@Kanuskiz, Good thing I bought a compilation of the movies and even a compilation of both OVA sets. Loved the robots, they're so grounded in reality. I liked the JSDF labors (Helldiver FTW!) and damn if they did really exist in our world. It's gonna change warfare forever.
One of the interesting things about Patlabor 2 is that it's not a mech movie/anime at all. The Patlabors and military Labors in the movie are just another tool amongst the myriad of others used to complete the objectives of the characters.
It's a suspense/war film, through and through. I wonder if Tom Clancy has seen it, as I would think he would very much appreciate it's level of intrigue.
Yes, I had same thought! Tom Clancy might like this movie. Though the show did not focus on Labors unlike movie 1, I appreciated the political suspense and war mystery plot of this movie.
Fantastic intro. Most films try to be high octine to force the audiences attention, whilst Patlabor 2 gives us a mixture of wonder, spectacle and realism.
This movie is truly the last story for Patlabor franchise. Noa is completely grew out of her love for Alphonse, Asuma ultimately ended up working in his father's company that he hated so much and the 2nd SVU division is irreversibly disbanded at the end. Lastly, Goto does not end up with Shinobu... Of course, this is the ending for one continuity. The alternate timeline just ended without a real denouement.
Patlabor movies are all officially connected. Chronologically, that continuity is: Old OVAs - movie 1 - movie 3 - movie 2. I was also pissed off tha the first feature in 8 years had only few minutes of the original cast and Ingrams. But I appreciated how the good old voices had remained unchanged, though there was no Kanuka Clancy (RIP Inoue). I also liked Ingrams' more realistic movements. I believe some fans protested the movie 2 ending with no Goto x Shinobu.
@Kanuskiz I think movie 2 was easily the strongest with part 1 coming in 2nd. Like i said, i HATED the third movie as it was just a depressing "nothing happening" type story.
You're so right about "nothing happening" in movie 3. Wasted too much time on those two cops, when that time could have been well used on showing the 2nd SVU division 2 members.
@Kanuskiz you know what's weird? I thought the OVA, the TV series, and the movies were all part of one continuity. Although I never got to watch the TV series whole (only got as far as the Phantom storyarc), the part where Asuma made up with his father for me seemed to take place in late 2000 ( I still got a Protoculture Addicts eps guide). The retirement of Alphonse was May 2001, nine months before P2.
@s0nnyburnett it,s worth it the mech designs are entirely different then any of Gundam,s designs and they show more of the mechanical stuff (like shown in the opening) it,s setting is also refreshing (set in a more urban area somewhere in 90,s Japan instead of space)
@Kanuskiz it,s made late 80,s and early 90,s this is reflected in the art style (the Ingram would look entirely different if it was designed in the 00,s)

@extraleague01 me too. When i saw "the siege", it made me think of this movie a bit, if only due to a simular theme of occupation.

Respond to this video... This sort of thing will be possible once we move past petroleum and really dive into alternative energy sources.

@Blastaar7
If an alternative energy source that is more powerful and stable is developed, Labors or Mobile Suits may be possible? LOL.

@mobius1aic Can you recommend any good "Mech-Anime" film's please?

@Kanuskiz It's bitter sweet. I know i really hated patlabor 3, even though it takes place before this one. Or is that the alt time line?

@WeissVogel
*P2's timeline: Old OVAs - Movie 1 - Movie 3 - Movie 2
(It does not contain the SCHAFT arc, except one episode that deals with some stolen SCHAFT labors.)
*Alternate timeline: TV series - New OVAs (which also continues the SCHAFT arc)
We see Asuma's father for the first time in last OVA episode, but only his back with no voice.
Asuma talks to him and still does not make up with him. You can say Goto is somewhat like the stand-in father for Asuma in the series.

Not to annoy you or anything, but this movie takes place in 2002. haha. I wish Labors existed as of today, 2011.

@Kanuskiz and yes I know it,s set in the early 2000,s but it,s made in the 90,s or 80,s which is reflected in the aesthetics.
