was intrested in baking my own bread for a healthier option but looking at how much sugar she put in to that bowl i think ill stick to the white slice
This is the best soda bread video on the web. It's a lot like my ma's (Mayo) though she sometimes added a little oats and honey or treacle (I guess in place of sugar).
That was wonderful. I have my mothers yellow pyrex bowl just like the one in the video. I use it often but don't know what I would do if it ever broke.
@paidskn1488 Yes, both my parents can speak some Gaelic, but due to local dialects in Ireland, and the fact that my parents grew up 80 miles apart, they could never get very far speaking it in our house because they would end up arguing with each other about the correct way to say it!
Awesome video..I love to watch other food traditions and recipes...this one looks like a keeper. Your mother is beautiful, I love the accent. I fresh grind my wheat before baking so this recipe is going to make one heck of a delicious weekend breakfast! Thank you ~
Wow man that is just superb,,, you aint gonna get any better than this, thats for sure,,, loved the techniques with regards to not handling the dough and rolling it in the bowl. ive made here before at home in Cork city but it wasnt right something was missing. just that delicate touch and patience i guess and the forks for a wire rack lol i love it.
I attempted to make this bread before watching your video, but now I know the brown bread-making secrets of a true Irish Mom. Thanks so much and God bless for this video!!!
My husband is from kilkenny ireland and he was always saying how hemissed his gran's brown bread. I followed your video and i have to say my husband loves this bread "almost like gran's" you get 2 thumbs up from me, thank you so much.
I made it! It turned out better than I expected! Thanks for the video! Every St. Patrick's Day, I look for a recipe for traditional brown bread. THIS is IT. Thanks, again!
My great aunt, Marion Carmody, from Mt. Hope Wisconsin, would come visit her only nephew and his 6 kids (me#5) in Texas every winter during the 60's and 70's.... She would make irish brown bread using similar methods, but with bran and rolled oats. The house would smell like a bakery, and she would stay 2 weeks, long enough to make 3 batches of multiple loaves. She passed 22 years ago and I still havent quite got the recipe down. I end up with a giant scone! Thanks for sharing...great memories.
Thank you for sharing your family recipe! I have just returned from a trip to Ireland and was searching for a recipe for the delicious soda bread. I will definitely attempt your recipe this week.
@1too3fore Have you ever read the ingriedients in bread made nowadays??? there is more shite in it to make it easy to mass produce, brown soda bread is one hell of a healthy bread let me tell you that, compared to what bread you probly eat on any normal day
@APERTUREKING Clearly, you don't care about your health much! Salt leads to high blood pressure, sugar leads to unstable blood glucose levels and eventually type 2 diabetes. Good luck with that.
@1too3fore Everything you said is true of course, but only if you are eating this everyday of the week. I dont need luck with anything i know how much is too much, everything in moderation is fine in my opinion, stop with the scare mongering
Great video. My grandmother's recipe(she was from Cork) used all white flour plus 1 tablespoon of caraway seeds and 1 cup of raisins in the dry ingredients. Her technique was the same as your mother showed for how to prepare.

Far too much sugar for my tastes. 1 teaspoon is more like it, not 8.

And more sodium in the baking soda. Good luck with the blood pressure in that family.
