When you proliferate you choose what gains counters. He wouldn't have bumped you up to 3, although not playing the mimic vat and bumping you up to 3 might have been a good play if he wasn't so far behind because it skips you over 2.
@LastSasquatch: I was thinking that he wanted to save his two 2-casting cost artifacts but then realised that he played his Mimic Vat. But then someone on MTGOVideos pointed out that having mana to activate Mimic Vat was clearly a better play.

The deck is probably the best in the format but it's also way too expensive for my wallet...
