We made the wheels from 1/4" Lexan (Polycarbonate) material. We then put an o-ring groove around the circumference and snapped in an o-ring. This gives us good traction. I am fortunate to have a mill and a lathe in our garage were we can have the students custom machine some of these parts. O have seen people use CD's and drape wide rubber bands over them, They seem to be effective if the axle is centered. Good Luck!
I was wondering, how do you guys make the wheels?? Do you buy stock wheels and literally drill a 1/4" hole in the middle?? if so then may I ask where did you buy them? thanks :)
We have spacers that are measured to set the stop block on the all thread axle for the various distances the cars run. We have the spacers calibrated to stop the car 15 cm or so short. This is to take into account that the floor may be slippery. For the 2nd run, we have shims that we put in with the spacer. If the car was 15cm short on the first run, we will put in shims with the spacer to get it to go an additional 14 cm.
The launching Mechanism is a pendulum that is hinged at the top. They pull it back and there is a pin that keeps it from dropping. There is a push rod that goes from the bottom of the pendulum to the car. When the pendulum is released, it pushes on the push rod which propels the car. When it is at the end of it's swing, the car pulls away. If you go full screen and watch when the car launches, you may be able to see what I am talking about.
im starting to build my scrambler, but i have no idea what im doing. I was going to try the same kind of breaking system as your team with CD's as wheels, but I don't know what to do to secure the threaded rod axis into the Cd's, any ideas??????
You can get all threas at Home Depot, Lowes or any other home center. 1/4-20 (That is a 1/4" rod with 20 threads per inch) is a good size to start with. I have some drawings that might help you. I will send you a message to figure out how to get them to you.
I want to use the threaded rod, but I can't understand how the wheel on the opposite side of the stop can stay in place. Wouldn't it travel down the rod too? or is the block the only one that can travel down it?
The block is the only thing that travels down the rod. The threaded rod is an axle. The bearing surface the rod spins inside does not have threads. This allows the axle to freely spin. The block is threaded and it moves down the axle
RScory, The Braking device is a threaded rod with a block (Special Nut) that travels on the rod. We know how far to set the block from the stop for the desired distance.
How steep is the reganals? How far is it from the wall? I'm doing the scrambler and I won use your idea. This is the first time my schools doing this. I just have some questions.
I don't understand your question about how steep. I think the distance for this run was 8 1/2 or 9 meters. The distance for the run can be any distance from 8 to 12 meters. Good Luck with your device!

hi there!!

I mean, non-slippery kind of wheels like yours. I've heard that people use CDs to make wheels but then, they are pretty slippery :(

what adjustments did you make on your car after the first run?

Could you substitute the all thread with a large screw with the pointed end cut off? cause I can't find a threaded rod.... do you think it will work?
oniguriprincess 3 years ago
I do not think a screw will work very well.

where do you find a threaded rod??

to cut down on the weight of the car, u can cut out holes in the car. that will take down the weight

very nice

man that was awesome!
What kind of design did you use?
1Spyke23 3 years ago
It is a design we made up ourselves. We used an all thread for the axle and a stop block which moved on the all thread.

Hey, how do you make the brake?
my partner and I need some help with our scrambler and the compitition is the coming saturday!!! >.> we sorta procrasinated...

How did you make it stop so suddenly? I don't get the thread and the axle thing.
