I'm English. My parents live in Scotland. My brother and sisters in Wales, I love Scotland/England and Wales and would most likely love the U.S. too if I got the chance to visit. I read in his bio that his family comes from Skye and some of his relatives emigrated to Nebraska. i am a third generation Munro from Nebraska, and the only Munro line in the state which goes back to the 1900's. The union is not useful, there are many benefits including our status within the European Union.
Whilst people may like to pretend that all EU countries are equal no matter their size this is not the case. Look at how Ireland was bullied into voting for the Lisbon treaty after rejecting it the first time.
Had Britain (one of the EU3) said no to lisbon it would be dead, but because Ireland is a small nation it was ignored and told to vote again (as theyve done before as well)

The situation with Ireland and the lisbon treaty proves that smaller countries in the EU are not treated as equals. Ireland voted no to the lisbon treaty, they were then bullied into voting yes with threats and pressure from the EU. (not the first time Irelands said no then got forced to change their mind).
The UK Is one of the main contributors to the EU budget and 3rd bigggest EU economy giving us influence. We get many opt outs smaller nations do not manage to secure.

An independent Scotland would join the euro, which puts it in a difficult position like Greece who lack some of the tools to deal with their problems (cant set their own interest rates).
Scotland is 10% of the UK economy, Its about 1% of the Eurozone. Scotlands economy is and always will be tied more to England than to Spain or Italy. There for Scotland would be weaker in the eurozone with the European Central Bank controlling monetary policy rather than the Bank of England (founded by a Scot)

Scotland would make up just 1% of the Eurozone, it would be about 2% of the EUs landmass and its position would be 1% of the EUs.
Scotland and Englands economies are closely tied not just because we are a United Kingdom but because we are part of a small island. It is simply obvious Scotland matters more to the UK than it would to the European Union
