Dudes, I have a better idea. Have both and become agile and versatile. I have to admit than Mac is better for musicians cause of the Hardware optimization but windows are more user-friendly for everyday activity. Considering servers I vote for Linux!

@richcummings333 garage band is just a free piece of software that comes free when you buy a mac. its their professional grade softeare such as Logic pro or Final Cut Pro that's industry standard. i have worked extensively with both audio and video on mac and pc, and i can tell you from a lot of experience macs win hands down for this particular application. my opinion is completely unbiased as i use both mac and pc on a regular basis.

I think that mac is for people who do lots of multimeda like writing music and making videos/editing. Windows is for people who want to get work done. My brother has a mac and he's always playing on it or something and he usually can't get any work done while I have a PC and get a ton of work done

Mac os x is more pleasant to use for basic tasks like web browsing and compiling documents. The ginger gestures, for example, make it a breeze to use. This is from my limited experience of using my dad's mac.

1. Kernel
Microsoft Windows used the FreeBSD TCP/IP stack from Windows 2000 (and ME) upwards until Windows Vista. They also borrowed plenty of code for making the POSIX subsystem in the NT kernel.
Windows spawned the dire need for home users to have a firewall by binding server-related services to all network adapters by default; making those with simple login passwords vulnerable to remote attacks out-of-the-box on Windows 2000/XP/2003.
Windows also was vulnerable to rootkits by default by not enforcing all kernel modules (drivers) were signed. This is what also led to games companies bundling invasive DRM (they did because they could without an issue!).
Amost all Windows drivers on the average system which reside in the kernel were NOT written by Microsoft. This means far more 3rd-party code is in the kernel than with Mac OS X. This means one can't go by an audit of the Windows kernel code itself for security, one would need to audit drivers too.
This affects the ability for the system as a whole to be security certified formally, unless the hardware and drivers are taken into account too.

Your point about the kernel is a matter of opinion. Some would argue that a kernel developed in a community is the best way to develop said kernel instead of one company sitting with all the work.
I have to say... as a Solaris/Linux administrator who uses Linux as my main desktop... I have to say, your demonstration of how much Linux and Solaris both Apple and MS use just makes me think I'm in the right place!... do people understand the the linux software used or borrowed (however you wish to see it) isnt under any sort of license. its free game, that allows you to build an operating system. what apple has done with this "borrow software" is developed it and refined the code into something more useable. you have to admit a lot of linux distros and software are unfinished and no polish. at least apple has seen all these great user tweaks and addons to make the experience of a computer better.
in practice, mac OSX Snow leopard probes to be a fast, efficient and stable OS. als OSX SL 64-bit has efficiently and effectively schrunken to 5GB from its OSX 10.5 predecessor (12GB), whereas win7 64bit is 20GB! ok, there's a lot less freezes and crashes as compared to previous versions of windows, but now there's some huge compatibility issues (where even XP mode isnt working), also alot of programs fail to install, common issues. OSX fail rate is as close to 0 as can be
1. Do you really think Apple hosts it's website itself?
2. Who would run a Mac, only as a webserver
3. What does it matter, that Microsoft and Apple both use Windows for their webserver?

My conclusion: go watch some "Why Macs are better" videos, and try a Mac out at an Apple store, you'll know Mac's are better, even if that means they're pricier.

I don't hate Macs, like them actually. The GUI is pretty sleek and smooth even on their cheapest models, compared to Windows which can be very sluggish on crappy systems.
But, what I hate is, the "Mac Fanboys", the unreasonable price range, and Apple itself.

Interesting points, although, when you use the OS, which of those facts even matter? I believe most people learn how to hack from a pc rather than a mac, so you would be most vulnerable on a pc than a mac. I don't need directX because I own an xbox, thus my gaming is covered.

@mecanos28 this is supposedly the case, however, I can run thousands of advanced media editing programs on my Windows. It's not my job, so I cant really judge but Photoshop works on Mac and Windows. Theres so much software for windows. It seems, in the eyes of someone who does only low-end media editing, that they are equal on this front.

FreeBSD is open source, while Macs are possibly the most expensive computers I know of.
You could buy an Xserve for $500 more than annual support on a server using Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5 Advanced!
Unless I had to use Red Hat, I would build a computer for $800, install FreeBSD, and do complicated setup until my server works. BOOM, there's the page that says "It works!"
A Mac is able to do everything I need without issue: music, pictures, games (i.e. The Sims 3), word processing, spreadsheets, VIRTUALIZATION, and last but not least, e-mail and web browsing. For the average user, a Mac will work. Only in platform-specific applications is any one operating system necessary. (I could switch to Linux right now without any issues.)

Apple does a great job at robbing the Open Source community, 95% of there OS is made up by open source components, the 5% which apple may have written is closed source and PATENTED....

