@jnagengast How was band practice volume? I'm thinking of getting one too, as my band plays Classic Rock covers. I already have a Marshall TSL 122, but sometimes need that extra push
Thank you Andy, I'm recieving in my Hellbender tomorrow, your videos convinced me to pull the trigger on one. My current (and longtime) favorite overdrive is a Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive which I LOVE, yet I don't believe I hear the classic Marshall tones in it as I do with the Rothwell. Will be fun using them together, I believe the Hellbender will be my baseline rhythm tone then I'll add in the Landgraff for lead sustain. Perhaps I'll post up my own "Smackdown" vid of them.
Literally, just picked one up in your store today, LOVE IT!!! And I've learned it stacks surprisingly well with my Multidrive!! You guys should experiment, you'll enjoy what you hear!!
I did buy this pedal to celebrate selling every marshall I ever bought and sold after enjoying them lol! Hellbender is a happening tone for classic rock to harder rock saturation gain and made my choice easy because they're were too many lovepedals to choose from. I'm on the verge of purchasing a 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb RI for the outstanding clean tones to keep my rig compact and versatile. That or perhaps an Orange Tiny or Dual Terror. What do you think?
@GameLevelEditor The DRRI is soooooooo apples to Oranges TT pears.... way different. DRRI is bright clear, articulate, the Orange is warm, fat and fruity (ooer). Yuo need to decide what flavour you want as pedals will sound very different between the two bro.
I think this thing sounds amazing. How does it respond to using the guitars volume knob? Can you get it "clean" like when rolling back the guitars volume through a vintage Marshall?
The best thing about this pedal are the mids and natural presence you get which is pretty unique, its also extremely quiet at max levels. This is a top notch pedal.
This is a reason why GAS is sometimes good. This pedal sounds like about the best OD I've heard to date because it sounds authentic to my ears. My rothwell hellbender is in town now I'm contemplating the F1 boost as well that'll be next! I'm liking Rothwell product quality and hope they keep that up.
If i could only pick one OD pedal I'd get this one! Like many I've owned zillions of them and this one hits home has what I'd consider useful tones. I'm listening to it with very discerning ears so you can say I'm sold on it now all I have to do is buy one!
Got my hellbender and love squeeze today... EPIC PEDALS!!!! Got a awesome natural drive off the hellbender with low gain.. then with the compressor as a booster getting some screaming overdrive!!!
If you go to the PGS site, there are 2 different videos - the 2nd one uses a Les Paul and a Deluxe Reverb Reissue for a Led Zep tribute, Andy sure knows his Led Zep - and I love his tone!
you can basically get any good sound out of a true american tele. It has a little more twang which is a vintage style.
But with a good tube amplifier you can get a good warm sound from it to give you that Zeppelin sound. Jimmy Page used a gibson les paul not a telecaster. Once again some good tube amps are a fender twin reverb, vox ac30CC2, or if you have the money get a JTM45 marshall sound for that UK distortion that keith richards and Jimmy page have.
Page used a Tele for all of led zeppelin 1 and the solo on stairway and various other things. In the late 70's he favored late 60's strats. he was mostly a les paul guy, but he loved his teles too...and in the studio he used tiny 15-20watt amps for major crunch at low volumes
pushing or driving the front end means driving the power amp valves, giving a meatier distortion as the power amp valves are more powerful. less gain and more vol on the pedal puts more watts through the power tubes.
The OCD seems to have a wider range, but if you want the style of sound coming out of the hellbender, I'd buy it. The Hellbender beats the OCD in the classic marshall overdrive sound, but the OCD can do more. That's what I've observed at least.
It's also because they use high quality cables, a low noise environment. He uses an Epiphone Les Paul with Semour Duncan pickups. Also Deluxe Reverbs sound WAY different from AC30s and your blues junior.
Although it may not be too overly "brutal," if you're talking like Metallica gain levels, The Homebrew Electronics Full Metal Jacket is probably the best sounding distortion unit I have ever heard. And I' not a fan of distortion pedals haha
Personally, I don't think the pedal is very good for GnR, you need a good amp for that, but the pedal itself is pretty good sounding, it does sound good for Lenny Kravitz though.
IMO a deluxe, twin, or super reverb beats a marshall. That's probably because i'm extremely happy with the distortion pedals i have. i usually don't use amp distortion because when i play at church, i don't use an amp and plug straight into the mains.

Try the MJM Brit Bender. I'm pretty certain that Paige used the Soul Bender fuzz with the Tele on Zeppelin 1.

What does it mean to push the front end?
itowedin 2 years ago
It means to distort the amp by putting a lot of volume into it. So the overdrive sound you hear is the amp breaking up.

pushing or driving the front end means driving the power amp valves, giving a meatier distortion as the power amp valves are more powerful. less gain and more vol on the pedal puts more watts through the power tubes.

Hey Andy,
I got this pedal but it doesn't sound like you in your demo.
I'd play through a vox AC30 and a Fender Blues Junior with two different Les Paul.
What kind of Les Paul did you use for the demo ?
What were your settings on the deluxe ?
Thank you
neozecat 2 years ago
It's also because they use high quality cables, a low noise environment. He uses an Epiphone Les Paul with Semour Duncan pickups. Also Deluxe Reverbs sound WAY different from AC30s and your blues junior.
Ilovemyfender2 2 years ago 2
how loud do you have the amp set? the amp needs to be somewhat loud to begin with in order to sound good.
