@webgeek6 the point of this song (from what Fripp mentioned) was for the drummer to to what drummers don't normally do.... ie...while the bass (stick) and guitar kept the basic rhythm, and the drums are free to interpret/solo over it... and play with time, tempo and dynamics
..from now on you wil refer to him as Mr. Bruford. This guy has always been my favorite drummer...honestly I think hes a genius. I remember the first time and place I heard his music.. I remember the day like it was yesterday. It was actually a vinyl record; a live recording of One of a Kind. The first track was Hells Bells, and I'd never heard such a crazy time signiture before. I'm surprised he isn't credited as an influence more often.
Bruford is a fantastic drummer & music legend. I love & really appreciate his work when he was with Yes. I feel that he should've stayed with that band. But he obviously prefers more abstract music. Maybe I'm too much of a simple man but I don't really get what he's doing here. It's off the wall to me like, okay, whatever. Some people have too much brain & too much time, it's scary. Oh well, at least he gets paid for it, right? I'm really not knocking the guy, I love Bill Bruford - with Yes!
@TheDrumWolf have you never heard King Crimson? He takes rhythm to new and previously unexplored levels(as he did with Yes)...granted the performance here is out there, he has done much of his best work outside of Yes.
I am a huge Yes fan & am only familiar with Bruford through that band. I've never heard any King Crimson music believe it or not. The world of music is so vast & there are alot of groups that I'll probably never get to hear in my lifetime. Would you recommend something if you would be so kind? Perhaps something that I could look up here on YouTube. I realize that what Bruford is doing here is on a much higher level, maybe on another planet. I'm not a college educated person so help me out.
i'm very sorry i sounded insulting.....not meant that way. i never like to hear anyone think they aren't as aware as another. music is vast and is never-ending. what i was trying to say, which i didn't......was that no one can listen to everything! we learn new things all the time. you probably have heard music none of us have. please accept my humble apology. i never heard of bill bruford till he joined kc because i didn't listen to yes. so i am sure all of us fans have felt the way you do!
@TheDrumWolf Absolutely start at the beginning. In The Court of the Crimson King. Look up the tracklist and listen to the album in order start to finish.
@TheDrumWolf Sorry forgot you were asking about Bruford. He's not on In the Court, but I'd say start there anyway. Bruford joined in 73 on Lark's Tongues in Aspic. Just listen to everything from Lark''s to Beat. The 'USA' live album is excellent too. Some are better than others, Red is the last one before the 70's breakup. Discipline ('81) is the reformation of the band with Belew and Levin. Discipline is one of the best albums ever made imho. Up there with In he Court.
Bill has three grown children and continues to live in the Surrey Hills with Carolyn and two cats. He retired from public performance on January 1 2009 after 41 years as a musician, and published his autobiography in March 2009.
Haven't read the book yet, but I'm sure it's very interesting.
Yup. I heard that before. And then I read it in an interview in Prog magazine. He wants to be with his wife. No tours, no studio. Nothing. He wants to be just a regular man.
That was the best Bruford solo I've seen on here so far. Incredibly creative. His setup is so cool too. Too bad the sound quality isn't a little better.
Bill has said many times that he does not consider himself a very technically virtuostic drummer.
Some things to ponder:
1. Consider his touch, how he can play with the same precision at both volume extremes: ppp and fff.
2. Consider what he DOESN'T play: someone once said that music is what happens between the notes. Bill embodies that, and is now afraid to leave "open spaces".
3. His musicality. It's not just rhythm to Bill: not just drumming: it's making music. Exploring the edges.....
alan white's style is different than bill's but that doesn't mean it to be necessarily inferior, i think alan white is quite amazing, he demonstrated it live and on records like relayer, tales from topographic oceans and drama, tho i agree white was less ambicious than bruford
I'm guilty of not hearing much Alan White...only the YES stuff that he sloshes thru and doesn't attemp any Bruford nuances. Nothing against Alan...he's a survivor, I'm just a huge Bruford fan.
Buddy Guy, Buddy Rich, Max Roach,Gene Krupa,Neil Peart, Dave Lomabardo, Bill Bruford & ... Sean ... off of the top of my head .. phenomenal drummers and my faves.
That was awful , well not awful but a tad disappointing .. I have to find the whole thing now.
Where was this from?.. he is so old in this vid, like he is trying to relive his kick ass days from Yes and Crimson, which he fucking rocked!!..BB is cool, but he looks bored here, and that aint right!
Yes,, but that was long ago, as much I love yes, I think BB was much better as a skin man for Crimson, but this video is pitiful as far as BB's real talent..... love him even if he looks like he is trying to teach newbies how to tan some skins...
definitely a different kind of drummer. just his style is different from others ive seen. his arms are wide open and barely ever cross. and the way he holds the stick is something ive never seen before either. its like hes just pointing
i was thinking the same thing. when he does the few measures of 4/4 double-time at the beginning and then lands right on the 5/4 downbeat, i was like "this dude is a mathematical genius."
mmmmm, it's not double time, that would be easy, the vamp's in 8/4, and he's taking 5th-notes and doing a four-beat pattern with those... so it's in five-fourths time... the math isn't that hard, but actually hearing where the 5th-notes are supposed to be is not natural. He does the same thing with half-fifths near the end. thirds and fifths push the beat out of control, thirds to make it feel sluggish, fifths to make it feel hyper. it's like rhythmic drugs. ack!
not sure about that one. it sounds to me like the overall pulse is 4 (or 8) then he's taking 12 over 8 accenting3,7,11 of the 12, then on it goes. i'd be interested to hear your rationale.
thanks for getting into the discussion, i love BB's melodic rhythm.
wholly schmidt, dizzles, this jazzle-saurus Rex, with those frawndastulous impedications, that is ossum, Billy B. has really turned out to be one of my best pupils. dude Khatru ROX!!!!!
Popdrummer? lol. He's a musician...a studied one. An accomplished polyrythmic drummer. Of course...known for his work in art rock (Yes, King Crimson and some time with Genesis as well), and fusion. But never a popdrummer!
bb is to my knowledge the best popdrummer there ever was, he is not only a part of the rythm sexion, he is a compleet muscisian. mind my language i,am not english.
gentlemen...im a victim of to much sex drugs and rock and roll .....my times are off ....i was back stage at the spectrum in philly and norfolk va....ill call my buddy in Cal and get the date strait....if i can remember his phone# lol
when i first heard roundabout [YES] in 68 or 69 i was blown away by BB and have been ever since....i met him and YES in 74 and was honored to be serenaded by them BB is THE BEST there is in my humble opinion
He completely laughs at rhythm. He has absolute mastery over it and plays with it like a cat. I've never seen a drummer so completely free do whatever he feels like, like some four year old with sticks that starts banging, yet so completely aware of where "1" is and what he's doing. It's amazing and hilarious. I'm not a great drummer, but I think you have to be advanced to even know fully the skill here, yet, you don't have to be a drummer at all to enjoy it.
21st Century Schizoid Man was usually the encore number during KC's Starless & Bible Black tour. Lots of good bootlegs floating around from that one, including a live broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour.
As a drummer, Bruford trumps Giles any day of the week IMHO.
i play the drums, but i am too basic... this rythms are beatuifull to me... i love it... great drummer bruford... i never heard much of him, but it´s extremely creative and spontaneous... beautifull...
We should stop calling it a solo over Indiscipline. It's Indiscipline. This is, basically, what he did throughout the original version. (and yes... his solos are awesome!)
but it's a great solo nonetheless. Unfortunatley, the clip stops before the big climax. BTW, I saw him do this in Long Island a couple of months ago. It was beautiful.
bruford is one of the best soloists out there. one of the few drummers whose solos dont turn into a bland, brainless regurgitation of chops within a few bars
once again mr bruford shows us why he is one of the worlds greatest drummers