2. DirectX vs OpenGL
* The Wii and PS3 both use OpenGL.
* ID Software uses OpenGL exclusively for all their games (think newer DOOM games, Quake series etc.)
* Prior to DirectX 8.x, most games for Windows came with SW Rendering, 3DFX, OpenGL and Direct3D options - often with OpenGL being most mature
* WebGL anyone? There won't be a WebD3D, as D3D is too closely tied to Windows.
Overall, one can't say D3D is better than OpenGL. It is just more focused on one platform than OGL is

Amost all Windows drivers on the average system which reside in the kernel were NOT written by Microsoft. This means far more 3rd-party code is in the kernel than with Mac OS X. This means one can't go by an audit of the Windows kernel code itself for security, one would need to audit drivers too.
This affects the ability for the system as a whole to be security certified formally, unless the hardware and drivers are taken into account too.

Some reasons why Mac OS X is not a superior OS:
- Must be ran on Apple Hardware (legal reasons)
- Does not include commercial-use patent coverage for codecs
(a lot of "professionals" are breaking the law here)
- Desktop variants of OS X cannot be virtualized legally
- Lacks fully-featured parental controls (even Linux distros have this)
- Lacks a completely stable userland ABI (even RHEL/SLES has this)
- Lack of hardware support, supports even less than FreeBSD

Your point about the kernel is a matter of opinion. Some would argue that a kernel developed in a community is the best way to develop said kernel instead of one company sitting with all the work.

I have to say... as a Solaris/Linux administrator who uses Linux as my main desktop... I have to say, your demonstration of how much Linux and Solaris both Apple and MS use just makes me think I'm in the right place!... As for Apple and MS, I'm content to let them fight it out because in the end, it can only benefit everyone if MS's monopoly is broken.

do people understand the the linux software used or borrowed (however you wish to see it) isnt under any sort of license. its free game, that allows you to build an operating system. what apple has done with this "borrow software" is developed it and refined the code into something more useable. you have to admit a lot of linux distros and software are unfinished and no polish. at least apple has seen all these great user tweaks and addons to make the experience of a computer better.

in practice, mac OSX Snow leopard probes to be a fast, efficient and stable OS. als OSX SL 64-bit has efficiently and effectively schrunken to 5GB from its OSX 10.5 predecessor (12GB), whereas win7 64bit is 20GB! ok, there's a lot less freezes and crashes as compared to previous versions of windows, but now there's some huge compatibility issues (where even XP mode isnt working), also alot of programs fail to install, common issues. 4. The Windows API isn't more advanced... It's more complicated, that's something different
My conclusion: go watch some "Why Macs are better" videos, and try a Mac out at an Apple store, you'll know Mac's are better, even if that means they're pricier.

I don't hate Macs, like them actually. The GUI is pretty sleek and smooth even on their cheapest models, compared to Windows which can be very sluggish on crappy systems.
But, what I hate is, the "Mac Fanboys", the unreasonable price range, and Apple itself.
I hate Apple due to the fact that even though they borrow code from a third party and make a fortune out of it, they get upset when someone makes a bunch of phones that have somewhat similar interface and functions as their iPhones.

Interesting points, although, when you use the OS, which of those facts even matter? I believe most people learn how to hack from a pc rather than a mac, so you would be most vulnerable on a pc than a mac. I don't need directX because I own an xbox, thus my gaming is covered.

@mecanos28 this is supposedly the case, however, I can run thousands of advanced media editing programs on my Windows. It's not my job, so I cant really judge but Photoshop works on Mac and Windows. Theres so much software for windows. It seems, in the eyes of someone who does only low-end media editing, that they are equal on this front.

FreeBSD is open source, while Macs are possibly the most expensive computers I know of.
You could buy an Xserve for $500 more than annual support on a server using Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5 Advanced!
Unless I had to use Red Hat, I would build a computer for $800, install FreeBSD, and do complicated setup until my server works. BOOM, there's the page that says "It works!"

A Mac is able to do everything I need without issue: music, pictures, games (i.e. The Sims 3), word processing, spreadsheets, VIRTUALIZATION, and last but not least, e-mail and web browsing. For the average user, a Mac will work. Only in platform-specific applications is any one operating system necessary. (I could switch to Linux right now without any issues.)

That doesn't make sense. Windows cannot run Unix apps natively (SFU / Cygwin are NOT native). POSIX is not Unix. The OpenVMS kernel is not Unix. DOS is not Unix. What are you smoking?

There is an operating system called Mac OS X SERVER. Also, that guy did not 'get famous' for hacking a Mac, he decided that out of Ubuntu Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows Vista (all fully updated), OS X was the easiest to hack. This guy is a security expert, too.
