Lovely perfornance, as only Bostridge could render. This is the first art song I ever heard...I fell in love with as a child, and it's still a great favourite. It does bother me that a whole measure was cut off the introduction, but other than that, it's flawless. Thanks for posting this!
Watch Ian Bostridge in a complete performance of Haydn's Creation this weekend 12-15 June, free, online at the London Symphony Orchestra's website. Visit our channel for more information.
I saw him at Spivey Hall and was blown away by not only his vocal talent, but his interpretive and acting abilities. The recording from that night is absolutely magical. I have also turned pages for Julius Drake while he was accompanying another singer, and he is amazing as well
Hey Cmp, You are so lucky I live not far from Atlanta but have yet to see anywhere in the country he is giving a recital in the upcoming year. I would love to see him live. Thanks for the post!
If you like him, you should look at Spivey's new concert series. It's only about 10 minutes away from the airport, and totally worth it. I'm a stage manager and a student there, so if you're dubious I could get you in for free your first time.
If Ian is ever there again I will hold you to that, I wouldn't even mind paying! I looked at the calendar yesterday and if he's got a recital scheduled there soon it's not listed on the Spivey Hall website. Thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it!
Gorgeous diction and clarity, both Bostridge and his accompanist. The crispness of Bostridge's interpretation offers an interesting contrast to the more traditional performances, particularly the syrupy German singers like Prey.
Thanks for the info; I shall look for this recording. Listening to "Die Forelle" again I'm once more touched by Bostridge's purity of interpretation. This is such an easy song to wallow in and he so beautifully avoids that.
How very sweet, touching, sensitive and loving are the German poets of the 19th century!!

He must have worked so hard. He's British and sings German without any accent....

I've just listened to more than ten performances of this song. This is the best.

The singular form is actually "Lied", but agreed, very easy to listen to piece...unlike some of the stuff out there.

Some of it can be very dry and deathly depending on the singer.

The excellent accompanist is Julius Drake, who also accompanies with crispness and sonority on IB's "English Songbook" album; highly recommended.
