Sorry to ask this, but can somebody explain how a hand brake turn functions? Is it done only in FWD cars? I´ve tried to understand the logic of it but don´t think I get it, and would rather have any viewer with this knowledge explain it. It is a very interesting maneuver, thanks in advance.

as u enter a corner pull up the handbrake for about 3/4 of a second and the back end will swing out so u can get round tighter corners. if u are american dont try u cant drive 4 shit

The handbrake works the same in both FWD and RWD. All it does is lock the back wheels up. If you lock the back wheels while turning your car will slide. I hope I've answered your question.

Thanks for the reply. I´m not sure if I understand the mechanics of it, have seen mostly FWD cars do that maneuver, maybe because RWD cars would do that locking/power "combination" because of their very nature...If I got it all wrong sorry, but at least I understand that the goal is to lock the back wheels for them to slide.

I drive a holden commodore (rwd) and have also driven a few of my friends cars which are (FWD). the only difference i have noticed is. In the RWD cars i can get on the power alot earlier, as you said lock/power an it still goes around nicely. Where as in the FWD cars, if you jump on the power to early, there is alot of understeer and it dosen't go around properly. :)

Not really relevant to the 'Mericans out there but if anyone has a Citroen BX, do not attempt a handbrake turn; the handbrake acts on the front wheels, so nothing much would happen, except a skid.

Thinking about it....A BX would be amazing for J tuns.
