@docnozzle tonedeaf are ya? LOL try to get a grip; you are gonna need gorilla glue, but if you use enough and let it dry long enough you just may stick around long enough to have a clue, do not forget this awesome tone of EJ's is done live out of a two bit club with totally crap accoustical properties likely recorded with a beater shure 58 or something
@MrJerrelli Nope, still a dreadful noise, nothing to do with the accoustics or quality of the recording. Just the atonal thrashing around doesnt work for me. Particlaurly when you bear in mind what Eric is capable of. Still, I wish I could play that badly...............
It's good to hear EJ get a little atonal, like around 6:00. He tends to play those major scales, or pentatonic with major 7th thrown in there, to great melodic effect, and it's nice to hear a little tonal edge there. The gritty couterpoint of Oz Noy's guitar is nice. Sometimes EJ's tone is almost too perfect.
@thecarlfia56 it is about tone Eric uses the same process I do, set it and forget it, if it ain't broke don't fix it...too bad the others did not think to practice enough to get tight before going live
Alright enough chit chat about the guitar playing, let's hear it for Anton and Roscoe. It's so nice to see a guy really showcase his chops. So used to seeing Anton puinding out the pop stuff for Letterman. Killer groove, stoopid smooth. Yeah, and the guitar playin ain't bad either.
I've had the honor of playing with them both. Oz murders Eric Johnson... Not TOTALLY subjective. Technically, harmonically, artistically... Oz is where its at. That and I find it repulsive how Eric's playing like he has something to prove.
@guitarbr0 That's a bit harsh. Eric is playing the way he has always played, with his own uniqueness and passion. Besides, the audience loved it -- great playing around by all. peace.
@guitarbr0 Actually, I've never heard Eric play like this. His voicing are excellent and highly appropriate. I love Oz and actually prefer his material but what you're saying about Eric doesn't sound accurate. At least, there's no decent player I've ever met that would say such things.
@jfrockon where do you live? there are groups this hot (without the big marquis names, of course) hidden all around the USA; especially near universities with good music programs...and they're EVERYwhere. :)
@jfrockon oh man. :) there's GOT to be some HARD players out there! I went out for a visit a year back and did some workshops throughout CA... saw some GREAT stuff... not that far from you in san fran
@ichisatori hey man.... i got your email. i sent the octave displacement exercise to you.
as far as time sig in the A is concerned, it's 4/4....it's just the melody is being pushed an eighth note up the second time around, so it feels syncopated on the downbeat...if you wanted to count out the melody the first time, it'd be a full measure of 8 eighth notes (4/4) and then one of 7 (7/8) but honestly, it's just a 4/4. listen to anton play it out and count along if you get lost.
you know this was my last observation, guess i need to write out to "see" it. anyway, very typical (original MHO) Mclaughiin 4/4 stuff.
for on lookers who want to play this (without really counting...i know BAD BAD BAD) use the chords being plkayed between the melody lines... that will set you up time wise...i oall too often take the machine-like "ear" approach.
i'm embarsaaed to say t6hat by just listening i still can't get the count (not sure it's just 4/4). here it is clip that if you loop it you can work on that part:
@ichisatori hehehe. embarassed? :) relax, man. i don't know if i'd do it diligently counting either. Rufus Reid said in college (i went to William Paterson) that the BEST way to get into learning a song was through your ear... THEN, read it... but EAR first... it all comes from there.
i'd argue that the machine-like approach is the OTHER one!
anyway, thnx for the sub and the friend request. accepted. :)
lol, too funny. while i'd like to think of "ear" as heart & soul of it all. that's the "machine" part! can't stop the old ear!
i can play it fine, but when you have to explain it... well, there ain't nothing to verbalize except. 1 2 3 4! HA! i still need to write it out for a drummer (yeah, i know what you're thinking) ;-).
Yeah! Oz and Eric doing what they do best; fusion jazz....outstanding. Oz is a stiff guy; keeps his head low; Eric moves around the stage more. They both sound great, I think....surpirsed Eric and the Bassist didn't crash into each other at some point
At 6:47, when Eric steps towards Oz, Eric spanks out the most fearsome lick from the Devil's bag of trick's I've heard in a long time. I think I would have crapped my pants if I was Oz. Damn you EJ! Slow down and let some of us catch up.
@nickknirk not gonna happen, EJ is just fiddle farting around in a freestyle jam here but it is EJ so it is indeed great work, but to expect something different would be just plain butt stupid....donchathink?
Why is ej making oz eat his solos, kinda like cutting heads

Rhythmic, possibly, but melodic? Maybe on this, but otherwise, I don't agree. EJ does tend to rush his playing, though.

Thanks for posting this, Zambur. Great music !
THIS is the best I have heard EJ's tone in a while ! Almost back to the violin tone of yesteryear. Eric, bring back THIS tone. Please, man!
Wow, I've met EJ a coupe of times, and thought he was pretty short. But he's at half a head taller than anyone else on stage here. lol

Sounds more like the tuber driver, not fuzzface. I also hear plenty of EP, especially on the higher notes.
