this ones for you......no heavy guitars here...."He aint heavy, he's my Brother"...Love you Brother Rustyt

  • Who says there is no Canadian culture?

  • Why do they need two drummers?

  • @lster123 The Greatful Dead Also Has 2 Drummers...1 Because One Plays Baground, One Plays Lead Like Lead Gutar And Like A BackRound Guitar..

  • @mkonjhg1 so did The Doobie Brothers

  • @daddyogrande So Does the Allman Brothers

  • Levon Helm, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, all from Arkansas. What amazing, super talents.

  • I love how in every version of this song the words are slightly different. They sing what they are feeling. The Band is truly the greatest group that we have ever seen. The name says it all. They are simply The Band. Levon Helm is an amazing talent. If you want to experience the power of his voice, watch The Right Stuff. They are amaizing and recognized, but I still don;t think they get their due. Ths is the greatest band ever. This is the one, and only, this is THE BAND.

  • @thisismyidgdi -EXACTLY.

  • @thisismyidgdi I totally agree with you on this. I love this song and this is my favourite version. what a song. WHAO.

  • This is one of the greatest songs ever written. It has a combination of so many types of music.

  • I think it took a while for the camera crew to realize that that the drummer is the singer, haha.

  • beste lied der welt!

  • RIP Rick and Richard

  • Nice easy groove pocket.

  • There may have been better singers than Levon Helm, but there has never been a better voice. Wow!!

  • Robbie isnt dead!

  • världens bästa låt. punkt!

  • bland dom bästa helt klart

  • wheres robbie?

  • r.i.p robbie

  • You do know that Robbie screwed these guys out of their royalties??? This was a re-group of 3 of them...at this time Richard Manuel was already gone and I would hope RR was not invited. I honestly think that The Band was the best rock'n'roll band to ever hit a stage!

  • pensate che nn hanno avuto un gran successo, maledetta musica, alcune volte sa essere veramente cattiva con alcuni grandi cm loro

  • This is a great performance.

  • Randy Ciarlante sure has a sweet sound in this video.

  • How did I miss this video. OMG the new year is looking better now.

  • Top tune

  • Classic! thanks

  • Massey Hall has the best acoustics in the world

  • priceless!

  • Damn! Great post Sober!!

  • The Band used to practice at my Uncle's home in West Helena, Arkansas. He is mentioned in Levon's book "This Wheel Is On Fire"

  • Shows how much of an ass Robbie Robertson really is. Still no appearance from the one guy that should have been kissing Ronnie and rest of the bands ass for letting him play with them.. (Richard Manuel was the only reason he was ever allowed in the hawks!!!

  • @Chefdeangolf he wrote this song. without him The Band would never be as famous as they are. so relax on the anti robertson talk. helm and robertson were both brilliant in their time.

  • @helmet959 is a good songwriter but one of the worst guitar player dude!!!!!

  • @helmet959

Get over yourself bud. We are entitled to our opinions. Kinda creepy you are going through comments made over a year ago. Welcome to 2010. Wake up you might miss 2011.

  • @Chefdeangolf well i'm just getting into The Band. so i'll reply whenever i want, thanks though. from what I can tell, people including yourself, are overly critical of Robertson. just my opinion. and i also don't think he's that bad of a guitarist either. he's definitely not a natural, God-given talent like Clapton, but he's "good". i'm a songwriter in a band and i also have below average lead guitar playing skills which i'm trying to improve, so i can relate to Robertson.

  • Levon Helm is brilliant!

  • They really were THE band!

    R.I.P RICK DANKO

  • sing this real good . wot year is it ?

  • 1995

  • :P AWESOME!!! I KNOW HOW TO PLAY THIS ON GUITAR! if you want to know too then send me a message and ill send you the notes ;) you really should know to play this cause its like so awesome :D

  • love this a lot. anyway, is mr helm having a cold or something? oh, who cares, his voice is a treasure anyway.

  • Levon's voice has been pretty much gone since he won his battle with throat cancer a few years ago. Sad, what a treasure.

  • it does kinda sound like he has a cold but it kind of gives it a nice touch. levon is great!

  • The most under rat5ed band in the world ever!!!

  • One of the best songs ever...

  • Jimmy Weider is the guy playin the tele.

  • Garth looks bad ass with that hat. Great performance!

  • who's the other drummer?

  • Levon Helm

  • no the guy at 2:22

  • Randy Ciarlante, he was brought in so that when Levon would play Mandolin or Bass, he would provide drums (Richard Bell, who is on piano, played just keys and accordion).

  • Yes that's Andy Fairweather. You've seen him on tour with Clapton and Roger Waters, among others.

  • It's that Andy Fair-Weather Low with the yellow tele?

  • Ow, great music , great memories,

    THANKS !

  • how amazing is garth hudson!!! dam hes good

  • Awesome video! Thank you SO MUCH for posting it and for ALSO having the volume where I could crank it WAY UP!!!

    *smiles*

  • Whats the bass players name ???? He,s Incredible

  • Rick Danko.

    He was amazing...R.I.P.

  • @victorgriffen God damn it this makes me sad.

  • HEY SOUNDS AWESOME and this what I keep coming back too

  • As long as Levon is the one singing, this song will always sound great, even if Robbie and Rich weren't there :(

Although, man, you could really see that Ricky was not in good shape. Poor guy could barely hit the notes.

Both he and Rich will be missed.

  • awesome ;)

  • the band-staple singers-pop staples-rick danko-last waltz- all you need.

  • never get sick of this or any other version of this song. simply awesome!!!!!

  • 3:47 that is where it gets fun!

  • Bliss!

  • this band should've toured if rick hadn't died. I recognize that other drummer from a documentary on the band.

  • That's just silly good...

  • Youre right. I thought the dude with the hat was Ronnie. I didnt know that Ronnie played keyboards. I guess he doesnt after all. Thanks.

  • The most influential bunch of snowbacks without a doubt. Not much of a Band here. No Garth or Richard or Robbie. Too bad.

  • Garth IS there. Richard had a good excuse for not being there. Robbie...well, let's not go there.

    ;-)

    Cheers.

  • Richard was dead when this happend right?

  • yes. That's what I meant by a "good excuse".

    :-)

  • levon still sounds great

  • Levon is cool. I like his drumming style He's got class.

  • Great song!!

  • I love these old men! I loved the young ones too.

  • Nobody ever came close to them; nobody ever will. On their worst day, they're better than the crap that's out today!

  • This is bloody great, and disproves the theory that if you can remember the 60's then you weren't there.I do and I was there.Totally awesome.

  • wow. this is possibly one of their best performances of the weight. my fav. awesome

  • Wow, this is great. Levon can still sing almost as good as he used to. Much better than the one with robbie singing.

  • THESE ARE TRUE MUSCICIANS !!!!!!!!!

  • great great great great song.

  • Levon sounds awesome

  • And I do believe this is after he had vocal chord cancer and was told he would never speak or sing again :D

  • these guys are awesome! the kids in rock n roll today haave ZERO talent! just look at the band and the young rockers today...there's NO COMPARISON AT ALL !

  • i dont know how to agree with you... you are so right, man. wow. but still, all the inspiration of the 60s and 70s has slowly dissipated...

  • Thanks for positing, this is a classic, even without Rich.

  • CAn i say that is a super song ? Neh, that would be an understatement.

  • Thanks for posting this! Danko lived some years in Norway at the end, met him a couple of times

  • yeyeyye!
