I used to like glossy and prefer them..but..I am now realising how better it is to use a matte one. Its so much better for the eyes if you are spending alot of time in front of the monitor :))
Meh, I've had them both and as long as you're in a room where you don't have light behind you, glossy is the best. It's true that the colors are much more vibrant and the blacks are much deeper. Glossy is terrible on laptops due to the reflections you get.
i would love to buy a iMac again but only if i have a Matte option , i bought a 21.5" but not for long , i live in a flat , i have roof windows direction south so i get full sunshine all day long , it was absolutely unusable from about 6am to 10pm in the rest of the time i could not switch on a light in the room , it was like sitting in front of a bathroom mirror , so i could not get any work done on the iMac, sold that thing again and got a old white polycarbonate iMac again
When I buy my iMac I will most certainly buy an anti glare cover. Even if it means sacrificing some picture quality. This is what I think of glossy displays: BUAGHHHHHHHHHHHHH (slobbers a little)
I prefer glossy, but matte seems much more prevalent on LCDs and notebooks. just can't beat the brilliance of a glossy screen. matte is very boring, and not nearly as impressive, but a little more practical than glossy.
I don't mind you spelling matt with an 'e' so now I am going to write matte as everyone else seems to be doing that.
I would be grateful if you Americans would pronounce 'route' as in 'root' and not as in 'rout'.
I noticed today in the computer shops I visited that there are next to no matte screens. Lenovo had one and there were a couple of Sonys. Glossy seems to be the order of the day. But I want to use my laptop outdoors!! Is the glossy backlight sufficient???
glossy might be right for a home computer that is set up in the right environment, but I must say my preference is MATTE. Especially for laps. When I use my beau's laptop I find myself teetering and head bobbing when a nasty reflection rears its ugly head....so much for sunshine and glossy laps, lol!
Glossy screen is good for use in dark rooms only. I would use it for gaming or working at night. Images (or scenes of the game, whatever) look better on glossy screens.
In any other case I would choose matte screen, especially for the laptop (you can't turn off the sun so the glossy would simply suck).
As it is said before, they both suck in one or other way, you just have to choose the one that would suck less in your use.
glossy ruins an otherwise good computer! any light makes looking at the contents of a web page like a game of where's waldo, you gotta constantly move your ead up and down to see at different angles
I like shiny things. I drive black cars & love the shine. But not on my laptop. I bought a MBP15, a/g screen. I compared both side by side. Both are beautiful, but the glossy was too glossy. I LUV my a/g screen. Yet I still wonder if I should have went glossy. Had I went glossy, I would have wondered if I should have gotten the a/g. We're never happy & are always looking for something better when in reality, either works. It is a matter of personal preference & you can't go wrong with either.
I've found even a microfibre cloth can start to scratch all this high gloss plastic we're seeing these days on stuff. I pick matte/black wherever I can.
yeah and my personal opinion about the screen is that glossy looks much better, but if the sun comes from behind you, you have a big problem. therefore the matte screen is better ^^
i have a macbook pro 13" wich is only available in a glossy option but i wold lick to by a matte film to go on it any suggestions i don't wont to spend more than £10
Matte all the way. Glossy looks pretty on the demo machine or in the store (as long as you don't see the fingerprints) but matte is much better in the long run when you set it up in home and realize you don't have to worry about the light glaring down on your screen.
I just got a glossy dell inspiron, it's like a fucking mirror, it hurts my brain. I'm gutted, I might actually send it back, what's the point in good contrast if you can't even SEE it.
Matte all the way. Glossy equals glare and reflectionand equates to large monitors > 30". I've always had this reflection problem with glossy screens depending on the environment its used in. Viewing angles is an issue too. When someone is demonstrating something to you on a glossy laptop screen, you literally have to be perpendicular to the screen to view the image without distortion.
Nice thank god I want it like a mirror I want it so reflective that no one on the planet can look at it. PS: You won't understand this because you are a fat dumb American. If you knew anything you will know why gloss is superior but I don't reply and explain anything to fucktards.
Apple says to clean their glossy screen like this dampen the cloth with water they gave you with your mac to clean the screen and just wipe it & dry it with the cloth or you can use a a similar cloth to clean it.
I prefer that Glossy screens are easier on my eyes, because less strain, but yes, the colors do seem fake. Matte has far better color quality, but it is hard on my eyes.

