I think UTnow doesn't make video's like the old days is because he simply lost the passion to do so. Can't you hear how tired and lacking passion he sounds in the simple making of this video? Like he said in his previous video, he's lacking time and is busy running whatever company he's running. Looks like he's no longer living with his folks, and is having to actually make it on his own doing hard work.
hey there, how's my favorite tsip doin?? you should definately make more vids, man. If people like perez hilton can gain notoriety, you most def can make a living out of blogging/political commentary. Love, Bob
I want to see a Presidential debate, where if someone such as Obama, Hillary, McCaine when asked about a subject and they flip their standing, another participant in said debate outright calls them a "goddamn liar"
And points out where they're lying, like my mother does when she watches debates.
This election I'm voting Ron Paul, mainly because he seems to be the least full of shit.
Wow, I didn't realize the whole passion thing. Good job. I also agree with you on the killing thing, but it will make a come back. It always does. Circle of Life.
You didn't use a comma in the twenty-third sentence when you should have.
Politians with passion or direct or useless, politians are merely tools for the majority...thats how democracy works, the president reps what his/her ppl want in a government, if that president would rep anything else or have a vision that stirs away from the ppl then they wouldn't b a good politian...just like Bush, most Americans don't want a war but he is set on doing it, politians who have a vision(or rather passion) r not what the ppl rlly want no matter what they say
I think Obama has passion, but he doesn't show it in a "passionate" way. Because showing too much emotion will get you classified as "crazy". Or a "loon" as O'Reilly likes to say. Hell, just look at Dean's demise. One passionate scream into a microphone and your done.
This is why I intend to vote for either Hillary or Obama (I'll probably flip a coin). Either of those people in office will help the American people to become more open-minded.
The decisions made by our presidents in this day and age are generally the same decision that ANYONE would make in the same situation with the same information. Being president isn't the same as it was in the days of our founding fathers. They aren't being asked to help build the country from the ground up. That is why I vote based on what a candidate represents rather than how they look or how much money they can raise.
To this day, I still don't think it matters who is president. Think about it, How much does your life change significantly from one president to the next? Taxes are going to go up no matter WHO is in office. Systems that work will keep working, and systems that don't work will fail. We're not voting for a leader, we're voting for a symbol, an icon, a representative.
Dude, great belief system of passion. The most passionate people are the best people unless if they are Islamic Extremists. Then they just blow shit up.
the problem is they have a passion for the politics. politics is their job - it's ultimately what they get paid for doing. not makin the place better for anyone. just good enough for the time being.. and for the most part, that's at the best of times.
So your just not going to respond to me dude dont let this get ugly we portugese know no bounds to our anger just be a man not an amatican and give me and answer or ill come to you can get it
i don't believe that they do that. Politicians try to give out this...driving attitude that comes out as stupidity because they try way too hard to seem perfect. (Sometimes they're too douchey to even be able to do that). If anyone had or has passion, it would be pretty damn difficult to hide true passion completely, if, at all.
Perhaps the passion we can't cue in on is the politicians passion for survival and/or money... It makes you do silly things and in the case of politicians we may only see what is publicized... We all have something that drives us.... even if it looks stupid from the observers point of view.
Passion is meaningless (even dangerous) without a direction, Scott, dear.
Hitler, Mao, Chavez, Russian Revolutionaries, Robert E. Lee, A-Jad, That little Korean Guy, etc etc, all had the exact type of "passion" you're talking about.
Don't disconnect the emotion from the actual "product." Emoting alone produces nothing.
Hard to picture Hitler and Mao as directionless, or just "emoting, producing nothing"... those guys emoted and changed the world.
But you're right: you REALLY wouldn't want to vote for a passionate guy that you disagreed with over goals. Perfect example: Al Gore. Def passionate. IMO, def wrong. Would never vote for him.
yet these people were extremely effective leaders. I didnt say we needed to vote in passionate people without regard to their beliefs. We simply need people who are passionate about the right things. Buuut... You effectively proved my point by being overly nitpicky and missing the point. :) jk
Okay, you can call it nit picky, I'll call it " simply being clear. " Obfuscation is nasty business. What was your point, again? The fact that it was political was lost on me. I had no idea that's what you were talking about, only giving examples.
I'm voting for the guy that's blowing up Mecca. So much passion! xD
Well, pick the lesser of two evils I suppose... I'd rather have a president that was passionate about his position than a flub that looked more like a president outside of his/her views.
You want passion what about mike Gravel, he's the post passionate candidate out there!
Anyway, I disagree with you, because people who are passionate are usually too polar in their ideas and therefore do not get much supporters therefore people who have the most supporters are the least passionate, only because they don't polarize as much.
the country has pretty much always been in the state of organized chaos that you describe, ionno about the world, but if you count the good presidents, the types of the people you describe, there really are not that many compared to the amount of people, so its normal to only get one of those people once ever 10 or so elections
An excellent talk-starter, Scott (and wb, btw). One thought: passion tends to be focused. It's hard for a sincere candidate to be passionate about all the range of things a President must handle. And, many of the candidates are VERY passionate about specific issues: Paul about the war, Tancredo about border reform, etc. That said, I agree our frontrunners (Clinton, Obama, Guliani and Romney) seem like career pols driven exclusively by their quest for power.
Longtime fan, however I felt this video was missing something, and that is a solution. What's going to end up happening is that the 50-60% of people who actually vote in your country are going to be more disheartened about how dispassionate their leaders are, and end up staying home on election night. It's true we need more passionate leaders, but we also need to have passionate voters that will vote for these leaders. Maybe you should run as a vote in campaign, you seem pretty passionate :)
The opposite of passion is not logic, it's apathy. Scott's not criticizing politicians for being logical, he's saying they're poll-driven, without closely-held values and thus missing the drive to accomplish anything particularly important.
Great video. I'm glad to see your finally back making content again, for us ungrateful bastards. Haha, anyway I'm looking forward to the videos to come.
