Yes, you're supposed to feel sympathy for Travis and understand his views on the city and its inhabitants, but you aren't supposed to be rooting for him and cheering him on when he goes on his killing spree and you when you begin to see that he is PSYCHOTIC. Yeah, obviously he's a psycho, a porn addict, and a killer, but his quest to get a girl out of the world of prostitution was actually pretty admirable. Also, at this point in the movie, he wasn't about to kill anyone. He gradually was driven into insanity as the movie progressed, and then he killed all those people. And it cuts in layers throughout the movie insofar as who's right and who's wrong. The end leaves us with Travis as a hero in the press and in his own mind of course he did exactly what was right.
