It's not so much a bigger rifle at a bigger distance it's probably what type of ammunition your using. Are you using FMJ? If you are than try some soft-point or hollow point. They will be more likely to stop inside of the ball. A little more distance from the target will help a little though!

You should try it with a bigger rifle and at a further distance, the same thing happend with me and lemon with my .22