They get wrapped up in what they're saying -- they make mistakes.... That's my dad. Passionate about preaching that sometimes he doesn't realize what he said until later, and often has to dig himself out of the hole he dug, but people really like to listen to him because he care about what he's saying. Cool video.
The trick is to sort through the bullshit and try to find the infinitesimal part they actually believe in. If you're lucky, that part will be different for each candidate, and you will be able to choose. The problem is when after all the crap there's only more crap.
George W. Bush made mistakes. He pounded his fist. He said the wrong things at the wrong time. He went to war because he knew he was right and to hell with the consequences. If that is passion, I would prefer someone a little less passionate and a little more thoughtful. That's just my take on it.
Dubbaya is hardly passionate. He can't even fake it. He's just doing as he's told and doing his best to convince middle america it's the right thing to do. Thomas Paine was passionate. GWBush is just a stubborn frat-boy.
Brilliant video. I agree with everything you've said in the video, and although i am not from the united states, i've listened to a lot of the politicians, and i was just thinking to myself that i don't know who i would go with, because they all look like pretentious liars. That being said however... it's good seeing you post another you tube vid. Keep it up!
I'm surprise about your comment about Ron Paul doesn't look like a president. I think he does!
Anyway It was nice to see you back and to hear you like what ron paul is saying.. somewhat?. I'll enjoy watching you bash all of the candidates for the next few weeks!
dude wait, u forgot to be passionate about the cuts. 1 in the beginning? thats not the utnow i know!
i watched the youtube republican debates. i have to agree w/ ya about mr. paul. i was surprised to hear what he was saying actually make sense. now if only somebody who has a chance can do that
I agree that we are to blame for our candidates, but want to add something.
We are living in a society that wants to be "Right" more so than "true". A society that wants to be on the winning side, moreso than the "true" side.
Passion comes with truth, instead of two parties battling to see who wins. I personally can't follow politics too much, I burn myself out getting so mad.
Ron Paul is surprised by his own success. Maybe he will get more passionate as he gains in the polls. I'm sure the passion is in there because it takes great courage to do what he is doing. He could get killed for it. Maybe he is a little scared.
Hey Scott. I think probably looking presidential (fashionable?) is what got us into this mess. We tend to be, dare I say, a little fatalistic when it comes to choosing our leaders. We think: is this candidate going to be the person that I'll see on my TV (or computer) screen every day? We try to look into the future and select which one seems to be the one that we think i's fate that we select. We're a fatalistic populace.
I'm so glad you're back, Scott. You're one of the only fresh and passionate voices on YT. I hope I might see you in Texan politics in the future... I'd vote for you. ;)
You know you could've tagged this Ron Paul, right?
Who cares if Ron Paul looks and sounds like a president? America has to start looking at the issues and stop voting based on shallow things such as how a person looks. A president is supposed to act, not look or sound. it's not some beauty pageant.
He was trying to say we need strength in government and used the visual cue of a "strong leader". Someone who is strong and honest and this is mirrored by how they appear. NOT just saying they need to be pretty.
And yeah our politicians do suck. I like Duncan Hunter but he doesn't look the part. Looks like another election where we have to vote for the least evil.
Please do Obama first in your series of Candidates.
I disagree with you that he is not passionate... For me, actions speak louder than words, so when Barack started out as a community organizer as a Harvard Law Grad, he was showing he was passionate about helping people. He obviously was foregoing the massive paycheck that a Harvard law grad usually commands.
I think maybe you should take a closer look at the effect media has had on you if you are capable of disqualifying a candidate (any candidate) based on how they look and sound... less fashion means LESS focus on the looks and sound... think about it. Good Vid.
He was trying to say we need strength in government and used the visual cue of a "strong leader". Someone who is strong and honest and this is mirrored by how they appear. NOT just saying they need to be pretty"
Understood, but he also said there were several candidates he WOULDN't vote for because they didn't look Presidential to him. What people looked for in a candidate 50 years ago doesn't even remotely fit in with what we've got now... the smartest most fiscally sound guy in the world couldn't get elected now a days if he was crippled, or fat.
I never said "the media and media alone" those are your words. I simply think you should think about the world we live in TODAY and ask yourself if an "F.D.R." would have a snowball's chance in hell of being elected, or even NOMINATED for the office of the presidency...
He wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in hell of being nominated back then, either, if the average person knew he was paralyzed. They didn't: the media worked with him and they kept it pretty much a secret.
Like the way they didn't report Kennedy's screwing around... wow, can you imagine how different things would seem now if our media actively tried to make the President look GOOD?
utnow for president! ha only joshing- but the points you make are inline with reality. Jesus, ghandi, alexander the great, abraham lincoln... all so full of passion.
ps- i like the dirty clothes on the floor, it makes your videos have a degree of real like never before- haha. oh and, what is the song at the end of your video?
Please provide evidence for a time when US leaders were driven by "passion" as opposed to the day-to-day operations of politics. The point that with advancing technology comes increased public scrutiny is valid...But this common misconception that politics today is somehow anything less than more democratic and ideological shows a lack of historical understanding.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
so basically what you are saying is that it is more important to be passionate about something than to be right? I would prefer them to be right. terrorists are passionate.
don't take what utnow is saying that way. terrorists have a blinded type of passion. yes, passion is an extreme emotion as love or hate. But the type of passion it takes to be in politics is an understanding passion. it is tenacity, it is anger at the way things are and knowing what it's going to take to make a positive change + not being afraid to make that change. you see what I mean?
terrorists don't have understanding... they have tenacity and anger- but not understanding
part 1: you should be passionate about being right - knowing what you believe, and why. nobody said that you should abandon logic and simply embrace passion. if you have no passion, you are going to be swayed by other passionate people - who may or may not be right.
part 2: our politicians are lacking passion and giving pieces of themselves away to passionate interest groups who may not have everyone's interests in mind. if you're right, but not firm in your beliefs, then you'll likely flip flop, and you won't be very demanding about making things actually CHANGE and IMPROVE.
Not just politics. But todays world.
No i like your Passionateness.
Its awesome. It sucks that I just found you and your no longer on YouTube.

