What makes The song so good is the gruffness in dave's voice. The flaws and inperfections in the vocals gives the song its character. Prince is a pop singer. He just can't cover that kind of perfect imperfection.

I find it highly laughable that people on here argue quality on how many instruments each artist plays. The product you end up with is what you should critique. And personally I love both versions. I also like Foo's effort at Darlin Nikki. But it was missing some of the dynamic scale of emotions. Foo did it 100% rock hard all the way, while Prince put the intense part where it was needed. Just my opinion on the darling nikki song.