You have to be the biggest cunt to even think that Matte can ever be better than Glossy.
Do some fucking researching and see why its so much better to use Glossy than Matte and the fuzzy haze that matte causes on your eyes and damages your eyes.
I work on Photoshop a lot, and yes, in the dark because I don't like to waste a lot of electricity (and I hate the light) so I use a glossy screen, otherwise the colors look very dull and my work isn't as pronounced and as beautiful as it should be. That's why mattes suck. I hate that there are not more bundles that come with glossy screens. You hear me Dell!?!
glossy is great as long as there's no natural light. working near a window or outside sucks on a glossy screen. I hate glossy for that reason. If i was a mole man and only worked in my basement office glossy would be great.

i think the example he used was for his MBP so you are very likly to be outside and collect all sorts of things on your screen.
I for example have seen my friends glossy laptop screen after a night in a small club he had a layer of greasy sweat, smoke machine smoke and condensaton on it that refracted the screen so much reading text was almost impossible his main lappy was matte and was fine yes it needed a clean but you couldnt really tell it din when it was on
i prefer glossy i don't mind a few finger prints here or there but a like the better contrast and the colors on a glossy and i dont't use my laptop outside that much so glossy is for me. :)
please reply......i want to use a mbp for like everything, ya know, gaming, emailing, watching movies, etc. but i'm stuck for choice, as i want a mac which has great colour and quality, which one should i get? thanks.
Hey man, well I just got my glossy MBP today. I did have a matte screen, and I didnt really like it after reading about glossy. So, I called and had it returned. I had to pay 250 bucks for bringing in a used machine in place of a new one. But hey. GLOSSY! My first night with it tonight. So amazing. I am so happy! :DD The color is awesome, and I just think it looks more in depth.. If you are doing professional photo/video/graphics editing and stuff, you must get matte! I have more, I ran out of s
Space* So heres the next one. Glossy brings out the Blacks, and Whites amazingly. Along with the colors. the reason it is not good for the graphics stuff, however, is because it really exadurates the colors, and the whatever. Gamma. idk. And makes it look better than how it will be printed, or the final product. But if your gaming, Oh! And text? Looks more clear on my glossy. So gaming, movies, internet, and of the such, GLOSSY IS THE WAY TO GO! :]
So overall, glossy looks better in color, and clarity than the matte. Matte does not exadurate the image, and makes the colors better than "they actually are." But hey, idc about the print, or anything. I want my screen, and what im looking at to look its best! Another thing, with the glare? It is there, it is noticeable. But its not as bad as everyone puts it. And, I actually think the mirror affect is cool. :] Honestly, this was my opinion on the matte vs glossy debate. :] Get glossy.
Oh, and by the way. I returned it to an apple reseller. Not APPLE. Because I wouldnt think they would care if I was not happy with my matte screen. Maybe. But I doubt it. But after I picked it up today, ohhh!! It was awesome! I love it. But I gotta put it away. Its late, and I got work tomorrow. So peace out man, goodnight, and I hope I helped you out a bit. If you still want more info, go to google and type in glossy vs matte. Or something. And read threads, and forums. K. Bye!
Hell yeah man! Glad I could help! And I agree. The biggest con I would have to say about glossy? Is either the dust collection, or the glare. For the dust? You can just blow it off the screen. And the glare? Just a bit of change in the angle of your screen will fix it. Unless your outside, or in a place with tons of lights. But glossy is worth the color, clarity, and badassness! hahah Really! Okay man, take care, and I hope you enjoy your new computer! Peace bud.
haha Thats cool. No problem. Its kinda cool to like post comments and do that kinda stuff. And as for mac vs pc debate, his guy has? Phh! There is NO debate. Is . The Mac OS Leopard is near the brink of future tech. Will be future tech. I think. But anyways, yeah, no problem! :] Im never choosing matte ever again. I stay glossy until the next new thing pops up. ;] haha Peace. Enjoy the laptop! OHH!! And I wish I got a 17' MBP!! Not just cuz the pixels? BUT THE SPEAKERS!!!! AAAHHH!!!! hahah!
So if you have the money, and money is not much of a problem. Get a 17' Its worth the pixels, and the sound quality. The 17' Speakers are like x2 the size of the 15' speakers.. Aww. Oh well. Its still awesome stuff either way! Alright, thats all. Goodbye!
their is also the problem of having over-exadurated color reporductions in glossy, where if your printing/doing design, color reporduction/results may be off on a glossy as apposed to a matee. I think i am going to buy BOTH :P
I prefer glossy over matte any day. Most notebooks come with a glossy screen now but I've had a hard time finding a glossy monitor. Hopefully, this will change. I switched to matte for about a minute and thought I needed glasses because the image was so blurry compared to my glossy notebook.
"Matte" is US spelling "Matt" is UK spelling. "Matte" in the UK has a different meaning - "to combine two or more image elements into a single, final image".
Personally, I prefer glossy. I have both and agree that glossy shows up the marks very easily, but a lens cloth takes care of that in a few seconds. The colours are definitely brighter and the graphics are sharper on the glossy. But, outside the glossy screen is a pain for reflections.
i reflective screen might also be a problem if you use your laptop outside, but i think it would be grate for desktops, and thows new iMac actualy does look preaty sweet.
A glossy screen looks better at the store if you see the laptop screen off but a matte screen delivers a better picture if the laptop is on. So I prefer matte.
a friend showed me a 'very cool game' on his laptop at school. I was like wtf! all of the vending machine reflect in the screen. How can you see where you shoot? I prefer non reflective screen.
there are more glossy screens out now then matte, but glossy looks so much better to me, but dont lay a finger on it, they are finger print traps and it shows up,
Glossy has a lot of glare, and smuges easily. I personally, prefer matte, especialy if you have a good graphics card, where the "crispness" is already very close to glossy.
I thought that glossy sucks until I saw the glossy display on the MacBook Pro. In comparison to my old Samsung you can HARDLY se any reflections. Ever since I went with glossy again and didn't regret it.
Thanks for covering this. I'll need to decide by next month since I'll be doing video editing and photography on it and the higher contrast and saturation is making me want to go matte.
I have both glossy and Matte and I like both for different reasons. Like Chris said, the glossy screens get very ugly when they smudge. My Matte screen has a "Graphics" function, so the colors end up looking like the glossy, which is nice.
glossy sucks ass