You used the wrong tense of a verb, or something to that degree.

Ron Paul is surprised by his own success. Maybe he will get more passionate as he gains in the polls. I'm sure the passion is in there because it takes great courage to do what he is doing. He could get killed for it. Maybe he is a little scared.

Scott, I agree with you on all points. Thanks for the video and I'm looking forward to your next installment.

We're a fatalistic populace.
mistaspot1 4 years ago
That's dangerous because we get tricked into thinking we can't have anyone we want to have no matter what they look like.

I think you missed the point
He was trying to say we need strength in government and used the visual cue of a "strong leader". Someone who is strong and honest and this is mirrored by how they appear. NOT just saying they need to be pretty.

I knew it. this video is dedicated to Margaret Thatcher.
But you have to choose between a strong fashion president or a weak passioned president.

But I want to hear what you think.
mattsgibson 4 years ago
I think maybe you should take a closer look at the effect media has had on you if you are capable of disqualifying a candidate (any candidate) based on how they look and sound... less fashion means LESS focus on the looks and sound... think about it. Good Vid.

LessThanJames75 4 years ago
the media and media alone is responsible for how humans judge other humans based on physical appearance?
so before television, internet, newspapers, or radio, nobody anywhere ever did that constantly for thousands and thousands of years??
haha seriously?
maybe u should take a look at how the media has defined ur view of the world?
ericpid 4 years ago
I never said "the media and media alone" those are your words. I simply think you should think about the world we live in TODAY and ask yourself if an "F.D.R." would have a snowball's chance in hell of being elected, or even NOMINATED for the office of the presidency...
LessThanJames75 4 years ago
He wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in hell of being nominated back then, either, if the average person knew he was paralyzed. They didn't: the media worked with him and they kept it pretty much a secret.
Like the way they didn't report Kennedy's screwing around... wow, can you imagine how different things would seem now if our media actively tried to make the President look GOOD?
mrkiii 4 years ago
utnow for president! ha only joshing- but the points you make are inline with reality.

The point that with advancing technology comes increased public scrutiny is valid...But this common misconception that politics today is somehow anything less than more democratic and ideological shows a lack of historical understanding.

so basically what you are saying is that it is more important to be passionate about something than to be right? I would prefer them to be right. terrorists are passionate.
dallasloser 4 years ago
don't take what utnow is saying that way. terrorists have a blinded type of passion. yes, passion is an extreme emotion as love or hate. But the type of passion it takes to be in politics is an understanding passion. it is tenacity, it is anger at the way things are and knowing what it's going to take to make a positive change + not being afraid to make that change. you see what I mean?
terrorists don't have understanding... they have tenacity and anger- but not understanding
kevinclayton 4 years ago
part 1: you should be passionate about being right - knowing what you believe, and why. nobody said that you should abandon logic and simply embrace passion. if you have no passion, you are going to be swayed by other passionate people - who may or may not be right.
texichan 4 years ago
part 2: our politicians are lacking passion and giving pieces of themselves away to passionate interest groups who may not have everyone's interests in mind. if you're right, but not firm in your beliefs, then you'll likely flip flop, and you won't be very demanding about making things actually CHANGE and IMPROVE.
