@gobo760 Just because they say they are a Republic, they are not. They are really an Oligarchy. We live in a Republic (or should be): playlist?list=PL0FDDBDB4473530ED
@Christ724 No, it really isn't. It's simply tyranny of the majority. The majority should not be able to impose their will on the minority through the threat of physical violence. We need to respect individual liberties.
@DoctorCapitalist Oh right, but the tyranny of the minority is better? Please, representative democracy aka republics cannot compare the to the amount of individual freedom can attain from pure libertarian democracy.
@Christ724 I don't support tyranny of the minority. I support individual liberties, where no individual can do things against other individuals against their consent.
@Christ724 The reason people support republics is usually because they believe that the state's only job should be to protect individual liberties, however this is paradoxical as in order for a state to be defined as a state, it must have a "legitimate" monopoly over a geographical on being able to do things to individuals or their property against their consent. That's what a state is. An invasive defender is quite a silly concept.
Yet you defend it. I'd understand if you were a supporter of consensus style, decentralized, direct democracy but you sit here defending a system of privilege and injustice.
@Christ724 I don't. I'd prefer to either have an extremely limited republic government (where the only things that can be voted on are methods of defending individuals from force, fraud etc) or pretty much just get rid of the state all together.
Sounds crazy but you know, the state has done pretty much all the worst things in mankind lol
The state is simply a violently enforced monopoly on defence and justice. It never used to be like this.
@DoctorCapitalist A limited republican government by definition supports privilege (those in power) over those without. If the state has committed so much wrong, why even support and defend Republics? That doesn't make sense, just call yourself an anti-statist, period. Also, I don't know what fairy tale world you thought the past was but it was never like that.
@Christ724 It used to be that when people had disputes, both parties would select a mutually agreed upon judge (who had a reputation for being honest, fair and objective) and both would agree to abide by the judge's ruling after much investigation of course.
@Christ724 The state does very little in actually defending people from force or fraud. You could use the argument that the threat of prison deters criminals but I really don't see police officers running into a house and fighting with a psycho with a gun in your house.
Remember the Columbine shootings? There were 800 swat officers waiting outside the school with guns, none of them went in there to deal with a few teenagers.
@Christ724 Individual liberties, as in, liberty from having things done to their bodies or property against their consent. Liberty from the initiation of violence if you will.
Talk to some idiots on the street who don't get, or care about world issues. There's a 1% chance he'll/she'll give you an informed opinion.

America is a republic, damn it.
I don't know where people got the idea it was a democracy.
newvultraz 2 months ago
@newvultraz It's a representative republic in which the officials are elected via a democratic process.
This is what people refer to when they say democracy does not work.

Democracy? No...
Constitutional republicanism with democratic representation?
