am not sure its realy creating exitment to funs or sponsors as car races do, or if it is beneficial to the advance of spaceflight technology and science...:(
to fuel these thing in reality would cost more than the stadium and advertising would bring in. each race would cost over a billion dollars. it'd be a huge waste of fuel even if they did do it...
@Crypt1cmyst1c Over a billion dollars? how do you figure that ? these are only small planes with a small rocket engine powered by liquid oxygen and ethanol on them not actual space craft. I've seen rocket powered trucks at air shows.
@CanadianFabe each racer costs upwards of 1million, between designing the racers, fueling them, training a pilot, each probably comes out to cost approximately 8million per race. buying/renting airspace for the track would be incredibly expensive, as its not as small as a car racing or even a redbull air-race course. paying officials, commentators, track design specialists, safety inspectors, chase planes, (and chase plane pilots) could probably add up to another 500 million per race, (i'm also
@CanadianFabe extrapolating a bit for inflation at the time these would take place)
additionally, the race operators would have to have extra fuel on hand, which even with today's prices on jet fuel would be costly, as those planes would be burning high energy density fuels which are richer and costlier than normal jet-fuel. trust me, ive done my math, and one of these races would cost over $1billion
@Crypt1cmyst1c interesting, as they just held a short event in Tulsa Ok, and I guaranee it wasn't close to a 1 billion $ cost. The current generation of racers(Mark II and Mark III) burn 500 pounds of Liquid oxygen and 500 pounds of Ethanol, costing less than $500 per tank. It takes a team of two to fuel and maintain each vehicle.
This is pure BULLSHIT, they have been talking about this for almost 3 years and have never got off the ground. There was supposed to be an exhibit race in Oshkosh last year, didn't happen.
I think what they are trying to do is get enough interest up so they can sell a video game they have in the works.
Don't invest any money in this or you'll surely get taken.
I hope to stand correct, SOMEBODY please prove me wrong. Try to Thin cosmic on this one, folks pretty video graphics, no substance.
Heck, this should go over like a turd in a punch bowl. Most people can't relate to this. NASCAR, who's fan base is slowly deteriorating, is at least something most fans can relate to.
Don't get too excited. The teaser used yards of poetic licence to sex it up. Safety and refuelling logistics are going to prohibit a sort of "Indy in the sky" event. The truth is that for many many years the expectation shown here is going to exceed the event. Sorry, but prepare to get let down and deflated somewhat.
Its even further along than Breadguy01 knows - they've already flown the first X-Racer, have 6 teams, and should be flying exhibition races sometime next year. Its entirely concievable that the first competative races will be held late next year.
The problem is that it can't work this way. For one, the racers have to be staggered, like a rally, because it's way too dangerous to have them race side by side. Second, they have to stop for a pit stop like every 3-4 laps
there are other air races where they fly all at once... sure accidents happen but thats part of the sport... the pilots are full aware of what they are doing and what they are in for.
I would assume the heat out of the back of a Rocket powered plane is quite large and even if you were able to not get the nose of your plane melted off the thermal currents would throw you around?
watch nextworld and you will know evrything bout it!!

It will be soon. They have a website and some sponsored teams already. This is the first time I've seen this teaser though, and I'm loving this.
Anyone got a spare $2 million US? You can get a team in Rocket Racing with that ^_^
