I had drived Eaton Fuller 13 speed in Finish truck named Sisu, engine was Rolls-Royce Eagle 320. Second was also Sisu with with NTE Cummins with original 400 hp, but tighten to lot over 500 hp.320 Rolls engine truck was driven with 48 tons weight and NTE Cummins with 60 tons and over, sometimes to 75 tons.
Looks familiar to me, the stick itself was shorter due to c.o.e. 'Twas 1980 when I first time met Fuller 13 speed RR, 14 liter Cummins too but the very first power-plant I met coupled with E F was Rolls Royce, in-line 6 - its name sounds good but it was a crappy thing anyway, Sisu timber truck, only 320hp or so, reduction gears at hubs (6x2), a 3 axle truck trailer and total weight ca. 68t (metric) in practice, the legal gross weight at the time was only 48t. At uphills I felt we were glued..8O
My uncle was a truck driver for a long time and started driving back in the 50's he told me about a trans he used to drive called an eaton "over and under". Is this similar to that with the splitter on top and the range selector below??
The first truck I started driving was a 1973 GMC 9500, had a 238 detroit, with a 13 speed. We still have that truck, haul grain with it in the fall, a very good truck in it's day.
I drive a 10 speed eaton fuller tranny at work, and I have always used the clutch. Mainly out of habbit.. The last truck I drive had a regular 7 speed in it. Was a 7.3 international single axle crane truck. Nice truck, underpowerd as all hell.. The 10 speed is nice to shift, and drive.
Well the big cams were really good, the 1,2, and 3 were. The big cam 4 was a real joke, there cooling systems were nothing but shit. Thats probally why his big cam 4 broke down alot.
hey i just uploaded a new clip. its shifting a 3 position splitter 13 speed. its the same model tranny as this truck has. a 12513. i posted the video response if you were interested in seeing it.
i rode with my dad to haul scrap in a 81 peterbilt 359. Had same big cam 2 cummins in it, it also had the 12513. But it had the 3 position splitter knob (Lo, Dir, and OD) it had plenty of howl to it. I heard that the three splitter positions were pretty good. Uses 2 less fingers. :]
love that fuller whine. Its my favorite noise on a 13 speed. My dad used to have a 1982 Mack superliner that had a 13 speed in it. When you put in overdrive, the tranny starts to really howl!! I mean, it was LOUD! But then after awhile, it was swapped to a newer model roadranger, then it was quieter. Thats why i i want a 13 speed in my own truck. If its not a loud 13 thats howls alot, i aint driving it. ;P
I cant help it! When i drive a 13 speed i have to occassionally use all 13 speeds. brings back memories of first trucks i ever rode in a crackerbox gmc and a cab over pete hauling grain.!13 speeds i what makes driving a semi cool. if not a 13 then i'd just soon have an automatic1which reminds me i gotta go,i gotta go to iowa. lol
Cant say I have ever drivin a semi,is it true that they are kinda like a ten speed bike?I mean having a two speed rearend gear. You shift 1-5 then change rear gear, go back to 1st, which is now sixth gear and work up through the gears again?
depends on the tranny a 9 0r 10 speed yes you typaly would go 1-5 then 5-10 but it all depends on your practice and methods and your load. when empy i start at 4th then shift to 5th then preload jump to 7,9,11, and finally 13.
@sokodad Yup, Some guys "pre-select" the 13 speeds into the next range then drive for a bit before doing the actual shift. When you pre-select, you are putting pressure on the splitter forks tip pads and creating un-due wear. Think of it this way (although not the same but the same type of failure) as riding the clutch, when you leave your foot on the clutch, you're spinning the throw-out bearing for no reason thus pre-mature bearing failure can occur. Sounds like you're doing it correct.
The 18 and 13-speed transmissions are basically 9 speeds that can be split on the high side(13), or on the high and low sides(18 speed).....so, disregard the gear splitting in the video, and that's how you shift a 9-speed(with the exception of the U-shift pattern). Hope this helps....
9's, 10's, 13, 15 and 18 speeds....then you have the old 2-stick and 3-stick setups(not something you see anymore unless it's old or someone has retro-fitted it to the truck). I've ran 9(straight, over and double-over), 10(hate a 10-speed with a passion....wouldn't give you a plug nickel for a Super 10), 13 and 18(these I prefer the most.....downside is they're heavy).
me too. My dads 1984 western star log truck had a 13 speed. it made that whine, just a little quieter. My dads 82 superliner with a fuller 13, it had the whine too. it was loud! My dad is driving a 1999 Kenworth T800 for hauling chips with, it only has a 10 speed. So it doesnt do the whine.
A fine peice of shifting on old school fuller. I had both, and even had one that was a get this a 13 dpd underdrive,it splet low instead of going high on the shift. It was in a 318 screaming Binder coe. Thanks, good job.
i have an 04 freightliner with a "lightning 10-speed" or super 10.i absolutely love it.most drivers hate the super-10,because they get confused with the shifting pattern. If you can shift it,you will love it.i love it especially with the 515bhp Detroit 14.0 litre motor.
I've never seen a shifter with that extra button below.I've driven a 7 speed roadranger with that same button thats on the bottom alone and that was the only range selector. Then I road shotgun in a 70's style 900 with that same top knob you have and I belive that chrome knob had 3 button positions for range selection. Is the top button 2 positions to split the gears the bottom button to split the high and low range? I just want to make sure I'am seeing this right.
He shifting them gears like he's playing a guitar!! very good vid!!

would it be good if i put a 10-speed fuller on a 12v71 or 8v71 detroit? :p

i heard that you can convert a BC 1 to a BC IV by changing the turbo (obviously), the cooling system, the fuel pump, and etc.

the big cam 3 was the best one to get. 4's had a shitty cooling system on them.

burkeysdiesel 3 years ago
I'm talking about not "preselecting" the splitter here. Everyone loves to argue that!
burkeysdiesel 3 years ago 2
@chuckrl Well you can't pre-select the old 13 speeds, or else you'll end up in neutral.
Hotrodx199 1 year ago
@chuckrl what do you mean by preselecting? Splitting before you shift? I usually split as I'm shifting if that makes sense.
sokodad 6 months ago
