Wild Honey is really such an underrated album, it really gets overlooked somewhere between the gaga over Pet Sounds and the anticipation of Smile around the same time period.
@badskroy71 Totally agree, it's forgotten but it's another gem. Maybe a bit short of an LP but because of this there is a huge ratio of great tracks to average ones.
The "What would I do without her tell me now" at 1:30 gives me chills, that haunting voice. Meeting is ex and daughters Carny and Wendy on shuttle bus at San Fran airport and getting to talk music with Carny was one of my high points.
Strangely hypnotizing song. I can't lie on this one but as much as I dislike Mike his singing here is what makes the song for me...along with those great dizzying background harmonies
@jwild611 Mike was an awesome singer but just a complete piece of shit as a human being. At least he had that one redeeming quality...the whole band god, just listen to those harmonies even on a song like this. Nobody was every as good as them.
i got this double album with Wild Honey/Carl and the Passions, this one and some other underrated songs...part of the problem for many of you who discovered this song late is that these albums were out of prints so long
It's amazing! I also saw that BS movie by john stamos and the most memorable part of the whole movie was when brian burned the smile album and then began playing that beautiful intoxicating piano riff. I also just found out today what the "Real song" is that I have waited a decade for....it's pure heaven!
barrtarr, I had about the same exact experience as you. Saw it about a decade ago, and the most memorable part was Brian sitting down at the piano and playing this song. Since that time I couldn't find it for the life of me, but today I finally did.
Ages ago I watched an awful t.v movie on the beach boys but then this song comes on when Brian is pretty much out of his mind from the breakdown. He's at the piano and his wife's screaming at him or crying or something because he's just sitting there playing that riff over and over again. That was about a decade ago and I have been trying to find what song it was ever since, got it tonight. It really blew me away. Thought it was the best thing I'd ever heard. Best piano chords ever.
Brian and Mike both wrote the song, although it's been said that, surprisingly, Mike wrote quite a bit of this song himself - not Brian as had commonly been thought before. A great song either way.
This was the first of Brian's great waltzes. Over the following year, there would be lot's more ("Friends," "Be Here In The Morning," "Time To Get Alone," "I Went To Sleep" etc).
@IDLERACER Thanks for pointing that out about the waltzes. I never thought of it that way, hadn't noticed that. Right, all of those in 3/4 time. What great stuff.
@sabrinasjourney What a super comment. I think it's Brian's ingenious bassline that gives that sinking feeling (in a good way). What a tremendous song.
Why has it taken me so long to discover this gem? This rates as one of my favourites. the contrasts are stunning, and the vocal makes the hairs stand on end. We love Brian, a true legend and genius.
amazing record... by far my favorite cause of is rareness. I found it on vinyl at the local goodwill for $1and my heart jumped out of my chest. now I need to some how get it on my i pod so I can rock it in my car.
@spadge999 Your comment shows up as 2 years ago, but I just HAD to post back to you. Hairs standing on end is all we ever did with all of Brian Wilson's stuff! You spelled favorites with a "u," so I'm thinking you're from UK. John Lennon once said that Brian was a true genius. Coming from one, I believe that's the truth! If that made your "hairs stand up," try Warmth of the Sun...or any of the CAR songs....which makes MY hairs stand up! Little Deuce Coupe, 409, Shut Down etc..... Enjoy!

great stuff here, except a few silly songs that M. Love had to screw up...

I always thought this album production style influenced the Beatles White Album. The "big" productions were over.

Hauntingly beautiful song, well constructed with complex chord changes. Wild Honey is truly up there with the finest Beach Boys albums.

I love the cool hissing noise @ 2.11!! I always thought it must have been a nod to the Beatles' song 'Girl' on Rubber Soul who use a similar noise.
