I have an issue in my Ford Contour where the engine shuts off randomly while taking the foot off the gas peddle, but usually it happens at turns or while braking, the throttle at idle is a bit low. But while driving and keeping constant foot on the gas pedal, it never shuts off. It seems the TPS might be the issue.
@logicCplusplus Very easy to do yourself. Find a video here on Youtube, Im sure there is one for you vehicle. With what you descibed it looks like your TB (Throttle Body) is gunked up by carbon and is restricting air flow. If that doesnt fix your problem then you might want to take a look at your IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). It lets your car breathe while your foot is off the pedal.
Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. I changed the IAC valve 2 months ago, but the problem still persists.
The problem occurs usually while slowing down/braking it has a tendency for the engine to shut off. While idle it has a tendency to go extremely low RPM, but sometimes its fine.
You maybe right I will try to clean the Throttle Body today and see if it helps.
Seems like the problem is still there. The cars engine hasn't shut off yet, but I think the problem hasn't gone away as the Rpm still goes lower than 800 on idle. I guess a few more days of driving will tell for sure but seems like it didn't help.
I have a 92 Chevy c1500 with the 4.3 five speed. It bucks and hesitates when I give it acceleration but when I accelerate hard or let off completely, it seems to run fine; doesn’t like to accelerate calmly though. When I tested the TPS with an ohm meter connected to it. My numbers started at like 2.00 then went up to 6.3 or so, and then came back down to 3.10 or so as I increased my throttle even further to the wide open position, is this normal? The SES light does come on intermittently.
@buddiiee Just dropping by to tell you to get your head out of your ass. There's plenty of carbureted cars still on the road. The video is still up to date since they showed how to test the TPS of a Carbureted AND Fuel Injected engine. So you get Old school AND New School.
Is it true that you cannot just replace the tps in a '93 silverado (350ci tbi), but you have to replace the entire throttle body as it says in my haynes repair manual?

Have a old peugeot 205 mono jetronic system and cant get throttle position sensor at all, only a whole throttle body. So i built a hall efect position sensor instead of a pot sensor. What a defferance!!!
My '99 Intrepid just starts & stalls! A check engine light came on & off Prior to this! But Is the throttle position sensor my issue? Its like $80.00? Will this Cause my Intrepid to Stall??
dosent sound like it dude, you would be using the whole range of the tps sensor both above and below 40 mph, try snapping the throttle at different speeds in all the gears an see if it happens all the time or if it only happens at a certain throttle position or in a specific gear then go from there
i have an 89 lincoln town car and the engine kinda hesitates and shakes as i speed up my mechanic says it might be this hmmmm

@logicCplusplus So how is your car doing? Did cleaning the throttle body help out any?

don't know if it's bad, disconnect the sensor you think is faulty, now test drive your car.
