Becker really became old. Edberg still plays every week and is fast on his feet, a big difference between their physis. There are several balls Becker did not follow to the net as he would have done in his active times. However, a real pleasure to see them both play!

Tennis ability is not measured by the number of Grand Slams won. I believe Laver was correct in saying that you can only find the greatest of your generation, because due to different rackets, balls, fitness, competition quality, and other factors, it's virtually impossible to compare two players from different eras.

Honestly; would Federer's game be better than Becker's at the time if you gave him a racket from the 1980's? Probably not. Becker would do relatively better with a modern racket.

the strength of returns. Rackets back then were extremely heavy compared to modern ones, and shots were far more limited.

However, it's very impressive that, even by today's standards, Ivan Lendl had incredible groundstrokes and variety. Sampras and Becker had serves that would STILL dominate modern players (not to the same extent, of course, for the reasons I listed).

Edberg had an incredibly consistent and strong serve with a net game above the average modern singles player's net game.

Serve and volley is not dead; I agree with you. I'm a serve and volleyer myself, but you can't argue that new rackets don't change anything. Tennis has adapted only to racket changes in the last few years. People CAN hit (only) from the baseline, so they do.

I have to make a few comments on your posts.

I do in fact agree with you, Nadal is DEFINITELY not the greatest of all time. But when you dismiss players like Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Sampras, and the other greats as 'slow' and 'weak.'

The fact is, new racket technology (and the slowing of Wimbledon's courts) has drastically changed the way this game is played.