The song is awkward to listen to on th album..but seeing bill playing it it really show's that it isn't complete nonsense.

Any idea if this was the clinic he gave in Hamilton? Because it looks like the one I went to, I can't tell.

He's just the greatest, smartest drummer of all times. He has an incredible, unique way of drumming.
Long live Bill Bruford.
Long live Robert Fripp!

Popdrummer? lol. He's a musician...a studied one. An accomplished polyrythmic drummer. Of course...known for his work in art rock (Yes, King Crimson and some time with Genesis as well), and fusion. But never a popdrummer!
EmiliaB87 4 years ago
He is NOT a pop drummer dude! He is anything But a pop drummer.

bb is to my knowledge the best popdrummer there ever was, he is not only a part of the rythm sexion, he is a compleet muscisian. mind my language i,am not english.

There are recordings of Bruford playing 21st Schizoid Man but Giles played it originally of course.
grandpascorpion 4 years ago
21st Century Schizoid Man was usually the encore number during KC's Starless & Bible Black tour. Lots of good bootlegs floating around from that one, including a live broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour.
As a drummer, Bruford trumps Giles any day of the week IMHO.
drhowarddrfinedrhowa 4 years ago
thats true, but giles is still regarded as a extremely innovative drummer
1337jazzdrums 4 years ago 2
I agree, Mike Giles drumming is cool. He's especially good on the Giles Giles & Fripp Brondesbury Tapes CD.

i play the drums, but i am too basic... this rythms are beatuifull to me... i love it... great drummer bruford... i never heard much of him, but it´s extremely creative and spontaneous... beautifull...

if you're referring to the original off the court of the crimson king, that wasn't bruford. it was michael giles.

We should stop calling it a solo over Indiscipline. It's Indiscipline. This is, basically, what he did throughout the original version. (and yes... his solos are awesome!)

The audio makes it tough to hear the subtlety
but it's a great solo nonetheless. Unfortunatley, the clip stops before the big climax. BTW, I saw him do this in Long Island a couple of months ago. It was beautiful.
grandpascorpion 5 years ago
bruford is one of the best soloists out there. one of the few drummers whose solos dont turn into a bland, brainless regurgitation of chops within a few bars
