December 31, 1989, Pointe Depot, Dublin, Ireland; Bono said they were going to go away for a while and "dream it all up again" (the end of the fist phase)

i wish Bozo would stop pretending as though he is playing the guitar. the guy is such a phony with his platform shoes, hair plugs, and tax evading accounts. What a complete fraud he is
As a major U2 fan (of their 1980s tours, not the spectacle stuff later) and also witness to The Who live in the 1970s, it's a great tribute to The Who. Bono has said how much Townshend's charity work gave him the idea to do it, and The Edge is on film and video paying to PT and JE as influences.
As a pure live band in their prime imo The Who are the greatest ever. But even PT says about U2 that they are able to create emotions now with sonic nuance that PT's generation needed brute force.
U2 is really awesome! I don't think there are many bands that can cover songs as good as they can. They took a great Who song and made it their own. That takes talent!
Wow,one of the early classics.Didn't noticed that they were playing it in this decade.Reminds me of all what was important for me in the 80' far away from the most meaningless music of this decade.I'm stunned
The Boy/October era had the best renditions of 11 O'clock Tick Tock. This rendition here just doesn't have 'it'.
Also, nearly every album was it's own era. Though Boy/October is distinct from War, and Boy is distinct from October, but Boy/October as an era was particularly special.
This show had great significance in the history of U2. It marked the beginning of the 3rd phase of the band. The first ended with Rattle and Hum, the second with Pop, which, according to "the critics" was a metaphor for a loud sound made by a dying band. This night at Irving Plaza, U2 made it known that they "won't be fooled again". Their next 2tours and albums (ATYCLB and HTDAAB), were the 1-2 punch that knocked the critics on their rear ends and had the world singing their songs again.........
@crashj71- nonsense, U2's general phases are: The first ended with War. Their second phase began with Unforgettable Fire and ended with Rattle and Hum. Their third phase was the nineties, Achtung to Pop. This video performance, well say, marked the beginning of their fourth phase, which they are currently in.
Seeing as the Who were unquestionably the most virtuoso (virtuos?) of all rock ensembles, Edge and Larry did pretty well on the cover. Adam is no Entwistle, but to be fare, who is? Quite good version, bit like the Ramones doing it.
im a huge u2 fan and a massive who fan anyone who doesnt know who the who's guitarist is can hardly judge whether he is better than edge or not u idiot u2 r my favourite band ever but edge aint as gd as pete
This is how 'won't get fooled again' bass line should be played.... btw I love Adam's bass style also... I'm actually in a U2 tribute band... yep I'm the bass player....
you're probably just jealous that the Edge's guitar performance is better than the "guitar player" from The Who, so you're bringing attention to the bass music instead. Second, it's a cover and U2 gave it their own flavor obviously, but you wouldn't know that as a non-U2 hater. Third, I doubt you were searching for U2 content. Perhaps it was a search for "Won't Get Fooled Again"? hmmm?
Bono skips a beat at 5:40. And the bass player apparently isn't quite familiar with Won't Get Fooled Again. Van Halen's cover is much better, plus Michael Anthony does a much better job of covering the bass.
I don't know his name for a reason. Because he's f---ing up The Who's crown jewel, Won't Get Fooled Again, a song any halfass who thinks he might want to pick up a bass should learn. In the grand scheme of things, I doubt this crummy bass player will be remembered by anyone other than U2 fans or even mentioned in the same breath as John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, or Bootsy Collins. Fucknut.
LOL, what pathetic loser and a U2 hater you are. Yeah, I guess he was too busy working on The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby to be wasting time on "Won't Get Fooled Again" Pull your head out and recognize greatness...bow down to me. You are my bitch from now on.
Not a U2 hater-why do you think I took the time to look them up on youtube? You avoid my point w/silly trashtalk that makes no difference to anyone. Despite any stale gibe you may respond w/theres nothing you can do or say thatll make their underachieving bassist any better or more relevant to any realm of music thought other than diehard U2 fans. The bottom line is U2s bass player sucks in this clip. Attempt a refute of this argument & further demonstrate your remedial music taste & knowledge.
This concert was held Dec. 5th 2000 at New York's Irving Plaza a small performance theater...it was a promotional concert for the ALTYCLB album...it was an audience of only radio contest winners.
Radio contest winners. So basically peope who were just glad they won something off the radio and not real U2 fans. I hate radio contest winners because half the time they're just people who love trying to win shit off the radio regardless of what it is lol.
It's def slower than previous cuts. But i think Edge's solo at the end is much more haunting. Helped by perfect acoustics of Irving Plaza. Won't get Fooled again is pretty good, but absoultey nowhere near the Who doing on The Kids are Alright.

This is amazing. I never thought I'd see anything like this.
Granted, Clayton isn't as complex as Entwistle is, but it's U2, and the emphasis is more on Bono and Edge, so it's still awesome.