Trouble with matte =
is simply a thin diffusion layer (micro version of what is on older strip lighting) This creates a jaggy effect over everthing onscreen.
B4 I knew of it I got a headache trying to bring all text into very sharp clear focus onscreen.
Is kinda like laying tracing paper over art B4 viewing it - Crazy LOL
The reflection is easy to deal with - understand it, then filter out reflection from what you choose to see - Easy ~_^

that's right, and what's the point you have to take your precious time adjusting your seating position, that's ridiculous.
icool001 2 years ago
i prefer glossy i don't mind a few finger prints here or there but a like the better contrast and the colors on a glossy and i dont't use my laptop outside that much so glossy is for me. :)
ns552 3 years ago 3
I'm totally for matte. I can't stand fingerprints on screens.
arleena753 3 years ago
Well dont touch the screen then you wont have finger prints on it
techking00107 3 years ago
Glossy Rules, I never notice my reflection and once it's turned on you don't see the fingerprints etc.. And who would put it in the sun anyway?

please reply......i want to use a mbp for like everything, ya know, gaming, emailing, watching movies, etc. but i'm stuck for choice, as i want a mac which has great colour and quality, which one should i get? thanks.
hnvnokfsjgjovb 3 years ago
Hey man, well I just got my glossy MBP today. I did have a matte screen, and I didnt really like it after reading about glossy. So, I called and had it returned. I had to pay 250 bucks for bringing in a used machine in place of a new one. But hey. GLOSSY! My first night with it tonight. So amazing. I am so happy! :DD The color is awesome, and I just think it looks more in depth.. If you are doing professional photo/video/graphics editing and stuff, you must get matte! I have more, I ran out of s
Shivell777 3 years ago
Space* So heres the next one. Glossy brings out the Blacks, and Whites amazingly. Along with the colors. the reason it is not good for the graphics stuff, however, is because it really exadurates the colors, and the whatever. Gamma. idk. And makes it look better than how it will be printed, or the final product. But if your gaming, Oh! And text? Looks more clear on my glossy. So gaming, movies, internet, and of the such, GLOSSY IS THE WAY TO GO! :]
Shivell777 3 years ago
So overall, glossy looks better in color, and clarity than the matte. Matte does not exadurate the image, and makes the colors better than "they actually are." But hey, idc about the print, or anything. I want my screen, and what im looking at to look its best! Another thing, with the glare? It is there, it is noticeable. But its not as bad as everyone puts it. And, I actually think the mirror affect is cool. :] Honestly, this was my opinion on the matte vs glossy debate. :] Get glossy.
Shivell777 3 years ago
Oh, and by the way. I returned it to an apple reseller. Not APPLE. Because I wouldnt think they would care if I was not happy with my matte screen. Maybe. But I doubt it. But after I picked it up today, ohhh!! It was awesome! I love it. But I gotta put it away. Its late, and I got work tomorrow. So peace out man, goodnight, and I hope I helped you out a bit. If you still want more info, go to google and type in glossy vs matte. Or something. And read threads, and forums. K. Bye!
Shivell777 3 years ago
thanks for your comment, i appreciate the help! i think i'm gonna go glossy cos there's more pros than cons
hnvnokfsjgjovb 3 years ago
