It's not even so much individuals that are "bought & paid for", but much more that they are controlled through their education and what they believe (atheism and new age/David Ickeism :P included). That way, you only have to control which books they are taught in the schools through the education departments. But there are other ways to control books/ideas as well.

From a historical and sociological standpoint, I would have to disagree with dajuhan2u. Social engineering is a complete success. Afterall you only have to compare the reaction to a person being gay in the 80's to a person being gay now. In the 80's most people would have been shouting "Kick his/her ass!" Now it's considered wrong. Had the people been left alone, it would still be like the 80's. The public education system is the best example of the point. Just look up ritalin sometime.
