Explanation point, even. Thanks for chiming in. I wonder if our words will now unleash a torrent of comments; I still can't fathom how it took over 60,000 listens and 2 years for this to come up. I first came upon this video trying unsuccessfully to find NW's lyrics to the actual tune. I later found her version & did my own upload. It makes for an interesting contrast with this; in fact, I'm submitting it as a video response. in the meantime, tho, just search for "Winstone Mercedes"
@dvdspd21 60,000 listens and no mention of SS? That goes to show that people don't care. A torrent of comments? I doubt it. ;) I stumbled across this Akiko video by chance simply because I'd learned the tune and was looking for some inspiration. BTW I'm a big fan of Norma W.
Stumbled across? Yeah well, considering that the first hit that comes up when you do a LIM search is LLM, I suspect we're not the first pair to have done exactly that. In any case, being that you're into NW, perhaps you're already familiar w/ her version; she recorded it twice that I'm aware of, both with John Taylor, once in '88 & the one I posted, from '99. You might also be interested in the Tina May version from '93, which I've also uploaded.
It's strange also that none of the more than 62,000 who've seen either this or the remix have mentioned the original song or its composer (I can't be the only one who got here via a LIM search). At least none in English: ironically, awareness of Swallow's song, as of jazz itself, seems exponentially higher in Japan than the US; the majority of LIM uploads (at least 10) are of Japanese musicians. Moreover, most came after LLM, so maybe Akiko's version actually sparked interest in the original.
OTOH, it's fun to hear Japanese musicians kicking ass on this lovely reworking of a Latin jazz standard, "Ladies in Mercedes." OTO, it's rough to see them giving ZERO credit to its composer, Steve Swallow. I mean, you can change a word & add a countermelody, but it is what it is; the "amazing accompaniment" is in fact THE SONG, containing within itself the original melody. Am I missing something here? I sincerely hope so, & that, in fact, SS has received credit and, more important, royalties.
It's a Steve Swallow composition. Period.