Hell yeah man! Glad I could help! And I agree. The biggest con I would have to say about glossy? Is either the dust collection, or the glare. For the dust? You can just blow it off the screen. And the glare? Just a bit of change in the angle of your screen will fix it. Unless your outside, or in a place with tons of lights. But glossy is worth the color, clarity, and badassness! hahah Really! Okay man, take care, and I hope you enjoy your new computer! Peace bud.

good stuff man. thanks for the input "glossy all the way" i've decided from now on.
hnvnokfsjgjovb 3 years ago
haha Thats cool. AAAHHH!!!! hahah!
Shivell777 3 years ago
So if you have the money, and money is not much of a problem. Get a 17' Its worth the pixels, and the sound quality. The 17' Speakers are like x2 the size of the 15' speakers.. Aww. Oh well. Its still awesome stuff either way! Alright, thats all. Goodbye!

johnstangg 4 years ago
Matte for laptops because glossy screens produce static electricity, causing it to be a dust magnet. but i prefer glossy on desktops
BarricadeSlade 4 years ago 4
their is also the problem of having over-exadurated color reporductions in glossy, where if your printing/doing design, color reporduction/results may be off on a glossy as apposed to a matee. I think i am going to buy BOTH :P
DTSMedia 4 years ago
I prefer glossy over matte any day. Most notebooks come with a glossy screen now but I've had a hard time finding a glossy monitor. Hopefully, this will change. I switched to matte for about a minute and thought I needed glasses because the image was so blurry compared to my glossy notebook.

the psp has the best screen ive seen, it has a very nice blue look to it.i have blue eyes, does that make me biosed?

Matte all the way - glad I bought my iMac 6 months before this change.
Oh and I tried the new iMac at the Apple 5th Avenue (Manhattan) store today, I am not thrilled with the gloss nor the flat keyboard.

i can see idiots all over the chat room saying "MAC IS BETTER! MAC ALL THE WAY!" and i even saw "What is matte?"
marblewonder 4 years ago
A glossy screen looks better at the store if you see the laptop screen off but a matte screen delivers a better picture if the laptop is on. So I prefer matte.

I lik matte the most, but glossy is taht horrible... The reason i dont like glossy as much is because glossy reflects sunlight so much...

a friend showed me a 'very cool game' on his laptop at school. I was like wtf! all of the vending machine reflect in the screen. How can you see where you shoot? I prefer non reflective screen.

Glossy has a lot of glare, and smuges easily. I personally, prefer matte, especialy if you have a good graphics card, where the "crispness" is already very close to glossy.

I love my glossy MacBook Pro, but someone once told me that matte screens display small details with greater accuracy. Truth? Or no?
sunzzip102 4 years ago
I thought that glossy sucks until I saw the glossy display on the MacBook Pro. In comparison to my old Samsung you can HARDLY se any reflections. Ever since I went with glossy again and didn't regret it.

I find i can't see any thing on glossy screens when i have lights on.
javalu882005 4 years ago
Thanks for covering this. I'll need to decide by next month since I'll be doing video editing and photography on it and the higher contrast and saturation is making me want to go matte.
DMXell 4 years ago
I have both glossy and Matte and I like both for different reasons. Like Chris said, the glossy screens get very ugly when they smudge. My Matte screen has a "Graphics" function, so the colors end up looking like the glossy, which is nice.
